  • Gary Rowett was appointed as Interim Manager for the final 8 games of a chaotic 2023/24 season to try to help Birmingham City steer away from the the EFL Championship relegation places. Despite an upturn in results and a significant improvement in defence Gary's efforts proved be in vain as Birmingham City were relegated to League One in their final match of the season despite beating playoff bound Norwich City 1-0.
In this podcast we look at the teams performance in the final 8 matches under Gary Rowett and analyse the impact that he made and discuss some of the decisions that improved performances but also fell short of achieving the goal of avoiding relegation to League One.

Remember that the table is about points. GR made more points in 8 games than Rooney in 15 games with the same players and totally demoralised squad. He did a fantastic job with what he had. If it were not for Eustaces good start and GR's good finish to the season, we would have been relegated weeks if not months ago. GR gave us all hope.

As usual, a very common sense conversation between two Blues fans! My impression of GR? As a former defender he sets his stall on the defensive side of the game. We need someone like Juke (player/coach role) who can help out the forwards, both old and new.. I believe a season in league 1 will get us back to winning ways!! Keep the faith!! KRO

Gary did a good job and as expected we stopped shipping goals which was a problem for most parts of the season. We just fell short but fair play to Gary for taking the job on in the first place. I hope the club offer Jukey a player/coach role as he represents everything Blues fans want to see in a player and he is a great role model for younger players. KRO

    I'm a big Rowett fan.
I think he is a class manager and a great man.
Rowett had nothing to loose unfortunately for Birmingham.
If he kept you up he would have been a messiah.
Mowbray is a development coach so if he comes back you will rip leauge one up with the momentum to do well in the Championship the following season.
However I don't think you can go far wrong with Rowett personally.
I really don't know what has gone wrong with Burke ?
He was absolutely brilliant for us last year.

We should get so clarity on the manager situation soon and we are anticipating that Tony Mowbray will return if he is fit and well again. If that is the case Gary will always have a special place in the hearts of Blues supporters as a former player and manager and will always be welcome at St. Andrew’s. KRO

Great podcast as always. I agree, relegation wasn’t Rowett’s fault. He had such a difficult situation to take on - and respect to him for taking it on. I think bar him deciding to play Burke for the Rotherham game, he did a decent job under the circumstances. But I’m hoping Mowbray will be fit enough to return for the L1 season. KRO 💙🤍

Sorry guys my comment wasn't about Gary Rowett, but I was referring to the comment saying that we should approach Rosenior. My comment was meant to be light hearted - by losing their last game Hull (and so Rosenior) helped to send us down. Just to be clear I was a big fan of Gary Rowett as our player and as our manager first time around. Like I said his record when he came back wasn't bad, but the reality was that teams around us were doing better. A big disapointment for me was that I thought that Tony Mowbray's diagnosis might galvanise and motivate the squad if only to lift his spirits, but the opposite happened under Mark Venus. I know that Tony Mowbray has managed in League One with Blackburn (and Coventry?), but I'm unsure whether he is the right man for the job. And yes Rosenior is someone who we might want to consider. At any other time of the season Gary Rowett's record would have been more than acceptable, but with other teams around us FIGHTING to stay up it simply wasn't enough. I was looking at a Sky Retro video on TH-cam a day or two ago when John Terry was talking about his relationship with Jose Mourinho. Terry said something along the lines that he was prepared to come off the pitch in a coffin for his manager. With a handful of exceptions how often did we see that?
I hope it's just paper talk that we're thinking about signing George Byers. Having said that there needs to be some clarity about who will be in charge next season as the clock is already ticking about players becoming available. Portsmouth have released a lot of players and we could do worse than look at Sean Raggett who has vast experience of League One and is a solid centre back.
Let's face it there should be a lot of players happy to sign for us. We now have good owners and won't be in a situation where we might have financial problems, go into administration, not be able to pay players, get points deducted etc etc. How many other clubs in League One, Two or even the Championship can say that?
On the coaching side I want to see the last of Rooney's staff gone. No disrespect to him and I hope that he's recovering, but I don't see Tony Mowbray and his staff as being the best people for the job. He was clearly wrong when he said that we were not in relegation battle and if was his decision to let Kevin Long go for a couple of his old boys then that's unforgivable. I'd like to see Craig Gardner's position under review too.
Lastly as always a great video guys - always very objective about things and certainly get me thing about our great club. Nice to see Father and Son getting on so well too. I had a great relationship with my late dad, even though he was born in Aston and was a Villa fan!

Thank you very much for your comment which is greatly appreciated and you make some excellent points.
The big thing that stood out to me and Matt last season was the players attitudes where many of them did not seem to realise we were in a relegation battle and did not want to fight. As you point out this needs to be addressed with recruitment in the summer as we need to get players who will fight for the club and the manager in the same way you describe John Terry.
On the coaching side I would like to see Paul Robinson bought in permanently and also I’d like to see Jukey given a coaching role if he is not offered a playing contract. Personally, I would like to see Tony Mowbray back to lead us and I hope he is fit and well and able to do that. He got Blackburn promoted from League One a few seasons ago so he knows what it is all about. KRO

The club needs to establish a footballing brand before any managerial or player recruitment. For example, are we possession based/passing, are we aggressive/hard to beat, are we a counter attacking team, etc. Ideally, this would be established by the owners, technical director, etc…….. then we can appoint the right people based on the brand of football we’re planning to play. Every forward thinking club wants to play out from the back, but I think we need to think bigger than simply copying the trend.

Great video guys. I do disagree though, for me if Mowbray cannot come back (which would be really sad and I really rate him highly) Rowett is the natural choice. He knows the club inside out which has helped him get the turnaround we needed. Alright it was not enough but I don't think any other manager could have come in and got us as close as he did. He's just had 8 games with the squad and will know who to clear out and who to keep which helps with planning ahead. He's a good manager and I think to prioritise style of play over results will just see be making the same mistake as we did getting Rooney in. Rowett is a capable championship lvl manager so if Mowbray cannot come back then we should be all out on trying to get Rowett in. League one isn't the same and tippy tappy sexy ball may not work when you have other teams used to just kicking the proverbial out of one another! - Once again great content and the back ground with the shirts is really smart! :D

I really like Rowett. I'm gutted for him as well as us that he couldn’t do the job that he was brought in to do, and that was to keep us safe. He obviously didn't have a lot of time, but in the time he did have, he fluffed his lines. There were some very odd decisions made at times, some really odd ones (I don't need to mention the most odd).
I think it's a combination of the sides in and around us and below us having better form and fight than us and Rowett for whatever reason not being able to get the beat out of the players consistently enough over his 8 games.
It's difficult to judge him only on 8 games, but we, of course, have his time as permanent manager previously to judge him on to. I was gutted when he was sacked to bring in Zola (the less said about that the better) and although under different owners it was right up there with the decision to sack Eustace and bring in Rooney.
Thar being said, if Mowbray isn't to come back. Whilst the squad needs a total face-lift, I feel that the dugout does too, so on that basis, I would say no to Rowett being our manager.

I think the downfall was the sacking of John Eustace and bring in SHREK/rooney KRO

Thank you for your comment. It’s true to say that the appointment of Rooney was exceptionally poor and had a negative effect on our season however in the final 8 games I think Gary did his best to try to keep us up. Unfortunately we fell slightly short. KRO

GR did a great job given the hand he was dealt. The last two away performances were disappointing and I think we were hoping that we would go and get big wins. Playing OB was obviously a "brain fade" but even Alex Ferguson made mistakes. I believe that he "over thought" the situation but he was trying to address the fact that Rotherham were going to put 10 men behind the ball and, unless you're coached by Pep Guadiola that does make it extremely hard and time consuming to pass through teams. At the time, people were debating about whether we should just go there and throw men forwards but if we had gone there with an open style of play and tried to outscore them then that could have backfired as well. Don't forget- we had only one fit striker available to select from. The problem of not being clinical enough and not scoring enough goals was happening for weeks before GR arrived. Therefore, I think it is grossly unfair for some people to criticise him for the fact that we could not go to Rotherham and score goals at will. We did actually get to 50 points at the end of the day, which would have been enough to avoid relegation in most seasons and would have been a fantastic achievement from where we were when he took over. Had Sanderson shown more professionalism before the Rotherham game and not had to be stripped of the captaincy, or the players hadn't completely ignored what they were told to do for that Huddersfield equaliser then we could easily have won one of those games 1-0 and stayed up. A lot of the better teams in the division only managed to beat Rotherham 1-0 and so it was not as easy as people assumed, and we had no centre forward. Even teams at the bottom of the championship can defend well and you don't even see premiership teams going to those sorts places and scoring at will.
I would be more than happy for GR to be given the job of getting us back up if TM isn't able to carry on.

Thank you for your comment. You make some really good points about the Rotherham and Huddersfield games and ones that we made in the pre and post match video for those matches.
I’m sure Gary with look back in hindsight and wish he had done some things different just like we all do in life ourselves. Overall I think Gary did the best he could with what he had to work with. KRO
