Did you not leave your apartment in Vancouver? Its one of the most walkable cities in the world. Its full of parks, downtown is Stanley park with the longest natural seawall trail in the world. Go less than an hour outside of Vancouver, its total wilderness, beautiful.

Plus one for Mr. Cavan. Things are really different outside the big cities. Unfortunately for us, municipal and provincial governments in Canada are largely captured by real estate developers. So we find ourselves in the absurd position of being the second largest country in the world and the highest housing costs per square metre for the tiniest condos allowed. I once viewed a condo in downtown Ottawa. It was so tiny that I asked the realtor how one would get furniture through the door. She told me that they make special furniture to fit into modern condos. Yep...
An "Immersion" comprises a copper tank filled with water & a heater. The "Immersion" is an electric heating element that sits inside the copper tank. When you want hot water you need to turn the immersion ON - then leave ON until the tank is hot. You want a bath--or shower--you turn it ON. When you do not need hot water you leave it OFF. Mostly these days they are timer controlled... Most old house have immersion heaters for the hot water. Latterly they were replaced by oil or gas central heating boilers which heated the radiators and also heated the copper hot water tanks. Nowadays the boilers heat the radiators for the house and are "Instantaneous hot water heaters" so you do not need a copper tank nor immersion. Turn on the hot water tap or shower and the boiler instantaneously heats the water. Technology arrives in Ireland...and UK by the way
Good video man! Most people don't realize this, but drivers in Canada CAN turn left at a light in one circumstance - you can turn left from a ONE-WAY street as long as you're turning onto another ONE-WAY street! It's in the driver's handbook and it's the ONLY exception to the rule! IT'S A FACT. 👍👍

@@BrandonHilikus It's been 14 months now and I don't regret it at all. Do I miss my life in Vancouver? Absolutely, sometimes painfully so. More than that I think I miss the PERSON I was when I didn't live in Ireland, more confident, less critical and not caring so much what others thought of me. It's hard to hold onto that person here. But I'm also really enjoying building my new life at home. People in Vancouver seem...stuck, for want of a better word. It doesn't matter if they're 30, 40 or 50, there's a youthful mindset which is absolutely great for a period of time but starts to get rather old (excuse the pun) after a while. There's a lot of fun things to distract yourself with, but is anyone really building anything of permanence? While Vancouver really felt like it was my home after a year or so, nothing beats your actual home. Maybe it can be best explained with this small anecdote; on my first week back I was going for a walk in my small hometown and as I passed a stranger coming the opposite direction he looked me straight in the eye and said a simple 'Hello'. I was so taken back by this that I don't think I even answered the fella. This is something that, for all it's surface-level politeness, NEVER happens in a city like Vancouver. Here it happens every few meters and I appreciate it every single time. I'd forgotten that this is what human beings should actually do when confronted with one another. I hope it never changes.
As a Canadian that's been all over this country I have to say Vancouver is one of my least favourite Canadian cities and it always surprises people. Victoria on Vancouver island on the other hand is gorgeous and one of my top Canadian cities to visit. I live in Toronto and feel we have more green space and a nice beach front compared to Vancity, plus a lot more to do. Vancouver is very expensive, has crazy levels of crime and addiction and always seems dirty, dull and dangerous. My favourite cities are Victoria, Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, St. John's NL and Saskatoon as a prairie city. Like most Canadian places, all are best to visit in summer or fall.
Vancouver is one of the most congested and expensive cities in Canada, I'm Canadian and would not live in Vancouver, cost of housing alone is ridiculous, if you can find a place to live.
Vancouver is unusual, being squeezed between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean with limited space to build on. Add that to it being Canada's main port on the Pacific plus being popular with all kinds of foreigners in addition to Canadians and it becomes over crowded. If you went a few hundred miles inland past the mountains to the prairies you would find yourself downright lonely.
Great video!! I think you’ll find that the feeling of space (or lack of space:) is unique to Vancouver. Vancouver has the highest density of people in Canada and as you pointed out, home ownership is pretty much impossible unless you are wealthy.... So we all live in our shoe box apartments (but the mountains and oceans are beautiful).

Love Montreal. My brother lived there for almost 10 years. Great people and lots of culture. Serious weather as well. I must say I prefer summer to winter in Quebec 🥶
You are mainly speaking about Vancouver. Toronto is completely different, there are lots of green spaces. I live close to downtown and there are 3 parks within 1 block. One of the parks is approximately 4km long.
Donn you lived in Vancouver. Of course there isn't space. If you moved out of the city there is all kinds of space. That's one thing that Canada has lots of.

Wrong title. Should be life in Ireland compared to Vancouver. There is a lot more to Canada than just Vancouver. If you want old Buildings go to Halifax N.S. Or Quebec and Ontario. Space...Vancouver is crowded...the rest of Canada is not like Vancouver.
Ireland is dwarfed by Canada, and the idea that there's more space there speaks to your myopic experience in Vancouver. I suggest you take the 10 days to drive ocean to ocean, then report back on the green space we've got.
The card thing isint really true anymore. I mean the video is very new but in Dublin you can use your card everywhere. Theres even a few places that don't take cash. Gravediggers pub is the only pub that I know that doesn't take card .

First thing that comes to mind, outside of the obvious, is get your car insurance history documents ready. If you plan to drive here it'll be significantly reduce your quote. Research PPS number before you arrive. It's our version of social insurance. Takes some time to get. Try and secure a mailing address as soon as possible. Banks etc will want it. Also have a look into health insurance options. Most clinics here do pay and claim so there isn't a big culture for direct billing to govt/insurance companies. That's all that comes to mind right now 🤔 hope it helps 😃

I have considered getting my Irish Passport through Ancestry. My great-grandparents on one side are from there. I have always liked Irish people, culture etc. and from what I understand its a pretty good nation in Europe in terms of COL, politicis, work etc. Canada is crazy right now and I do not see it getting any better. Well you’ve obviously never lived in the United States because it’s a slow process for everything. And being able to get a credit card whenever you want when you look at how many people are in debt and Canada and the US it’s probably a good thing
Night life in Ireland is much better in my opinion. However, this has it's nuances as the level of service in Canada is better. But over all atmosphere and warmth of people in Ireland is more welcoming. On the other hand, activities in Canada are WAAAY better. Hiking, camping, sports clubs, snowboarding, the outdoors and street festivals are things that Canada does very well. It really comes down to what you're into. Hope this helps

yeah he probably went to the down town area and stayed in the area. Once you get out of the city it can be spacious, I live on the island my self, it's so nice here.

You need to go to more places than Vancouver... there is definitely A LOT of space and parks.... Try Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Charlottetown just to say a few... They are all different and all have different vibes... basing your info on one of the MOST expensive cities in the entire country. I was born in Canada. My father was born in Canada. My grandfather was born in Canada. My grandfather's great grandfather came from Ireland sometime in the 1820's. I grew up about 15 km. from the original homestead. I now live in Toronto, a lovely and interesting city. In 2019, my wife took me to Dublin for me 60th birthday and I had a wonderful time. I was very delightfully surprised that all of the stereotypes of Ireland that I had were no longer true (if they ever were). It never rained for any of the four days we were there. We told the hotel staff that we had brought our Canadian weather with us. (If only they really knew.) I drank a Saigon beer in a Vietnamese restaurant in Dublin Ireland because ten years before that I drank a Guinness in an Irish pub in Saigon Vietnam.
Drinking culture in Canada is not as big. Drinking culture in Ireland is awesome. More bars less questions. And people talk more in Ireland. Canada most people keep to themselves. I would not recommend Canada but everybody has a different opinion.

We're in the south not because of climate, but because of transportation (St. Lawrence/Great Lakes, etc.), good agricultural land, and trade (with US).

I'm not sure about tuition fees for people coming from India, but I'd add that getting around Irish cities will significantly reduce your commute time. Canada is very vast and if you don't get a place on campus, you might spend a lot of time on transit. Keep me updated 👍
Theres probably no good reason for the canadian passport. Theyre just ticking boxes. I didn't realise it was easier in North American. I know that Spain and France have terrible bureaucracy as well

Hiya. I'm an Irish citizen, but I've lived in Canada most of my life. What you've said is true for the most part, but the most significant difference I've noticed between Canada and virtually anywhere is that when you're Irish in Ireland, you're Irish. Or English in England. Or French in France or whatever it is wherever you are. Not so in Canada. I'm old enough to be yer Da and in the last 30 to 40 years Canada has lost the soul of who it used to be. It used to be like America, a melting pot where folk came from all over to be Canadian. They kept their cultural identity, but were Canadian. Now it's ultra-multi cultural and to be honest it's anyone's guess who Canadians are. Maybe I'll retire in Ireland. I'll have to make sure I've got all the documents needed for my wife and myself to get our PPS number. 8-) Go raibh maith agat.
This is a huge point. So many of the people moving to Canada today are not in the slightest bit interested in actually 'being Canadian'. Unfortunately most Canadians can't seem to grasp what a detrimental effect that is having on the countries sense of identity and solidarity as a people. Further they actually go out of their way to enable this lack of assimilation under a misguided attempt to be inclusive. Vancouver especially felt like a city of people living peacefully side-by-side but not actually living as one collective society. This led to so much underlying tension and I think is a huge reason why some describe the city as 'soulless' and 'lonely'.

Vancouver is a highly-populated bustling metropolis. You think that’s what our entire country is like??? What an absurd comparison. If you were to check out a suburban area or smaller city/town you’d be literally surrounded by nature trails, parks, public gardens, fields and green spaces. Vancouver is squashed between the mountains & the coast, space is at a premium, compared to other parts of Canada.

Am living in Belgium still deciding if l should move to Canada or Ireland my plan is to work as a nurse
Wrong title. Should be life in Ireland compared to Vancouver. There is a lot more to Canada than just Vancouver. If you want old Buildings go to Halifax N.S. Or Quebec and Ontario.
Space...Vancouver is crowded...the rest of Canada is not like Vancouver.
Ireland is dwarfed by Canada, and the idea that there's more space there speaks to your myopic experience in Vancouver. I suggest you take the 10 days to drive ocean to ocean, then report back on the green space we've got.

The card thing isint really true anymore. I mean the video is very new but in Dublin you can use your card everywhere. Theres even a few places that don't take cash.
Gravediggers pub is the only pub that I know that doesn't take card .

Jay-walking is not illegal in Ireland as is the same in the UK. One can be fined in north America for jay-walking.

First thing that comes to mind, outside of the obvious, is get your car insurance history documents ready. If you plan to drive here it'll be significantly reduce your quote. Research PPS number before you arrive. It's our version of social insurance. Takes some time to get. Try and secure a mailing address as soon as possible. Banks etc will want it. Also have a look into health insurance options. Most clinics here do pay and claim so there isn't a big culture for direct billing to govt/insurance companies. That's all that comes to mind right now 🤔 hope it helps 😃

You missed coming to visit Newfoundland, especially the east coast of the province which is often compared to Ireland. Where else in NA will you find the Irish Loop?
Just a heads up. If you are in dublin there are lots of places that dont take cash . Card is much more important now

My ex bf was a Dane and we met when he lived here and when I moved to Denmark, I got told off by his mother for sending to back to Denmark as a jaywalker. He said he would never drive a car in Ireland because you never know when people could pop out 😂
I have considered getting my Irish Passport through Ancestry. My great-grandparents on one side are from there. I have always liked Irish people, culture etc. and from what I understand its a pretty good nation in Europe in terms of COL, politicis, work etc.
Canada is crazy right now and I do not see it getting any better. I want a better future for my children and I have a really hard time seeing that here in Canada.

Well you’ve obviously never lived in the United States because it’s a slow process for everything. And being able to get a credit card whenever you want when you look at how many people are in debt and Canada and the US it’s probably a good thing
What about the nightlife and activities? Would you say Ireland is a less inviting and "warm" country compared to Canada?
Night life in Ireland is much better in my opinion. However, this has it's nuances as the level of service in Canada is better. But over all atmosphere and warmth of people in Ireland is more welcoming. On the other hand, activities in Canada are WAAAY better. Hiking, camping, sports clubs, snowboarding, the outdoors and street festivals are things that Canada does very well. It really comes down to what you're into. Hope this helps

Even Vancouver has Stanley park which is massive and most City’s have many , many Parks.That said , everything we have lots of is very expensive , Land, building supplies, power even gas as compared to other large exporters of oil! Also no one knows why things like cell phone plans and wifi are so much( probably because we have little in the way of , Monopoly and Combine Laws!

You need to go to more places than Vancouver... there is definitely A LOT of space and parks.... Try Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Charlottetown just to say a few... They are all different and all have different vibes... basing your info on one of the MOST expensive cities in the entire country. Loved your video, but some of your observations do not hold true in the rest of Canada. Thanks for your take on what you observed but...

You have to be very proper in both countries they're both english countries of proper etiquesie to and you have to respect the tradition and culture of both the Irish/english and the english of canada without you'll be lost...in life...its a lifelesson...
?! I'm almost 50, and I do not carry any cash in my wallet. Haven't had to for about 20 years. I don't take cabs, but I'm sure nowadays they do take debit cards.

Anyway, parts of Canada were founded in the early 1600s. In my city (Quebec City) there are buildings from that era, and it's not the only place. Also, BC is DEFINITELY not representative of Canada as a whole, it has its own very unique subculture and population makeup and its own triple-pricing everything lunacy....

I know that americans always say that they were surprised by how they were treated when they were crossing into Canada.The items that they will say is a dangerous weapon varies from a flashlights to a pen and seem ridiculous.
I was born in Canada. My father was born in Canada. My grandfather was born in Canada. My grandfather's great grandfather came from Ireland sometime in the 1820's.
I grew up about 15 km. from the original homestead. I now live in Toronto, a lovely and interesting city.
In 2019, my wife took me to Dublin for me 60th birthday and I had a wonderful time. I was very delightfully surprised that all of the stereotypes of Ireland that I had were no longer true (if they ever were).
It never rained for any of the four days we were there. We told the hotel staff that we had brought our Canadian weather with us. (If only they really knew.)
I drank a Saigon beer in a Vietnamese restaurant in Dublin Ireland because ten years before that I drank a Guinness in an Irish pub in Saigon Vietnam.

Drinking culture in Canada is not as big. Drinking culture in Ireland is awesome. More bars less questions. And people talk more in Ireland. Canada most people keep to themselves. I would not recommend Canada but everybody has a different opinion.

Most Canadians live along the Canada/American border because its the most “southern” which is to say its a far more enjoyable climate.
Would love to visit Ireland. It’s been a desire for many years for me. The architecture & culture looks amazing. Canada is young but I know we have very old amazing limestone buildings in Ontario as well as most of eastern Canada that are beautiful as well. Never been to Vancouver, BC. Don’t know how it compares. Except it is viewed as the most expensive part of Canada
We're in the south not because of climate, but because of transportation (St. Lawrence/Great Lakes, etc.), good agricultural land, and trade (with US).
Idk if I can appreciate the Dublin architecture. I’d rather they get rid of it all and build modern skyscrapers so that house prices and urban sprawl can go down.

@@vaisakhps8642 really cool. Both countries have reputable schools and narrowing down which courses appeal the most would be great. I'm not sure about tuition fees for people coming from India, but I'd add that getting around Irish cities will significantly reduce your commute time. Canada is very vast and if you don't get a place on campus, you might spend a lot of time on transit. Keep me updated 👍

Hiya. I'm an Irish citizen, but I've lived in Canada most of my life. What you've said is true for the most part, but the most significant difference I've noticed between Canada and virtually anywhere is that when you're Irish in Ireland, you're Irish. Or English in England. Or French in France or whatever it is wherever you are. Not so in Canada. I'm old enough to be yer Da and in the last 30 to 40 years Canada has lost the soul of who it used to be. It used to be like America, a melting pot where folk came from all over to be Canadian. They kept their cultural identity, but were Canadian. Now it's ultra-multi cultural and to be honest it's anyone's guess who Canadians are. Maybe I'll retire in Ireland. I'll have to make sure I've got all the documents needed for my wife and myself to get our PPS number. 8-) Go raibh maith agat.
This is a huge point. So many of the people moving to Canada today are not in the slightest bit interested in actually 'being Canadian'. Unfortunately most Canadians can't seem to grasp what a detrimental effect that is having on the countries sense of identity and solidarity as a people. Further they actually go out of their way to enable this lack of assimilation under a misguided attempt to be inclusive. Vancouver especially felt like a city of people living peacefully side-by-side but not actually living as one collective society. This led to so much underlying tension and I think is a huge reason why some describe the city as 'soulless' and 'lonely'.
@@tonymcconville326 Yes. The same can be said about Montreal and Toronto. The only culturally Canadian locations are medium- to small-sized cities and the countryside. The major cities are the United Nations under Canadian law, for the most part.

HOWEVER #4 was complete nonsense. Canada is literally FULL of nature and wide-open spaces... You lived in one of the largest urban cities in Canada. Vancouver is a highly-populated bustling metropolis. You think that’s what our entire country is like??? What an absurd comparison. If you were to check out a suburban area or smaller city/town you’d be literally surrounded by nature trails, parks, public gardens, fields and green spaces. It would put Ireland to shame in an instant! Wow.
