    22 minutes in Tim mentions Viking but is unsure of the meaning. My office was located on the Mezzanine Floor of the Imperial Hotel from 1978-1985, next door to the legendary Ichiro Inumaru, the general manager and a few yards away from Finnair’s office. Mr. Inumaru recounted how in the late 50s his father Inumaru senior (also a General Manager of the hotel) was invited to Finland to commemorate the inaugural Finnair Tokyo-Helsinki service. Whilst in Scandinavia, he was fascinated to encounter Smorgasbord (originally a Swedish style buffet) for the first time. Reaching out to his Imperial Hotel executive chef Nobuyuki Murakami who happened to be in London on business, Inumaru and Murakami immediately recognised the enormous appeal it would have back at home, especially amongst the emerging middle class housewives, whose husbands were too busy at work to spend time together. Bus loads on organised tours would descend on the Imperial every lunchtime; the buses would arrive at the rear banquets entrance and use special elevators to the 17th floor so as not to congest the remarkable hotel lobby. The only problem was that Japanese found the pronunciation of Smorgasbord too difficult, Buffet was passé and so they decided on Viking (pronounced Baikingu in Japanese) to evoke the concept of Scandinavian cuisine and all you can eat (Vikings are hardly known for their polite table manners).

      Thank you so much for reaching out and providing this wonderful gem of history 😃. I wish I would have known that and now it makes perfect sense. All I heard from the servers and hosts there was that the term Viking means to eat. 🤦🏻‍♂️😉. I'll just pin this comment as it is very insightful. Thank you so much again 😃

    I was so close to visiting Japan at one point. I'm a Motion Capture performer and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity. That would've been a real dream come true visit South East Asia. Cool video!

One thing I want to mention is that I won't blame you to fall asleep when watching a movie when you don't speak that language. I would have done the same thing if I watch a movie with foreign language. By the way, the escargoes look delicious and other food really amazing. • @robbiedaniels2164
      @robbiedaniels2164 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Japan is actually not that expensive. You can get an incredible sushi meal for around $40 that would cost $150 in NYC. Great ramen costs $8 that would cost $25 in NYC. Great beef is around $40 a pound that would be $160 a pound. Same goes for super high quality chicken and pork.

      @minlui2752 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robbiedaniels2164 Another TH-camr who has the same surname as Tim Lee is Anita Lee also known by her Chinese name Wanhua Lee. She just did a sushi restaurant video in Japan last week. She kept emphasizing that some of the sushi was like two or three Canadian dollars!!!!! She and Tim both reside in Vancouver, Canada so it is Canadian dollars she compared the prices of the sushi to. If you are saying $40 USD, then it is average and not cheap!!!! Since when is sushi $150 in the USA??!!!! Of course, if it is a few people it can be $150, but not for one person!!!!! And ramen is not $25 in NYC!!!!! Ramen and other noodles are more like $15, $16 and can go up higher if it is seafood with ramen. You are making the NYC prices higher than the average restaurants are!!!!!

    • @robbiedaniels2164
      @robbiedaniels2164 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minlui2752 what i am saying is that the quality of a $40 sushi meal in Japan is equivalent to a $150 meal in NY. Of course you can have a $40 sushi meal in NY as well - but the quality will be like a $5 meal in Japan. A bowl of ramen in NY is $16 for a very basic ramen, usually with no egg. But then you need to add tax and tip. In Japan for 1200 yen (equivalent of $8-9 U.S.) you get a big bowl with most of the toppings. That price in Japan includes tax and tip. I lived in Japan for 2 years and know the food situation quite well.

A long time ago I spent 7 days vacation in Japan. It was not a great experience cuz the guided tour jumped from one city to the next not giving the tourists a chance to see more of Tokyo before rushing off to another city. I got the worse hotel room in Mt. Fuji with no view, but the other tourists all got a nice room with a view of Mt. Fuji. There is a Chinese proverb “Run Horse To See Flowers” It means glancing at the flowers while riding on horseback. This expression is used to describe your short stay at a place, which did not afford you a good understanding of its people and culture. It is used to describe a fleeting glance or cursory observation in passing. This honestly and truly accurately described my 7 days guided tour in Japan a long time ago!!!! Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to have another vacation in Japan. Your daughter is so young, and she will have opportunities to visit Japan again in the future if she likes Japan. One of my family members’ daughter just graduated from middle school. Indeed, May and June are the graduation time and party time for students 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎉🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊🎊
      I hope you daughter have a awesome vacation in Japan✈️⛩

      @Joannealford1113 The reason for the 7 days guided tour to Japan in the old days was because Hong Kong maximum vacation time was 7 days so going from Hong Kong to any other countries you can not get a guided tour for longer than 7 days. Of course, you can fly to Japan, and get a guided tour in Japan. Tim Lee is so fortunate to be on such a long vacation as he was in Vietnam and now in Japan ✈️🤩

    Wow Tim, for that much money, no seafood! Your USA and Vietnam videos were so much better. Thanks for showing this, I will not be checking this place out if I’m ever in Japan. Have fun!

      Agreed, dull and very Tv dinnerish from the 1960's, crap actually.

      The food there is exquisite. If seafood is all you want, go to a seafood buffet.

    Great video and I enjoyed every second of it......however, I noticed that when you're ordering some dishes you were addressing the staff by there family names only. That is not OK. Whenever you addressed any Japanese by her/his family name please add 'San' at the end of the family name....thru this act, it will give you a better impression of who and what you are as an individual.

    Looks good Tim! Although you didn’t eat enough to warrant the cost ($151 Cad). Surprised to see no sushi, crab or lobster.

      This was quite elegant but a bit pricey. I think the premium is on the historic nature of the hotel

    Classic Tokyo experience ... jet lagged and trying to kill time before check-in. Watching a movie is dangerous as you discovered. An all-you-can-eat buffet is a great alternative; however, you have to take a long zombie-like walk afterwards in order to stay awake. Don't be tempted by the chairs in the hotel lobby. Try to avoid drinking too much coffee or else you will just lay in bed trying to get sleep. All seasoned visitors to Japan have recommendations / stories about how to survive the first day's jet-lag and 3 pm hotel check-in's. View it as a hazing.

      The time zone was a tough one to get over... It was interesting because a guy later on told me that I should have just booked a karaoke bar and just rested there 😂

    This would probably be good value for your money. The food looks first class. I assume the wine would be an additional cost.

      It is. I was there, and they had a fine selection of wines, but even the cheapest one on offer was very expensive.

      This was an interesting buffet, because it was Japan’s first buffet. I think they took on an international style, but very fun and enjoyable nonetheless.

    My wife and I are long-time followers but I have say this buffet is not worth $115. Even in expensive southern cal, I can get the same buffet for $40. This buffet gives people a feeling that they don't take pride in what they do. From the presentation to quantity and quality of the food, it is a run-off-the-mill strip mall buffet.

    Great review!! Looks like the buffet has mainly “American” food. They didn’t have any Asian food at all?? Curry and Rice don’t count. No sushi or sashimi? Thank you.

    I was curious if this buffet have a time limit (ie: 2 hour limit in your other buffet video at prince hotel) ? Since this one seems to be more upscale, it looks like a good place to take people when you need more of a quiet conversation environment. And is the wine (or alcohol) also included in the price?

    • @TimLeeLetsGo
      @TimLeeLetsGo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was quite elegant and upscale and the wine was not included in the price of the buffet. I believe they do have a 2-hour limit as well but I don't believe that was enforced...
