    The way some people treat their cards... You'd think they'd know you can't put a leash on them and take them for a walk in the park. Some people though are special.

      Not everyone lives in the USA and pay in USD. For us in South Africa, a 4090 is six months salary. So, we either get the card, dont eat. Or better idea is stay on an old card and have food. Basic salary is ZAR6000 -ZAR8000 here. the 4090 is ZAR32000 -40000

      @@peternoone7902 Don't feel bad, highend cards are definitely way overpriced but that is just the way things are. If you have a Toyota Corolla budget (and needs), you don't go shopping for a Hellcat. Those cards costs about the same take home amount of an average adult in the US. Even with a salary of more than twice the national average, I'd not even think about getting one of those cards. Heck, the custom built system I bought for $1800 in Nov 2021 came with a 3070Ti when the video card alone was selling for $1400-$1500. You have to be smart when shopping, especially when you lack the funds.

    The AIBs cutting costs because nVidia charges them arm and a leg for the cores, same time dictating the MSRP and competing with them making founders cards. This is shady AF! Even my fav PNY can't last in that environment 😢😢

      I mean they do produce the most important product on that measly board. If I was in NVidia's shoes I'd do the same.
      but the real reason AIBs cheap out is because they want to make X profit per card and don't care what the consequences are to the consumer

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@iamdmc Spilling electrically conductive liquid on your card is likely to damage something no matter how good the quality is. Some cards have more robust designs which will reduce the amount of damage they are likely to take, or just make diagnosing the problem easier.
      Not having soldered joints on the heat sink isn't necessarily a big deal. The cooler for a 4090 is going to be so heavy either way that you should never mount it horizontally (in a vertically mounted motherboard) without some kind of additional support, and you should never transport the card in the slot without additional support either. Even if it's the lightest 4090 on the market, you probably still need to always give it additional support, unless it's mounted on a horizontal motherboard (but even then you wouldn't want to transport it without removing the card first, or adding additional support).
      I didn't watch the entire video, so unless there's some additional design flaw that he brought up deeper into the video, the quality doesn't seem to be an issue here. Spilling electrically conductive liquid on your card is likely to damage something no matter how good the quality is.
      We should be picky about quality, especially with an ultra-high-end product like this. That being said, quality for videocards has generally gone up over the years, but sometimes quality does still go down too with some brands.
      Personally, I have become very picky. I don't care about extreme high-end over-engineered coolers, I just tend to go for coolers which are above the quality of the more basic models, and I like to see independent reviews on the exact model before buying. Sapphire and EVGA both offered a lot of good quality boards without charging a big premium for it, but sadly EVGA obviously isn't making cards anymore, and Sapphire obviously only makes AMD cards.
      Most brands make some good products, some over-priced products, and some products with design problems or quality shortcomings. Manufacturing flaws are also always a possibility, even if the design is perfect.

      I mean it's a 4090 so probably not
      but I would expect a repair like this to cost $300US or more just for his time, + $50 for parts
      Replacing RAM will cost even more, like $20/chip, and if your core is dead (on a 4090) that's the thing that "totals" the card because a replacement is basically impossible to find brand new commercially, with used cores off of burned out cards being the only option (and such a card on ebay is about 1/2 the price of a new card)

    Having a vapor chamber instead of a copper plate is a huge advantage. I heard a rumor that Nvidia was thinking of making the 4090 even more high powered but then they changed their minds after the AIB's already had their coolers in the pipeline and that's why they're so overbuilt. Maybe PNY skipped soldering to save some money because they knew this cooler would work fine.

I watched him give back a graphics card to a customer and the memory chip he had used solder wick to pick up all the unleaded solder from the board but he left it on the chip. I think he never had a stencel or solder balls. The card then worked fine but might crack at the first opportunity.

    Serious Question Why do all A.I.B's not cover the rear of the die?
    The Nvidia Founder edition card has that place covered up.

    Is 180c (preheat) board temperature safe? The capacitors specs says they are rated at max 105 celcius. I am always feered to preheat the board above 120c, cause they are has some liquid, and dont want to blow then up :D.I should test cap capacitance before preheat, and after preheat on different temps.

    Question, if that mat you are using, is anti static, Isn't it also conductive? And won't that influence the cards you are injecting voltage into/measuring? Or, is the resistance of the mat too high for test voltages, but conductive for High voltage/static? hm...

    • @northwestrepair
      @northwestrepair  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      its not anti static.
      Anti static mad is not conductive. It has a wire which you strap to your self which is grounded. Thats all that is.
      Just strap your self to ground with a coiled spring like wire so you are not restricted in motion.

    I have exact the same 4090 from PNY and I love it.
    the card is way better than the 500€ more expensive 4090 Strix from ASUS I had.
    I know the PNY is "only 450W" compared to the Strix.
    But the ASUS had horrible coil whine and also noisy fans compared to the PNY.

      Lol ik the feeling I have the 4090 gaming x trio tho the vapor chamber would be nice but truthfully not really needed lol I barely hit 70c on full game loads and that's with it vertically mounted I know this owner 😂 gonna turn over a new pcb after this endeavor and treat their card better xd.
