It's perfectly legal to use a Highbankers in NSW, Australia. Highbankers or sluice box alone is not illegal. The use of motorize or mechanical pump in highbanking is what's illegal. The mining act 1996 and the pump moving the water from A to B is covered by the water management act 2000. Cheers
excellent work Wal n Liz! i think a powerful magnet will separate the black sand from the gold most times & make your panning alot easier, all the best kimbo!
Like a lot of people i found that really informative, been looking at this area and thinking of doing some panning just for fun. really good work guys.
@tfa40729...Trevor, thanks for your constructive input. We set the gold catching section of our high banker into 2 different configurations, hence the 2 mats on the top section of the high banker. The 1st mat traps all the coarse gold, the 2nd mat traps all the fine flour gold. The lower section of the high banker, is used only for trapping sapphires hence no mats and no clean up shown. We feel it's not necessary to show each mat separately as they both combine to do the same thing....see cont.
WOW , That is a great day lot's of color very nice video, I like your high-banker setup!. You gave me some idea's about different matting thanks again and you got my subscription. Peace
Glad you enjoyed the vid Paul. The Banker is an older version of the one I mainly use but is very efficient at this particular spot as it only has very fine flour gold. All the very best.....Wal.
I hate to say this but... You guys deserve all the gold you get for your effort!! I am not sure if you guys profit from this, but I do hope that it was a great day out. Backbreaking work by the gentleman, and the meticulous panning technique by the lady. But seriously, thank you for the informative video.
Congrats on the Video guys, Obviously well practiced, been there and done it before and know what you're doing. I'm just getting back to it in Tassie after a long while so we'll se how we go :)
Found this combination to be the most efficient. The expanded metal is not your typical aluminium expanded. It is in actual fact expanded roof access grate which can be sourced from any of your commercial roofers. The sides of this mesh are vertical and not angled and this makes it a lot more efficient on fine flour gold, because of the bigger vortex it creates. Best of luck!....Wal
Hi Brad...haven't panned much in that area....only detected in the triangle. Have panned a lot up in the high country between Mt Hotham and Dargo over the years with good results. The Crooked River near Dargo is certainly worth a shot ...Regards Wal.
Hi wal and liz thanks for that,i have found lots of old mines around the copeland area around the lower barrington tops and which looks like could be a good camping area on the river up there just have to get up there now and have a go.cheers.
thanks for watching....a mate of mine has one of those "Marks" drop riffle sluices and working side by side with us ends up with half of what we get....problem with them is they fill up too quickly with black sand and as Oallen has only flour gold much of it washes through. If you clean them out every hour or so it helps. Cheers Wal.
Thanks for watching oshiroivan, the sluice will get you gold every time you go out. with the 2 detectors your talking about ,both are a very good machine. my preference would be slightly towards the minelab as have an edge on ground balancing in heavy mineralized soil.
hi Scott... thanks for watching. This is one of the many gold bearing streams within an hours drive from where we live. It's a popular area as it has mainly flour gold which was very difficult for the old timers to clean out. Every flood replenishes the gold and it is not uncommon to get around 5 grams of gold for an easy days hi banking. this would probably equate to around a cubic meter per 5 grams. On a really good day we get as much as 10 grams. Good luck on your local streams...Cheers Wal.
G'day 234...the place is Oallen Ford on the Shoalhaven River. Its at the crossing between Neriga and Tarago. You'll find quite a few people there on the weekends but it is quite a large area that can accommodate a big crowd. We mainly Hi-Bank but if you haven't got one a standard river sluice would be the next best thing ...you'll also need a gold pan, 1/4" sieve, and a shovel. Try downstream where the rock bars cross the river....the opposite bank to where you can drive is best..Cheers Wal.
Thanks for your concern sepfirem. We always double pan our first run and never have more than a couple of specks in the 2nd pan. Once you yourself become efficient at gold panning then maybe you will also be able to speed up a little yourself. Again, thanks for your concern but unfortunately, we do not lose any gold for you to pan behind us....Cheers, Wal
hi great vid... im from Gulgong, have done a bit of panning years ago and only ever found specs,, waiting on the arrival of my metal detector, and looking forward to getting back into looking .. thanks for sharing this vid, it stired up the old gold fever ,lol
Thanks for the comment. We run a Minelab GPX 5000 and do quite well on the goldfields. The afternoons high-banking only yielded a few grams. Cheers, Wal
A good hi banker will pick up every bit of gold.....the amount of water is regulated by the size of the box. the one shown runs at its optimal performance and catches even the smallest flour gold. Our system runs the classifier full length of the box as we use it for sapphires as well. You may be getting confused by seeing no water running on the top box.....It's going through the classifier and over the trap underneath....Cheers Wal.
Thanks for watching Bryan....I've also got a vid out on How to build a high volume high banker that may be of interest to you.....Whipstick is a great place ...got some good gold from there....Cheers Wal.
You two are great. Looks like you are having a great time. Thanks for posting. Try screening your cons or classifying as they say in the US before you pan. It really does make the panning process easier. My wife and I get a kick out of finding pickers in the screens when we look through the screened material. We kind of race each other looking around to find a piece of gold and giggle like kids when we do.
Thanks very much for your comment Thomas. Great to see that your wife also gets involved with your great hobby. We find that double panning our concentrates from this area gets us 99% of the gold in our highbanker. The 1% which goes back into the river; goes to the "Gold Gods" and for this, they look after us on our following trips...lol Hope all's going great over your way. Cheers, Wal

cool setup looks like it catches the fines really well, i like the wedge design and that big aluminum expanded metal i gotta find some of that here in the states
@rooshooter1977 Glad you liked the video. Certainly great spot. Thanks for the tip but if you use enough water on the front wash the gold won't float on the back wash. Certainly if you're not use to panning flour gold then a drop of dish liquid will certainly make it easier for you. Look forward to possibly catching up on the river and exchanging ideas. Cheers, Wal and Liz
LOL... Unfortunately, our time on this earth is extremely short. It's best to somehow squeeze some spare time into the equation of life before the chance passes you by. Sorry to hear how busy you are and hope spare time becomes more favorable down the track. All the very best, Wal
Glad you enjoyed the vid Clouds. Certainly a pleasant day out on the river and a good place for a swim during the heat of the day. All the very best...Wal.
glad you enjoyed the vid...the shoveling looks like hard work but when you pace yourself as lazily as we do.....15 min dig.... 15 min rest ...15 min...chat....then the work is really not that bad. We only chase the gold and gemstones for a hobby so don't need it to pay the bills....Cheers Wal.
@topster57....We tend to pan all our concentrate in the field rather than bring it home. If we have a lot of concentrate we'll double pan it first, but generally we find the second pan isn't worth the effort as only a few specks find their way through. Hope all is going great for you up north....Wal
Your best set up to start looking for gold would be a standard river sluice and a gold pan. If the bug get strong enough, convert the river sluice to a high banker by adding the water pump. This will increase the amount you get tenfold. Best of luck. Cheers, Wal
i have been looking for a ideal setup to run as i am keen as to start going on the hunt for gold on weekends as i have been bitten by the gold bug after watching bering sea gold on t.v. big thumbs up and good luck in your future prospecting : )
you guys are becoming famous! Love your vids, this video is the first time to see Liz on camera, what a beauty! are ya'll rich yet? wish I were hangin' with you guys, too much fun.
Thank you Wal, that is excellent news for me. A mate of mine and I are planning on sussing out the Macquarie and Turon river area with pans to see if I can justify the cost of a Gold Cube. I live in Sydney. You guys sure do travel a lot eh! I just joined the prospectingaustralia forum BTW, it seems a very nice site,
+Jeff H he mate i live in sydney to and have just started out prospecting .. if your ever interested in going out as a group to move more gravel then hit me up and see what we can arrange i generally go out with a couple of mates and as they say many hands make light work and naturally even split of the yellow stuff that of which we find anyway .. cheers dave
thanks for watching Wayne....not hard to get bitten by that gold bug....get out as often as you can ....the more you go the better you get and the more bitten you become. Try to go to a place like the ford first. You will learn a lot as the gold is reasonably consistent and there is always someone out there most weekends who are willing to share advice......happy hunting Wal.
Thanks for watching kim and hope you enjoyed the vid.A lot of the areas around here are Basalt based with a lot of black Spinel. These unfortunately are not magnetic so we have to do it the hard way. I wish the streams we worked were magnetite based as the use of a rare earth magnet would certainly make life a lot easier. Best wishes....Cheers Wal.
You don't need a permit or license to prospect in NSW. Good idea to make your hi-bank set up as light as possible. Most of the best spots require at least a kilometer walk. The hi-banker you see in the video is a combination for gold and sapphires. Our gold only hi-banker has only one tier and is much more portable than the one you see. Best of luck and C U in the field one day. Cheers, Wal
Thanks for watching ARELAV and hope you enjoyed them. Sorry to hear that you have trouble prospecting in Russia as it is a very enjoyable pastime.Best wishes from the land down under...Cheers Wal.
Thanks for watching PyRo, Tried magnets on our smaller Hi-Bankers but found no real advantage in them as lots of the "black Sands" in our areas are non magnetic.....Cheers Wal,
One suggestion, classify your material down further when working with very fine gold, it saves you a hell of alot of panning strokes, maybe #50 or even #100 mesh, you can save those #50+ers and pan them separately. Nice simple set up!
Glad you enjoyed the vid bulls, sounds like you had some great trips out Nundle way in the 70's. Good luck in finding the old rocker box and hope there's still plenty of gold there for you...best wishes, Cheers Wal.
Love ya videos guys, you're a bloody character Liz. I bought my first pans last week and me and the girl will be around Fossikers Way in august, hope to see yas round.
nice gold, ill prolly see you down there 1 day,lol as its my regular haunt, but i must say, you really need to use dishwashing liquide when doing your backwash! Cheers Rusty!
wow, i didnt know about the "Grey area", now ive got something to challenge the rangers with lol, and i did correct my self about the Oz and grams in my last post to you hehehe, im headed down there again this easter holidays.
@highwaycruiser..4oz. for 6hrs.? We average 4gm. in about the same time. We've had talks with Rangers who are not Mine Wardens and have explained to them the rules we have discussed with the mines department. Using a water pump is not illegal as it would also have to relate to the legalities of farmers pumping water to their household tanks. You are shoveling the material manually and not using mechanical means to move the material. It's a gray area that has never been challenge in a court.
Hi Ian... haven't done a great deal in the New England area but i know of people who have done really well there. There is also a lot of gemstones especially in the form of sapphires, garnets, topaz associated with the gold up that way. My advice is google up Bonzle.com and go to your local area and it will show you all the gold mines there. Look for creeks that feed off these mines ..especially the alluvial areas and give preference to faster draining creeks with plenty of bedrock..Cheers Wal.
This river only produces fine "flour" gold....which made it extremely difficult for the old timers to clean it out....hence it's relatively easy to get your 3 to 5 grams a day. The majority of rock bars are replenished with gold after every flood. It's one of the best rivers to practice your panning on as it's not the easiest gold to recover.
G'day Mark...don't use jet dry or rare earth mag, a lot of our black sand is not magnetic down here . We have yet to loses any gold and the second pan is all the backup required....all the best ...Cheers Wal.
Nice...You make a great team. Do you own a MineLab metal detector and ever hit the gold fields their??? I would love to take a MineLab and go on a three week vac their. Two weeks in the fields and one like you highbanking. What was the final clean up weight???
Are you guys on a claim, or is this just a river where you set up and started digging? looks good...that is a nice ammount of gold...how much material did you run through your highbanker to get that ammount of gold?...any idea how many buckets, pounds, or yardage? I am doing a similar type of thing and am curious how much material others go through to find that kind of volume of gold. NICE JOB!
Jessica Miller Glad he shows an interest in prospecting as it is a great hobby the whole family can get involved in. We spend a lot of time on the streams so there will be good chance we will meet up some day...all the best...Wal.
Thaks for the comment david. we mainly show the vids for family and friends with an interest in the outdoors. We do not make them to encourage the public for financial gain. Some sell their gold...some use it for their personal collection....some like us make jewelery from it. All these topics are a separate vid in themselves directed at a different market.....Cheers Wal.
hey wal .. any news regarding the use of dredges in our rivers and creeks ??? I have seen a couple of clips of a couple of fellahs using a hand dredge with bilge pumps to push the material through the hose....I would think the epa would get in on that action somehow as well as the licensing board lol..On another note I have begun making my sluice has cost me $70 so far and I have enough material to make a few extras lol (sheetmetal worker) I have my own folder but will have to pop rivet the joins as i dont have a pulse welder.. my son works for a company that makes wool wadding and such so I am going to see what they have in way of a material to trap goldI grabbed some marine carpet and am yet to go to bunnings lolwill post a video when I assemble it I dont need to show my safe work practices at home lol which I do impliment btw lol
Motorized dredges are 100% illegal throughout the whole country and if you get caught with one, there's some pretty hefty fines. Hand operated suction pumps such as yabbie pumps although being mechanical to a degree are tolerated. One needs only say to an inspector that he is pumping yabbies...lol Look forward to hearing about your adventures with the banker and hope the gold cooperates for you. Cheers, Wal
+corey Wilson Thanks for watching corey. NSW does not require a fossicking permit. However, a permit is required if you wish to fossick in state forests. The full set of rules can be obtain from the net by looking up (Fossicking Regulations for NSW). All the very best of luck, Wal
highway cruizer: Wal said at the end of the video they were at Oallen Ford. It's just out of Nerriga. Lots of guys get down there. I got some very fine gold there too.
hey Wal I went out on my first trip panning at turon with my makeshift sluice cut back my expenses making the sluice as a mate supplied a majority of the material from his scrounging expertese went out on a 3 day trip to turon unfortunately the campfire and beers outweighed the panning trip we did do some test panning though and managed to get a few tiny flakes 1 being the size of a pin point lol next trip i am heading down to shoalhaven thinking the upper river is the place to go up around yanwal if i can find access on google earth
+DRIVER50L ...Even though the gold was thin, by the sounds of it the beer and campfire more than made up for it. Best of luck on the Shoalhaven mate. Cheers Wal.
Thanks for the comment. We find it unnecessary to classify, as we are only panning off the concentrates at the end of the session. When we have a lot of gold, we double pan to speed up the process. On average, a daily clean up, usually takes us no more than 10 minutes and find that we lose an insignificant amount of gold.....cheers and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Liz can work that pan like a pro. Her technique is fluid. I definitely learned some things.
Glad you got some tips from the vid Frank. Hope the gold is being kind to you. Cheers Wal.
Thank you for the no BS demonstration on highbank gold mining. Most appreciated
Wal n Liz I love all of your videos . Please don't stop. Hope You find a big nugget soon.
Great to hear that you enjoy some of our vids Steven and hope luck has been following you around. All the best...Wal.

Glad you enjoy them Ken and hope the gold is being kind to you as well...All the very best..Wal.
Found this combination to be the most efficient. The expanded metal is not your typical aluminium expanded. Thanks for watching dale, never had a go at panning near Kempsey...but have spent many hours fishing in the Macley.....all the best ..Cheers Wal.

Wal nLiz what's the most gold you've found in a day ? Great sleuce !!!
Wal nLiz
Nice Video! you can tell it's not Liz's first day panning thats for sure,All the best of luck in your future prospecting adventures!

keep finding GOLD WalnLiz..i keep following and watching your vids..GOODLUCK..

glad you enjoyed it Daniel and thanks for watching, Cheers Wal.
Glad you enjoyed the vid and hope your weekend trip was a great success....Cheers Wal.
Good video. I'm wondering would it be easier on ya to leave the last of the panning until you are at home on a cool evening.
wow, i didnt know about the "Grey area", now ive got something to challenge the rangers with lol, and i did correct my self about the Oz and grams in my last post to you hehehe, im headed down there again this easter holidays.
Thanks for the comment driller....she gets a lot of practice as we venture to the gold fields on most weekends...all the very best...Cheers Wal.
Hi Ian... haven't done a great deal in the New England area but i know of people who have done really well there.
Thanks for watching Ben and hope luck follows you around with the new detector....Cheers Wal.
NICE JOB!
You should come to Rushworth, Victoria. The gold rush was here and that is why it's called Rushworth aka worth the rush..
Hope you enjoyed the vid Jessica. We travel through Rushworth quite often when heading south and it's a really great little place. All the best...Wal.
My son like to find gold. He would like to meet you one day! Wal nLiz
Jessica Miller
Glad he shows an interest in prospecting as it is a great hobby the whole family can get involved in. We spend a lot of time on the streams so there will be good chance we will meet up some day...all the best...Wal.
Yes, he would really like to meet you!
From Jess
Thanks for the comment Jason, hope you enjoyed the vid mate.Best wishes, Wal.
I enjoyed watching your video very much thank you for sharing
Great to hear that you enjoy some of our vids fuser, and all the very best...Wal.
Amazing to watch. However, it got me wondering whether gold panning is legal in Australia? Where are you going to sell the gold after?
Gday wal and Liz!
Love your videos! Just wondering can anyone just turn up with sluice and petrol pump and start sluicing??
Cheers Ben
hey wal .. any news regarding the use of dredges in our rivers and creeks ???
Cheers, Wal
Love the video. I wish all the best to you
+corey Wilson Thanks for watching corey. NSW does not require a fossicking permit. However, a permit is required if you wish to fossick in state forests. The full set of rules can be obtain from the net by looking up (Fossicking Regulations for NSW). All the very best of luck, Wal
Wal nLiz

highway cruizer: Wal said at the end of the video they were at Oallen Ford.
Cheers Wal.
hope xmas is good for you and that a gold nugget finds it's way into your pan on the next outing ...Cheers Wal.
