      Super dumb reasoning....most people are not that much into hardware and will look for fixes.
      How many people that get their phone damaged or cracked go into youtube channels to see how it gets repaired, only the enthusiast.
      This channel is a niche for GPU enthusiast.
      The dude has fantastic skills and I watch his videos but dont expect the channel to blow anytime soon. Its fine as is

      @@rx10 Did you just defend the self-inflicted ignorance of normies and called someone out for wishing that a more sophisticated channel had more viewers? You think this channel shows "fantastic skills", but it "is fine as it is" that he has not more subs, cause people should rather be throw their shit away and have no basic understanding of the things they and consume?

      Not everyone lives in the USA and pay in USD. For us in South Africa, a 4090 is six months salary. So, we either get the card, dont eat. Or better idea is stay on an old card and have food. Basic salary is ZAR6000 -ZAR8000 here. the 4090 is ZAR32000 -40000

      @@peternoone7902 Don't feel bad, highend cards are definitely way overpriced but that is just the way things are. If you have a Toyota Corolla budget (and needs), you don't go shopping for a Hellcat. Those cards costs about the same take home amount of an average adult in the US. Even with a salary of more than twice the national average, I'd not even think about getting one of those cards. Heck, the custom built system I bought for $1800 in Nov 2021 came with a 3070Ti when the video card alone was selling for $1400-$1500. You have to be smart when shopping, especially when you lack the funds.

    The AIBs cutting costs because nVidia charges them arm and a leg for the cores, same time dictating the MSRP and competing with them making founders cards. This is shady AF! Even my fav PNY can't last in that environment 😢😢

      I mean they do produce the most important product on that measly board. If I was in NVidia's shoes I'd do the same.
      but the real reason AIBs cheap out is because they want to make X profit per card and don't care what the consequences are to the consumer

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@iamdmc Spilling electrically conductive liquid on your card is likely to damage something no matter how good the quality is. Some cards have more robust designs which will reduce the amount of damage they are likely to take, or just make diagnosing the problem easier.
      Not having soldered joints on the heat sink isn't necessarily a big deal. The cooler for a 4090 is going to be so heavy either way that you should never mount it horizontally (in a vertically mounted motherboard) without some kind of additional support, and you should never transport the card in the slot without additional support either. Even if it's the lightest 4090 on the market, you probably still need to always give it additional support, unless it's mounted on a horizontal motherboard (but even then you wouldn't want to transport it without removing the card first, or adding additional support).
      I didn't watch the entire video, so unless there's some additional design flaw that he brought up deeper into the video, the quality doesn't seem to be an issue here. Spilling electrically conductive liquid on your card is likely to damage something no matter how good the quality is.
      We should be picky about quality, especially with an ultra-high-end product like this. That being said, quality for videocards has generally gone up over the years, but sometimes quality does still go down too with some brands.
      Personally, I have become very picky. I don't care about extreme high-end over-engineered coolers, I just tend to go for coolers which are above the quality of the more basic models, and I like to see independent reviews on the exact model before buying. Sapphire and EVGA both offered a lot of good quality boards without charging a big premium for it, but sadly EVGA obviously isn't making cards anymore, and Sapphire obviously only makes AMD cards.
      Most brands make some good products, some over-priced products, and some products with design problems or quality shortcomings. Manufacturing flaws are also always a possibility, even if the design is perfect.

      Unfortunately the cost of reparing stuffs went so high that most of the times it is more logical to put a bit more money and buy a new device instead of reparing the current ones. no doubt repairing things is difficult but at the end the cost should be so that people think it is worth it to pay for repair instead of getting a new one

  • @PaulHigginbothamSr

    Jeesh captain, the board would not release even with low melt solder. We might need some way to pressurize the molten solder. Like that Philippines guy on shop fix channel. I watched him give back a graphics card to a customer and the memory chip he had used solder wick to pick up all the unleaded solder from the board but he left it on the chip. I think he never had a stencel or solder balls. The card then worked fine but might crack at the first opportunity.

    Having a vapor chamber instead of a copper plate is a huge advantage. I heard a rumor that Nvidia was thinking of making the 4090 even more high powered but then they changed their minds after the AIB's already had their coolers in the pipeline and that's why they're so overbuilt. Maybe PNY skipped soldering to save some money because they knew this cooler would work fine.

      but I would expect a repair like this to cost $300US or more just for his time, + $50 for parts
      Replacing RAM will cost even more, like $20/chip, and if your core is dead (on a 4090) that's the thing that "totals" the card because a replacement is basically impossible to find brand new commercially, with used cores off of burned out cards being the only option (and such a card on ebay is about 1/2 the price of a new card)

    I have a question, Have you repair any PNY graphics crads?, And if so how good is the assembly and quality?, I want to buy a new GC and the fact the PNY are up to 100 ddl cheeper is very alluring, but it also makes me suspicious of the quality, I know price is not all but still

    • @cryspin7
      @cryspin7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn't look for general opinions. Every company makes cheap models that are usually very bad and high end models that are usually pretty good. Some are better than others but it changes from generation to generation when companies are revamping their cooler designs. PNY XLR8 on the 4000 series has one of the best coolers. Asus Dual on 4000 series when switched to quiet bios is also pretty quiet and is probably the best you can get at msrp.

    I have exact the same 4090 from PNY and I love it.
    the card is way better than the 500€ more expensive 4090 Strix from ASUS I had.
    I know the PNY is "only 450W" compared to the Strix.
    But the ASUS had horrible coil whine and also noisy fans compared to the PNY.

      Lol ik the feeling I have the 4090 gaming x trio tho the vapor chamber would be nice but truthfully not really needed lol I barely hit 70c on full game loads and that's with it vertically mounted I know this owner 😂 gonna turn over a new pcb after this endeavor and treat their card better xd.

    Good video, I feel a bit sorry for the end user though. Send in a repair and it takes over a month to get it resolved and sent back. Assuming there was a bit of a backlog and assuming opening/shipping time, was it about 1.5 months? That's a long time to go without a video card.
    Having a few of each part makes the most sense. Grabbing just a few of each would save the customer a lot of headache if something happens in the future.

    • @MaddJakd

      In a perfect world, sure.
      Keeping a rolling constant stock of various parts would be amazing, but lets be honest.... we all saw how every big mega corp couldn't do that not too long ago (some are still fighting with supply lines)
      Not under the impression he's running an operation that big lol.

    Tony, I noticed how much solder you use to tin the pads on the PCB and the MOSFET. Do you think that so much solder could possibly lead to shorts under the chip especially after pressing on top of it ? When I do similar soldering I'm always very cautious and I use wick to remove some of it.

    • @Apollo-Computers
      @Apollo-Computers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think yes a bit too much solder and it jumped two or more pads when he pressed down.

    KrisFix seems to have a soldering iron with a vacuum or something - I never see him using Solder wick
    Considering how many GPUs you fix it might be a worthwhile investment? Also you'd have a lot less lead exposure since there is no premix step

    • @szaszm_
      @szaszm_ ปีที่แล้ว

      KrisFix is using unleaded solder IIRC, so lead exposure shouldn't be a concern there. I'm not a repairman, but wouldn't want to go anywhere near leaded solder fumes.

    • @iamdmc
      @iamdmc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@szaszm_ yes but the OP NWfix does use leaded solder. That's why I'm saying the solder vac might be a better idea for him to avoid solder wicks and leaded solder fumes

    • @2xKTfc
      @2xKTfc ปีที่แล้ว

      Warranty is for stuff the OEM did wrong. You're free to take a sledgehammer (or water hose) to your card, but the OEM will not take any blame or charge for that - and rightfully so, this kind of damage is not their problem. The OEM might offer to repair it for you for a cost, outside of warranty, but that's something else. And I suspect that no manufacturer would touch this card in their shop, the damage was more excessive than the typical one or two broken components they deal with.
