  • We got called to move a shed that was going to be re-purposed for a chicken coop.
I’ve never moved any structure this large with my rollback tow truck before, so I was a little apprehensive to take the job.
Can we do it without it falling apart?

My father and some friends moved a small garage shortly after WW2. They made some brackets that replaced the bumpers on a pickup. With the pickup in the small garage they jacked up the garage. They made a wooden framework attaching the garage to the pickup. Next they drove the pickup to the new location. Of course it had to be guided because the driver could only see what was visible through the removed garage door.

The Internet remembers, Matt, YOU SAID "Rollbacks don't leave the pavement" What gives?
People of the comment section, we've been lied to, we've been had, we've been took, we've been bamboosled! This man is a fruad!
I'm joking of course, these things happen, there's an exception to every rule. Thanks for sharing this unusual job with us.

There's pavement (asphalt roads) and there's pavement (hard packed flat roads and driveways).
Some city folk think it's not a road unless it has asphalt and street lights.

Reminds me of when we moved from our old house. It had snowed 18 inches two weeks before we were supposed to get moved out, and another 6 inches the week prior. Our travel trailer sunk in the snow/mud as I was going back and forth trying to back it out of the yard. I put two by twelve 8 foot boards down to back onto, and planted those a foot down with the axles were half under mud. The snow/mud was pretty bad. Called multiple tow companies in the area, to help us get it unstuck and out of our yard. They wanted $300 to $400 to come out and pull it out. I thought that was crazy. Ended up having my dad drive up (from 5 hours away), he strapped onto the back bumper of the trailer to pull it towards the gate while I backed it with my truck. Took us about 20 minutes with both 4x4 trucks working on it.

50 years ago or so my Dad moved an 18x24 garage a few miles to our house with a Sinclair Oil F350 Ford winch truck. Dug under the side walls front and rear, slid a stick of 4" pipe underneath. Laid the gin poles down and backed in. Picked the rear of the garage up with the winch, rigged a chain and walking boomer across the front bumper and picked up the front.
The Ford's twin I beam front suspension was pigeon toed pretty good, but down the highway he went with it. Needless to say it wasn't the most stable thing on the road that day, it would lean and the 4" pipes would drag, but he made it without incident.

I moved a 8 or 9ft wide by 18ft long duck coop on my regular car hauler... a little less winching, a lot more jacking and cribbing... then backing through the 2ft of snow under the coop, cribbing the trailer and lowering the coop. Only had a widow maker(jack-all/farm jack) go flying once... somebody else was in control-ish of it.. Sheds that fit between the wheel fenders are soooo much easier.

We moved a shed for a friend one time. Picked up one side with the front end loader on a tractor. Got the edge over some 2x6s across the bed of a Dakota. Then the other side up enough to get on. Then pushed it up to the cab with the tractor. It was WAY bigger than the bed so it hung off like 3 to 4 foot on each side. Then we took up a gravel road on a hill. I about died when we got to the top and got out and they were RIGHT BEHIND US IN A CAR! If that thing had slipped and fell they would have been in real trouble.

Should've tried to get that Willys pickup out of the deal. That would be a cool recovery truck!

as long as all the sides are supported it should work , the thing i would had done differently was putting the cable of the winch through a pulley on a higher point on the headache rack
the way it was sitting it put all the weight of the overhang of the barn in the rear on the front beam under the door once it started to hinge down , if it wasnt as strong as it was (older building) it might had cracked , the higher point in the front would had helped lifting the rear a bit more
the guy might've been able to do it himself if he jacked the building up a lot further took 2 strong enough traileraxles bolted those under the structure in the middle and the back , then pull it behind a tractor using its 3 point hitch or an off road forklift holding the front up and pulling from it (no steering just pulling it around the corner like a semi / 5th wheel trailer )
