Great Videos. I was wondering if you own a yacht or boat yourself as you‘re always driving others? Have a lot of licenses for boating myself and was wondering how to become a captain. Maybe as some sort of work and travel.
I used to own a boat years ago but once I got into professional captaining and yacht management for my clients, I have very little time during the season for a vessel of my own. I hold a USCG 100 Ton Master credential and captain for clients and also maintain and captain yachts for a local marina and yacht sales facility. Appreciate your content man! Just found your channel. I would love to see an inside tour of this yacht, looks really nice. I still have lots of things to learn as I started sailing about one or two months ago, and your channel definitely helps!
Welcome to the channel! Thank you for watching and commenting. Congrats on your starting sailing, it’s a beautiful pastime for sure. I do have a walkthrough video of this exact boat. th-cam.com/video/Zk0bYxgelr8/w-d-xo.html Thanks again! Cheers!
It was an interesting move to turn the boat and have the wind on starboard, then leaving the helm…. Have wind onto the stern if you leave the helm. Of course there appeared to be very little wind.
It can definitely seem daunting. I fully get that and I work with my clients that I train and coach to show them that it really isn’t as bad as it seems. A little bit of knowledge, understanding and planning ahead can make all the difference. I am happy to hear these videos are able to help others. Thank you for watching and for your input and feedback! Cheers!
Thanks for all of your informative videos, I'm learning a lot about yachting for the future. Looking to purchase one in the next 5 years. What is the recommended maximum length for a owner operated vessel? I'm looking at a Princess 62.
I’m happy to hear that you’re learning from and enjoying the channel! Thank you your your comment! Princess 62 is a beautiful vessel. When it comes to owner operator, a lot depends on experience and training. If it’s your first vessel or if you’ve been boating for years with slightly smaller vessels can make a difference too. Spend some time with a captain to go over trainings that will help you for sure. To me, the size and specific vessel really depend on the owners needs and plans for their boating. With so many different boats and styles out there, some boats fit while others might not make as much sense. I am also a yacht broker and I help clients through this same process. I’m happy to help you through your search. Feel free to reach out any time! Thank you for watching!
I'm new to your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos. Any chance you would go into detail about how you got started in this industry and pointers for other who may be interested?
Welcome to the channel! Thank you for watching and for your input. I have gotten this question before and I can definitely try to put together a video like this.
I was told that when not using thrusters for any semi long periods that thruster breaker should be shut off also? Thoughts?? Keep up the great technical videos for us beginners!
I have never heard of this technique. Not to say that is couldn’t have some value though. I do typically turn the thrusters off as soon as docking or undocking is complete, so as not to use the batteries longer than needed. I could see turning the breaker off for an item that has a constant draw of power and would then drain the batteries if the shore power somehow went out, but the thrusters need to be turned on manually, so I’m not sure if that’s a concern? Thank you for watching and for your comment! I’m glad you are finding value in the channel! 🙌🏼
Great tutorials, thanks. I was wonding if you have experience with Xenta Joystick on typical shaft and prop boats. I just purchased a boat with that set up and after 20+ years docking I cannot get use to the joystick.
Oh man I’m sorry to hear that. It does take some time to put your trust into a little joystick, especially when you’ve been used to the standard throttles for docking. I have used similar joystick systems that are intergrated with shaft boats. I know that I have used your specific system before but sadly, I can not remember which boat it was on or too many details about the experience. I suppose if it went poorly and I had an issue, I would have remembered it more than if it was just another smoothing docking. Best of luck learning and congrats on the new boat! Thank you for watching! Cheers
Great quality video and brilliant explanations along the way thanks. Would welcome similar content with older/traditional boats without the IPS and joystick options (e.g. twin shaft drive diesels) if you happen to be working with any.
Hello Dan! I am very interested in boating but did not find a good "crew guide" what do you think is the biggest boat one could operate on his or her own? Is there some kind of rule telling you how much people you need on a boat by length? Thanks in advance
It’s great to hear you’re interested in getting into boating! Vessel operation and size will all depend on the individual and their experience. Working with a captain to train and learn can definitely help. Any vessel over 50’ is starting to get a bit large for a single individual but there are always exceptions to the rule. Vessels are rated for a specific number of guests based on the size, which will be displayed. Also make sure you have a life jacket for every guest on board. Thanks for watching and commenting!
With all the experience you could have, it finally depends on weather conditions, berthing environment and the technical equipment of the boat. No wind and no current make things easy. If you have 40kts cross wind, single engine, no thrusters and need to stern moore with your anchor out, you might need a good crew, even on a 35 footer.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I have gotten this request a few times and I will absolutely be doing some future videos with just the throttles. Stay tuned! Cheers!
In my travels throughout the Great Lakes and south to Florida, I have not come across any harbors that require or allow anchoring within them. Mostly because the harbors all have docks or piers which we dock up to. It’s a bit different than the Mediterranean mooring style where you drop anchor and back down into a birth. I’ve been told this difference has a lot to do with the available space. For locations that are tighter on space, Med mooring allows many more boats to be packed in. Thank you for your question!
Do these pod systems not have GPS Hold? Seems with some accelerometers and gyros they could easily add a Hold feature where the computer would stabilize the boat in the attitude you left it + or - a foot or two.
Not every pod boat has it but most of them have the capabilities for the feature. Cummins has Skyhook and Volvo IPS has Dynamic Positioning System (DPS). Thanks for watching and commenting!
If not already mentioned in the comments, it might be a good idea to say that the engines were already started and bow thruster tested. Check any flags for wind speed and direction and make sure chartplotter is on and working, etc. Perhaps prepare fenders and lines on starboard side for arrival if necessary. AIS check for local traffic .....
Also checking ahead with the arrival dock master for a slip, depth, current, approach, etc. I seem to recall you have dock hands ready but this comment did not mention which side you are planning to dock on.
I know I may seem to be a bit critical, and it may be beyond the advanced planning scope of this video, but it is, to me, an analogy to the lack of basic planning which led to the disaster in Afghanistan. Not trying to be critical of this video but people must think in advance. Looks like a very nice yacht. Would hate to see it, or others around it, damaged. Cheers!
Thank you for watching and for your thorough input. Some of the details you mention were left out for time sake. The destination was a spot we visit often, so birth/depth/approach are known. Great points and could be a topic for another video. Cheers!
Yes it is! Great catch! Northerly Island they call it now days. It has a concert venue that hosts some great acts too. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Yes and no. These big girls are heavy and if there is a strong wind moving them, it’s not as easy. If it’s calm, you definitely can move them short distances like closer to or further from the dock. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much! This specific yacht is a brand new, for sale vessel. Thanks for watching and commenting! Glad you like the videos. Plenty more coming! Cheers
Being based out of Chicago and working primarily on the Great Lakes, I don’t have to worry about tides. Depending on the vessel, there can be side boarding doors that allow for easier access at certain docks. For low docks, the swim platform is an easy option for boarding as well. Thank you for watching and commenting!
you have been very good these are beautiful videos to watch, also for me that I would like to buy a yacht as big as yours. Thanks my friend, sorry for my English I am deaf I have a cochlear implant, I have only been living in California for 7 years, I am from Venice Italy. I have subscribed to your channel. Mauro
Sorry but the title is misleading. Docking solo means you attach all the lines yourself not having someone else on the dock to assist. Perhaps you have already done this too but not easy when you are on flybridge.
Good point. I have done solo locking video from the flybridge and I plan to get future videos of other docking scenarios. Thank you for watching and for your input
Very smart move! I probably should have mentioned in the video that I already had the shore power off, switched over to generator, and started the engines. This helped shave a little time from the video. I do like to fire up the engines first and then start the rest of the preparation process with shore power/generator, etc. This allows the engines to warm a bit and if there happen to be any alarms or warnings that pop up, we would identify them before leaving the dock. Thank you for watching and for your input!
There is a world of difference in docking a million dollar joystick controlled IPS drive boat with bow thruster and any previous generation boats with no bow thruster or joystick positioning. The fancy drive system on this boat is what really allows it to be single handed.
This is very true. I have plenty of experience single handing old vessels and new vessels and thrusters/pods absolutely make for a much easier job all around. Thank you for watching and commenting
I am very sorry to tell you that the docking lines should of been tied to the railing in a way it is easy for people at dock can grab them . Also loose docking lines can easily go overboard and get into the propeller ??????
Do you ever feel like you are "cheating" when using the thrusters? As an airline pilot I couple the auto pilot and auto throttles to fly the approach but other times I don't "cheat" and fly it manually for practice.
Good question. When it comes to a vessel with shafts and just a bow thruster, oftentimes I don’t use the thruster and simply work with the props only. Vessels with pods and not shafts, are not as responsive with just the “sticks” and actually work better when using the joystick, so at times you’re better off going with the technology. I am perfectly capable and comfortable using only engines and no thrusters, and I do enjoy putting my skills to the test. My skills and what I am comfortable with are likely different than the standard boater…the tools are there for a reason so I coach my clients to use the tools provided for you. I hear many “old school” captains saying things like “it’s cheating” or calling thrusters demeaning nicknames. I work hard to train my clients to know that they have every tool available to them and to be 100% comfortable to use them. In an ideal situation, they may not need them but I absolutely do not want them being ashamed or nervous to use thrusters because of what some old school captains say. Technology has improved and the tools are made to make your life easier. Work smart not hard. Great topic and question. Thank you for watching and commenting. Hope this helps give my insight. Cheers!
Yes it does. The only thing that is needed is to hinge the anchor light that is tallest part of the boat. We typically hinge them to provide an extra foot of clearance, but they clear the lowest bridge in the immediate downtown Chicago River, which is DuSable Bridge at 18’7”. Are you a Chicago boater? Or planning the Great Loop? Thank you for watching and for the great question!
@@ElevateYacht I'd definitely like to be a Chicago boater but it'll take a few years but wouldn't want to buy a boat that can't fit under the bridges, that's half the experience. Huge fan of of the Carver C34 & 37, and the Prestige 420S.
@@cjcar5141 that’s awesome! I’d love to help you during your search when that time comes and I’m always here for questions or to bounce ideas off of. The nice part of getting a soft top flybridge, like in the video, is you get a whole separate entertaining area and you can still make it down the river easily. Imagine being on the top deck when cruising down the river to look at the buildings or fireworks nights or air and water show. But if it’s cold or rainy, you still have all the same functionality in the salon and lower helm too.
This specific vessel has the capability for DPS but it hasn’t been activated yet. All IPS systems have the ability to add the DPS for an extra cost. Good catch! Thank you for watching and commenting!
This is a great question and it is coming very soon. Volvo already has many updated features rolling out. Fully automated docking won’t be far behind. Thank you for watching and for your question!
Well, most owner operators could do this in those conditions (good weather, no wind). We all know it couldn’t be done like this with 20+kts wind. Also, it’s not that much of solo docking if there are 2 guys on the dock simultaneously grabbing the front and rear end lines
Hah no but that would have been great coaching moment if I had done that, I wouldn’t have cut it. Not sure what stern line you are thinking about. If you see the thin line i between my starboard side and the empty dock next to me, that is a cable divider we had put in. The dock next to us is a fuel dock and you can never be too careful with a brand new for sale vessel, so we added that cable for extra protection from drifting boats. Thank you for watching and for keeping me honest 🙏🏻
@@ElevateYacht I was worried that it was a line still attached. I only noticed it because only yesterday a crew never took my stern line off and I damaged a pier🙈 great caching video and good boat handling
@@brianmckechnie6430 we’ve all been there man! Typically, unless specifically requested by the client, I prefer to tie the boat only dockside, to help lessen the chance for instances like that. Granted we are in an area with no tides or significant currents, so it’s doable. Thank you for the feedback and for watching. Hope you enjoy the channel. I always welcome feedback or would love to hear other videos people would like to see. Cheers!
Dang, this is a great question and a super difficult one. There are so many boats that I like for different reasons. If I had to choose one for my family and what we like to do, it would have to be a flybridge boat with lots of entertaining space. If it has to be 50' exactly, my pick is Fairline 50 Squadron, but I would opt for the Squadron 53 if you allowed :) Thank you for watching and for the great question!
That’s a very hard number to pin down because each owner uses their vessel very differently. If it’s used as a floating condo or if you’re touring the Great Lakes and beyond. Fuel consumption on a Volvo IPS vessel is far lower than on other vessels due to the design and efficiency of the drive system. Plus, with a brand new Prestige, you receive a full bow to stern warranty, so that further reduces your cost of ownership. Oil/fluid changes maybe $5k. Will it be indoor heated storage? Thank you for watching and commenting!
If you are traveling in open waters at higher speeds, your fenders have the ability to bounce off the side of the boat with the wave action and that could cause marks or scuffs on the boat. You would also run the risk of losing a fender this way too. Beyond that, there really is no big harm in keeping your fenders down. Around the States, there is a big following of boaters who think this shows an amateur boater or one who doesn’t pay attention, but as another recent comment says, it could actually show preparedness and consideration. So really it just comes down to personal preference. Whatever floats your boat, or protects it 😅. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I missed the part where you checked the fluids & started the engines. I watched in horror as I saw you cast off, thinking you had yet to start the engines. I learned early on never to do that. Dingy or Yacht, always have motive power before you let go of land.
@@ElevateYacht I was worried about handling a boat 68-78 feet alone and there are not many who show it as well as you do in your videos. appreciate all the tips and advice. keep sharing and thank you very much.

Well done Captain!
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words! Cheers!
It was an interesting move to turn the boat and have the wind on starboard, then leaving the helm…. Have wind onto the stern if you leave the helm. Of course there appeared to be very little wind.
Can you please do more of this
I thought it was very complicated to run a yacht. But it looks easy if you know what to do. Thank you.
It can definitely seem daunting. I fully get that and I work with my clients that I train and coach to show them that it really isn’t as bad as it seems. A little bit of knowledge, understanding and planning ahead can make all the difference. I am happy to hear these videos are able to help others.

Welcome to the channel! Thank you for watching and for your input. I have gotten this question before and I can definitely try to put together a video like this.
Great presentation
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words! Cheers!
Thank you for watching and for your input. I will be bringing out some videos like this soon! I’m glad you like the videos so far! 🙌🏼
@@ElevateYacht thanks for the reply. Looking forward to it, thanks mate.
Great content! I'd like to see you do more docking without the joystick. Most of us can't afford those :) Thanks again!
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I have gotten this request a few times and I will absolutely be doing some future videos with just the throttles. Stay tuned! Cheers!
great job great video work thank you
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching and for the feedback! Cheers
Those low radar arches that fry your head are insane. Who designs these?
Great video
Thank you!
Capt. Dan, when is anchoring required and why do you not drop an anchor when you're in port / when would you drop an anchor in port?
Thanks for watching and commenting!
great job!!
Thank you very much for watching and commenting!
Cheers!
Very informative ! Grateful.. by the way, is that the former Meigs Airfield on your port?
Yes it is! Great catch! Northerly Island they call it now days. It has a concert venue that hosts some great acts too. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I was always wondering, that it is soo easy to move stuff around at the water surface, could you move a Yacht by your hand? aswer is yes.
Yes and no. These big girls are heavy and if there is a strong wind moving them, it’s not as easy. If it’s calm, you definitely can move them short distances like closer to or further from the dock. Thanks for watching!
??? -Wtf...
Very nice videos, just found them and very informative. Is this your boat, or a clients boat? Anyway, nice yacht👍
Thank you very much! This specific yacht is a brand new, for sale vessel. Thanks for watching and commenting! Glad you like the videos. Plenty more coming! Cheers
When your docking at a fixed dock especially at low tide how do get on and off the boat?
Being based out of Chicago and working primarily on the Great Lakes, I don’t have to worry about tides. Depending on the vessel, there can be side boarding doors that allow for easier access at certain docks. For low docks, the swim platform is an easy option for boarding as well. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Also in Chicago we have floating docks so depending on the water height it’s always the same height along side of the boat

Can you please do a boat tour
I will be releasing the tour of this vessel soon. Thank you for requesting!
I always start engine(s) before doing anything.
Slow is pro!
That’s exactly right! Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers!
Cheers!
Curious to know if this would fit under the Chicago River bridges?
Didn’t this boat have Dynamic Positioning System so it holds in place when you place fenders?
This specific vessel has the capability for DPS but it hasn’t been activated yet. All IPS systems have the ability to add the DPS for an extra cost. Good catch! Thank you for watching and commenting!
We have cars that park themselves, how far off are boats that dock themselves too?
This is a great question and it is coming very soon. Volvo already has many updated features rolling out. Fully automated docking won’t be far behind. Thank you for watching and for your question!
Chinese owners???
where's that subway sub shop that Jessie Smollett got that sub
🤣
7:11 Impressive! Zero wake at 1323mph!! :D
🤣🤣 had me going back to check that. Good catch. Thanks for watching!
Well, most owner operators could do this in those conditions (good weather, no wind). We all know it couldn’t be done like this with 20+kts wind. Also, it’s not that much of solo docking if there are 2 guys on the dock simultaneously grabbing the front and rear end lines
Did you cut a 3mins 20 to take the stern line off you forgot?
Typically, unless specifically requested by the client, I prefer to tie the boat only dockside, to help lessen the chance for instances like that. if you could buy any 50 ft. boat which one would buy?
Dang, this is a great question and a super difficult one. There are so many boats that I like for different reasons. If I had to choose one for my family and what we like to do, it would have to be a flybridge boat with lots of entertaining space. If it has to be 50' exactly, my pick is Fairline 50 Squadron, but I would opt for the Squadron 53 if you allowed :) Thank you for watching and for the great question!
your videos are great.Keep up the good work
@@walterhluchyj3721 thank you very much! I’ll keep em coming for you guys 🙌🏼
What is the cost to run per year?
That’s a very hard number to pin down because each owner uses their vessel very differently. If it’s used as a floating condo or if you’re touring the Great Lakes and beyond. Fuel consumption on a Volvo IPS vessel is far lower than on other vessels due to the design and efficiency of the drive system. Plus, with a brand new Prestige, you receive a full bow to stern warranty, so that further reduces your cost of ownership. Oil/fluid changes maybe $5k. Will it be indoor heated storage?
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Why is it not good to allow fenders to hang while underway?
