"Simple Man" is absolutely one of the greatest songs ever recorded by any band, period. I often refer to it as one of the few "perfect" songs ever written and I stand by that statement.

When my daughter was young she told me she’d never listen to Skynyrd. I caught her one day, crying. She said Simply Man made her think of me and the things I always told her. To this day I tear up when I hear it. I love my kid.

This song was written after the Van Zant family lost their mother. They set around at that time and began to share the sayings and wisdom that their mother passed on over the years and it eventually turned into what you are hearing. A case of respite CREATING art.

@@phnxbyrdphnxbyrd6403 I said mother when I meant grandmother. My mistake bro.
Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother and Gary Rossington's mother died, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.
"We just put down in a song what our mama or grandma had said to us," Rossington told Paul Ingles. "They really wrote it, we just played it."

@@SPARTANSIX-1 Not to rain on your parade but...Once you get to know about Gary you know he is constantly getting stories mixed up or just flat out wrong. Ronnie actually wrote that song in the shower. These are Ronnie's words...I’ve had a lot of ’em come to me in the shower,” he said, going on to add, “I wrote the song ‘Simple Man’ in the shower.“ Gary likes to give himself credit on a lot of things, but this song is about a son and mother relationship nothing more or less. Of course Gary had a part in it, but the lyrics were already down before Ronnie even approached him with it.

I went to school with Ronnie Van Zants daughter Tammy for a short time when she lived in Virginia. She was a very sweet and humble person. I felt so bad that she lost her Dad at such a young age. I hope her family has looked out for her. Ronnie's 2nd wife got his fortune. A very sad story of the loss of such a great talent.

Got out of the Navy in 1979.. got a asst Mgr position at bar/restaurant that were in malls called Chelsea Street Pub. Lovely young lady worked there and she was dating the drummer from Molly Hatchet- Bruce ( Not sure of the spelling) Crum/ Crumb. Met him and spoke briefly, very nice guy, heck of a drummer. Gina invited us to go to Houston where she was meeting up with Bruce, they were back up to The Outlaws. Backstage the lead singer had a particular whiskey he drank and someone had drank his. He was known for fighting and he looked at me and I just said ,I ain't the one, that's open for interpretation but like in the Skynyrd song ,comes to fix and I'm prepared to fight, nothing happened . Concert was great, both bands, the band was getting on the bus and rolling to the next show. They gave us rooms that they weren't going to use anyway so we didn't have to drive back to San Antonio that night. The couple I drove up with and I shared a room and the lady liked me, and I liked her back, but that's rock n roll and another story....

Listened to this a couple of days ago... love it! Excellent song, one of my favorite bands.💓💯🎶 I thought you would like it... Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer from 1964-1977(he passed away). His brother Johnny Van Zant became the lead singer since 1987.😎❤️ *Corrected my typos after I was told about them.

Great Southern Rock band. I can tell by your accent that you are from the south. I sent this to my 29 yr old recently and to my surprise it was already his favorite song. I think most son's can relate and connect to this powerful message.

I'm new to your channel, so I'm not sure if you've been told about the plane crash in 1977 that killed Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot John Gray. I was so lucky to have seen them in Denver just a few months prior to the crash. Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer at that time. They disbanded after the crash, but many of the remaining members reunited in 1987 and Ronnie's younger brother Johnny became the lead singer.

I have a 25 yr old son. He's an only child and this is his ring tone when he calls me. He said it reminds him of his dad. He is his daddy. He has the same out look on life that his dad does. Don't stress the small stuff, it will pass. My husband lives by 1 thing. If what ever it is that is troubling you lasts more then 8 days then it's time to stress it. If it has passed by day 8 you know it was just a test of faith and will.. and you passed the test. It's gone an you are still standing strong. My son is the same way

Skynyrd was the first live concert I attended of ( in 1974) and it was amazing. They played Free Bird as an encore and stretched the guitar 'solo' to a 45 minute masterpiece. When the concert was over, you could hardly see the other side of the arena for the 'fog' hanging in the air
