Im about to change my outer boot but I only have the 6 point torx bit... should I purchase the 12 points before going on???
Would it be possible to give me the proper socket name in order to get the right one???
Thanks a lot for all you work, your involvement and your insights... super helpful for us, amateur mechanics :-)

actually, as I re-read your comment, you are saying that if I am taking them both off entirely to check for pitting and re-pack, I can leave them as-is, swap the boots, and reverse each one (so the inside CVs are now on the outsides).

I noticed you used the impact wrench to torque the bolts down. What is your psi set to on the impact wrench? I'm a home mechanic working on my 87 vanagon so I don't know these things :)

In the beginner.... many years ago, I used to use a torque wrench for these bolts. Over the years, I got to know the feel of my impact guns and their adjustment knobs. I believe shop pressure is 120psi.. this small 3/4" impact was set somewhere in the mid range of output (IIRC)... again, it's a feel thing (feel the impact torque against the bolt).

You can look up the torque settings in the Bentley manual. Thomas doesn’t explain the bevels on the joints and then there is the matter of clocking. This video is perfect for repacking and removal and installing. It is one of the easiest I’ve seen. If you are replacing the joints, I suggest searching for clocking of cv joints. Especially if your Vanagon is lifted.

Do you need to add any grease to either end prior to installing the half shaft or do you just rebolt. I have 2 complete half shafts to install and was wondering what to look for at either end, the video mentions to check the wheel bearing at the outer but since it is a bolt on I gather the grease goes to the next layer.

The half shafts should have grease on the outside (the flat area that faces whatever the joint is bolted to) of the joint as well... if that's what you meant.

Hi. What is the psi torque needed?

Your service manual should show 45 Nm / 33 ft lb
If you don't have one... you can buy one here:
