I Can't get thru this without crying. I do love Lynyrd Skynyrd. As a 60 yr old grandmother, I have shared this with my 36 yr old incarcerated son. It speaks to my values.
In my humble opinion, one of the strongest debut albums any band from the classic rock era ever made. Pronounced gave birth to Skynyrd classics that were still being hammered out on the set list night in and night out some 40+ years later. This album spawned such songs as (I Ain't The One), (Tuesday Gone), (Simple Man), (Gimme Three Steps), (Things Going On), (Mississippi Kid), and the legendary (Free Bird) to name a few. A couple of little known facts about the album are the band was told they needed one more song to complete the album. So Ronnie suggested Simple Man to producer Al Kooper of Blood, Sweat, & Tears fame. After playing it for Kooper at Studio One in Doraville, Ga. where the album was recorded, Al Kooper said "we're not recording that. It's a stupid song that don't mean nothing." But the band thought otherwise, so front-man, band leader, and all around tough guy Ronnie Van Zant walked over to Kooper, took him by the arm, walked him out to the studio parking lot, opened the driver side door to his Bentley, put him in the car and slammed the door shut. Ronnie then leaned in through the driver side window and said, "go on now Al. We'll call you when we're done cutting it." Asked about the incident with Ronnie later, Kooper remarked only "I feared him." A few weeks after sessions at Doraville's Studio One ended, Ronnie called Al Kooper in New York and told him they had another song for the album that he wanted to record right now because he liked it just as it was and he was afraid the arrangement might change too much before they went back into the studio for their second album. Kooper booked the band studio time in NYC and flew them up. He would later say the minute he heard the opening notes he knew the band had a top 10 hit. The song they recorded that day was Sweet Home Alabama, which Kooper talked the band into holding in reserve to have as a major song on what would become their second studio album, "Second Helping." So it's feasible Alabama could've also ended up on the debut album as well if the band had not chosen to hold it in reserve to use on Second Helping.
This song will be played as my ashes are scattered. I always connected with this song because I'm just a Simple Man. I never needed money or fame to enjoy life. I find pleasure in the simple things.
This will play at my funeral also. It is how I was raised in a blue collar town. In fact, many of the songs from Skynnyrd was just the way we grew up. Ronnie was a MASTER songwriter, miss him and the others.
My sister and her oldest son had a special connection through music. He passed away just six weeks after she did, we played this at his funeral. They were one of his favorite bands. We played “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones at my sisters funeral. (His mother) Whenever I hear either song, I still tear up.
Lynyrd Skynyrds lead singer (Ronnie Van Zant) suffered from a common throat problem that would cause him to lose his voice and they often had to cancel because of this problem. In some of the old videos you can tell his voice is gone, especially, the set that was recorded at “The Old Grey Whistle Test”. You can really tell at that gig that his voice is gone. Ronnie was actually gonna quit as lead singer, write their tunes, and manage them. His replacement was gonna be his younger brother Johnny Van Zant, the singer of the current band. Great reaction video!! I’m a new subscriber and I really enjoyed this video.
"if you're not chasing something that you're actually passionate about, then money will control you". Words of utter wisdom. Truth right there. Thank you.
I've heard this was written after one of the bands grandmother's passed away recalling her words to him. They changed it to a mother perhaps just lyrically it fit. Who ever she was she had great wisdom and advice.
I love this song. The first time I heard it, it was like a gut punch to get my shit together. Life is not hard if you focus on the most basic, simple issues. Do not get lost in the weeds. That was in 1973. This one still hits to this day.
Every one wants to hear Free Bird, but A Simple Man has always been my favorite Skynard song. The message that it delivers syncs perfectly with my personal philosophy. Be a simple kind of man. Life is only as complicated as we let it become.
I'll tell you something about this singer, Ronnie VanZant. He wrote the lyrics to this and other songs. He never wrote the lines on paper. "If you have to write it down, it means you can't remember it. If you can't remember it, is it really any good?"
Everytime I hear this song , when he sings ",Don't forget son , there's someone up above" I always point my fingers toward the heavens , and you did the exact same thing! We're on the same wave length.👌🤗
It's not that Ronnie had a bad performance with Free Bird live it's that he was holding back so much. Ronnie isn't a vocal powerhouse he's just a man with a lot of heart and soul. I promise you will love this song live.
I love this reaction! It doesn't matter what the government is doing or what the media is trying to get us to do. We've taken it upon ourselves to bridge the gap through mutual love and respect of great music! Keep rockin my friend!
I’m retired Army and watched our government divide us along racial lines; along political lines; along religious lines and just recently along vaxx vs non-vaxxed. Music is that bond! Thanks for speaking the truth…
There hasn’t been a country rock band or singer in existence who hasn’t covered this classic. Skynyrd’s is the best but I love it no matter who does it. Great reaction. Thank you
I tell you true. What I might not have heard from my very troubled Mother (bless her soul), came around like a miracle from this band. Thank you God, you do work in mysterious ways.
This is another group that I grew up listening to. Ronnie Vanzant was the driving force behind this band. He was there leader on and off stage. I loved his approach to singing lead vocals. He didn't jump around and act like a fool and when it was time for the other members of the group to shine he would step back and let them have the spotlight. Curtis Lowe is a song I would like you to react to. I'm a 70's guy and they were a 70's band. I cried when there plane crashed in 1977 because I knew I would never hear Ronnie's voice live again. 🤘🎸🇺🇸
Being 62 now and raising 3 boys in the Texas farmlands, I am beyond impressed seeing how this song impacts you, just like it does the rest of us. My own mother (Rest her soul) gave me this same message in 1971 when we were very poor. I listened, and I passed it on to my boys. I find peace in knowing my sons will do the same. It's a message, it's a ballad, It's a moral culture. Those that tear up actually get it.
Brother Ronnie, (RIP), was known for doing his concerts bare footed and he never wrote down the lyrics to his songs, he just remembered them. A true artist in every sense of the word. PEACE!
Oh there are tons of Skynyrd songs you can do. I think "Gimmie Three Steps" is frigging hilarious in addition to being musically really great, some really great lyrics there.
This is the song my son wanted played for the mother-son dance at his wedding reception. He grew up listening to this kind of music and still loves it...The ballad of Curtis Lowe was one of the best ever!! I was raised in south MS. My dad and both of my grandfathers were cotton farmers (sharecroppers). All my brothers and I worked hard ( was the only girl out of six kids). I learned life skills that most younger people do not know about. My dad took me everywhere with him when he could. I know some of the most awesome men that ever lived and a lot of them had darker skin than me and they would all kill a sob to protect this little white girl... My parents raised me to respect everyone no matter what their background. The south is not what what you see in the media. All y'all are welcome to my "neck of the woods" anytime.
For me this song is about a mother on her deathbed, telling her only song the most important lessons to take with him. I wish my mother could have had this talk with me, but that wasn't in our cards. When I listen to this song, or play it on my guitar, it tears open an old wound, but sometimes you gotta let an old sore get some air on it before it'll heal. From one Southerner to another: glad you reviewed this song, and glad I found this channel.
My first concert at 3 years old with my daddy was lynyrd skynyrd it’s my daddy’s absolute favorite band!! He can also tell you just about everything you could want to know!!!!
Read up on Ronnie. He was a lyrical genius. Of course the band were all musical geniuses. Ronnie was an amazing man that I’ve had a heart tie with since I was 11. Now I also have one for his brother a wonderful, selfless gentle man who has the Holy Spirit all over him- Johnny. My loves❤️
These lyrics are as thoughtful and intelligent as you will find anywhere... personal yet universal. Humble yet profound. This band was one of the biggest success stories and also one of the worst tragedies in the music industry at that time. I've been a Skynyrd fan for 40 years.
Possibly my favorite song ever, thnx for reacting...It's hard to pinpoint a favorite song, so many genres and styles and for me it often changes, but this song always bubbles to the top. Lyrics and vocals, powerful...the smashing sound of the snare and the guitar riff that just grabs your heart and pulls and pulls
Their song ," The Ballad of Curtis Loew", another great lesson in life. And," Tuesdays Gone ", 'They Call Me The Breeze", They just write great music....
@@txtiger6927 YES, and JJ Cale is one of the best song writers ever, way underappreciated. Eric Clapton covered a few of his songs too. Skynyrd made The Breeze their song, so to speak.
I consider having grown up during this incredible era of music, when creativity and providing us with the most important messages our young minds would ever listen too and absorb, was an absolute gift. It was song's such as this one that left an indelible imprint on my psyche and 50 + years later, it remains. There were a great many other bands that provided that same gift. I am so thankful that I took those words to heart, as I know many others did. I was also blessed to have seen the original line up before the plane crash that took Ronnie's (among others) life and tragically altered the lives of others. I can only hope that these words can have the same lasting impact on other young listeners as they did on so many of us. They will only be better and happier people if they do. As my own mother taught me, life is about the simple things.
Along the with your comments about being passionate about what you choose to do, one of the best pieces of advice my dad ever gave me was....."If you find a job or career you love and are passionate about you'll never work day in your life" ✌️❤️️ (NOTE: Followed his advice, been blessed enough to spend the last 25yrs as a firefighter/paramedic)
When you follow your passions you become great at it and that’s how you make a living off of it. Lynyrd Skynyrd will live on forever. R.I.P. Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Allen, Jojo, Leon, Billy and Ed✌🏼❤️🤘🏼
Bro! It brings me to tears to my eyes watching you react to one of the greatest songs from one of the greatest bands ever! I can see the enjoyment in you eyes! I have said it many times I would love to hang with you listening to classic rock. Nothing like some great stinky dank with the lights down low and Lynyrd Skynyrd playing loud
Remember this was LS debut album. Tuesday’s Gone, Simple Man, Gimme 3 Steps and Free Bird were on this album. Hard pressed to find any band with a better catalog of hits over five year span.
my wife dedicated this song to our son the night before his 18th bday. he was killed the next day on his bday by a drunk driver. this song makes me cry everytime i hear it. so, thanks for the tears my man
Always hits home with me. People hearing it for the first time come away with a newfound appreciation and understanding of the Song, The Band and The Life Concept it Speaks Of, especially coming from your Mom. To Start try The Ballad Of Curtis Loew, Tuesday’s Gone, That Smell, The Needle And The Spoon.
You need "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew" for the story. You need "That Smell" fornthe message. You need "I Know A Little" just because it is a slappin' high-octane blues boogie.
Skynyrd always ended their concerts with Freebird his voice was strained. This song Simple man was written by Ronnie after a conversation that he had and Gary had with their grandmothers .
Hey Biz, it's so good to listen to Skynyrd with someone who genuinely seems to enjoy their music and messages as much as I do. A few suggestions for ya if I may, are Cry For The Bad man, Mr. Banker, One More Time, I Need You and Four Walls of Raiford. Thank you for your enjoyment of my favorite band when I was coming up and you're running an awesome channel, Biz!
When it comes to love, the song is saying that love comes when you, yourself become someone you love and understand. It’s a byproduct of focusing on what matters in life.
Yeah, this is a good one ... very nice review 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Thank you!!! This one gets to me 😔😢 Anyhow, there are many great Skynyrd songs fr ... The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Gimme Three Steps, Tuesday’s Gone ... and many many more!!!! Probably their 2nd most popular (after Freebird) is Sweet Home Alabama ... they were just a good solid southern rock band!!! Take care & stay safe fam 💞
I truly appreciate your passion for the music! I think your channel is gonna grow fast. As this song states, Follow your heart and nothin else. Fantastic reaction to a fantastic song! Peace
My son, who turned 28 two days ago, will tell anyone that this is his Mommas song to him bc I have been playing it for him since he was still in my belly. I would place my headphones on my stomach for him to hear it. These lessons are what children need to hear from their parents bc they do listen and hear what we tell them. He goes to this when hard come as they do in life just remind himself of the lessons and that he has me in his corner always. Tyler Lee Momma loves you, baby and im your biggest fan walking this earth till I am from beyond ❤❤❤
This is my second time watching your reaction. Had to subscribe because you said something I believe for people that react to songs. Listen to the studio versions without video and simply (pun intended) react to the music.
He spits truths. This is a much revered song. Lots of people do great covers. Nobody tries to cover Freebird, however, would be sacrilege. Some things best left alone.
I love that you read the comments and LISTEN to your sub family here. "Simple Man" is a staple Lynyrd Skynard song to hear. I'm grateful you listened to this!! ❤🎵 "Sweet Home Alabama" is one of their stadium anthem songs.
I've been up as well as down and the middle too which is a nice spot.Part of my prayers contain often "Father thank you for providing for this house such that we not only have everything need but also most of what we want".
I spoke too soon. She's trying to tell him to be humble. Not to be out there, boastful. And the fact there is someone still up above and watching. And you've gotta love that there's nothing better. I cry when I hear this too. I've got many years of memories of music and I hear It. And then the flashbacks come in and what can you do but cry
I would always recommend listening to studio for audio evaluation, for the most part, live should be added in later for the visual. In most cases the live distorts the audio.
Ronnie and Gary wrote this song in about one hour. After both there moms passed they were telling stories about them and that’s how the song was wrote!!!! Fantastic really isn’t it!!!
I'm thinking you listened to the live version of the cover band, I cant find a video of the original band playing this, Skynyrd was one of the few bands that were as good live as they were in the studio, thanks for the reaction brother
This song touches everybody who first listens to it. That is why Skynyrd is better than most. They wrote songs that everybody can relate to.
Yeah bro. Straight up😁
They were an AWESOME GROUP! Big fans 4 EVER!
*better than all
I’ve heard this song a while back. It just captures your attention. Beautiful lyrics and music,
Well said man
Forget your lust for the rich man's gold. All that you need is in your soul...

ITS AMAZING HOW A SONG FROM 1973 CAN REACH SO MANY PEOPLE AND TOUCH THEIR HEARTS.
Because the message is timeless

I absolutely agree. Was just talking to a friend about that a few nights ago after Gary Rossington sadly died (last remaining original member.)
You hit the nail on the head when you said "...real man...". This is a beautiful simple song, excellently executed.
This song will be played as my ashes are scattered. I always connected with this song because I'm just a Simple Man. I never needed money or fame to enjoy life. I find pleasure in the simple things.

A few suggestions for ya if I may, are Cry For The Bad man, Mr. Banker, One More Time, I Need You and Four Walls of Raiford. Thank you for your enjoyment of my favorite band when I was coming up and you're running an awesome channel, Biz!
His vocal are outstanding on their live album "One More From the Road"
This song always gives me chills. ADD: "That Smell" great message about a band member.
I've been fortunate to see them live 3 times over the years (with Johnny, RIP Ronnie) and they're fantastic live.
When you saw Freebird Live, that was the last song of an entire set on stage. The fact that they played as well as they did was impressive.
When it comes to love, the song is saying that love comes when you, yourself become someone you love and understand. It’s a byproduct of focusing on what matters in life.
"Tuesdays Gone" "Sweet Home Alabama" "Call Me The Breeze Live at Knebworth '76" All BadAss
As far as vocals, remember, this was loooooong before auto tune.
You'll like Bad Company. Paul Rogers won't disappoint.
Definitely. Great era. Some epic songs from them. Feel like making love. Shooting star.
Yeah, this is a good one ... very nice review 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Thank you!!! This one gets to me 😔😢
Anyhow, there are many great Skynyrd songs fr ...
Peace
My son is gone. My brother is gone. Both recently. I love this song and they did too.
A great reaction & understanding of what I believe to be one of the wisest songs ever made.
Much love from here in the UK
My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Hands down. There's so much more to them than just Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama.
Thank you !!!! I love Skynyrd but those songs have been played to death. So much more incredible music that they have.
Of course you should do more Skynyrd!!!👍✌😎
This song is my # 2 from their songs, beautiful. It makes me proud to be the mother of a great son, thanks Biz.
This song hits everyone!!!!! Everyone has a mama, and everyone’s mama has given them this advice in one form or another
Great reaction Biz...one of the greatest message songs of all. Beautiful and True.
Gimmir three steps is a lot of fun
This is my second time watching your reaction. Had to subscribe because you said something I believe for people that react to songs. Listen to the studio versions without video and simply (pun intended) react to the music.
💯. Been preaching that for years now. Studio version first, then live or whatever version next.
It is a great song- one of my favorites! Just a mother imparting life wisdom to her son- that is all, Simple , yet POWERFUL- If he pays attention☺
Skynyrd has so many but some other life lesson goodies are " Needle and a Spoon", "Gimme Back My Bullets" and "That Smell". Enjoy.
And .38 Special and Gimme Three Steps. The latter for a different reason. Leave dem ladies alone😂
now you got to react to Tuesdays gone, really showed Ronnie's voice.😷🇨🇦
Definitely 👍👍
I’ve always told my son this song is the poem I would have written for him.
You got to the heart of it Biz. Your not phony and you now have a new subscriber. Don't give up on this. Also, Georgia here too.
I've been up as well as down and the middle too which is a nice spot.Part of my prayers contain often "Father thank you for providing for this house such that we not only have everything need but also most of what we want".
I’m happy you got to hear this song and you found Ronnie and his band. Amazing song indeed.
Great reaction, Thank you! Tuesday gone is a must!
Song, performance, lyrics, sound and production is so insanely good. 1973....Incredible 😋
Love your reaction to this great wonderful song. It’s one of my favorites of all time
👊😎💪 strong reaction. Love it.
Every young man NEEDS TO HEAR THIS.
keep on keepin on
I would always recommend listening to studio for audio evaluation, for the most part, live should be added in later for the visual. In most cases the live distorts the audio.
Ronnie and Gary wrote this song in about one hour. After both there moms passed they were telling stories about them and that’s how the song was wrote!!!! Fantastic really isn’t it!!!
Yes more please. " That Smell"
Great vocals and lyrics, yes. But you can still hear the power of Skynrd's guitars even on this studio version. Another real ly powerful song live.
Money follows and finds Passion, when your good and honest, it finds a way.
I'm thinking you listened to the live version of the cover band, I cant find a video of the original band playing this, Skynyrd was one of the few bands that were as good live as they were in the studio, thanks for the reaction brother
