    This was a fantastic video! My hubby has issues with his left arm/hand after a stroke when he was 23. Married for nearly 13 years and I am starting to teach myself handy things. If the lightbulb is off, the power is off. Just make sure you turn the power off at the breaker, not the switch as the gentleman said. If you don't know what breaker to turn off, then get a helper to tell you when the bulb goes out. Otherwise, you will be running back and forth until you hit the right breaker. That's a real joy! :) Also for an added measure of safety, you can electrical tape the wire nuts of the black and white wires that go to the fixture. Good Vid. Have fun Blessings!

      Hi! I have a problem in that the old fixture isn't working at all. Changed bulbs and everything. So the wiring In the fixture isn't working, and I'll never find out for certain which breaker turns off the power. Do you have any suggestions? Would appreciate very much!

      @@PouchMasterMy suggestion is to hire a knowledgeable adult, like an electrician, or...
      someone with an adult attitude, that's not afraid to handle simple home repair.
      Changing an old fixture is EASY for anyone who is NOT afraid to face a simple
      challenge. You don't sound like a "do it yourself" kind of guy. You're more like,
      "the sky is falling" kind of guy.
      Since you are convinced that you'll NEVER find out for certain which breaker it is...
      FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL. If you cry a little louder, perhaps you can find someone
      to fix your problem for free.

    I installed the exact same light, however the two screws going thru the fixture that you tighten down to secure it to the unit were two long and I could not tighten them down, so I had to go to hardware store and find two smaller screws that would do the job. Also the top of the fixture did not line up very well and I had to angle a screw into it to make it work. .

      It may be considered bad practice but turning off the light switch should do the trick. Just me and my girl here and I informed her and taped down the switch. That being said, its good to know your circuits and if they are not well labeled at the panel then this could be a good opportunity to fix that. It's not hard to do and will save you time in the future, perhaps even in an emergency event.

    • @PouchMaster
      @PouchMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@electricfuzzband Yeah I actually did wind up labeling them and locating the right one! Might as well! Better safe than to electrify yourself! If the current is strong enough you can't let go and then WHOO! You're going for a ride! And you might not get off of it! You're own body being used to compete the circuit! To get off of it, a friend or someone nearby has to hit you hard with a hard wooden (not metal) object like a bat or a 2x4 just to get you off that wire before you're totally electrifried! If they make physical contact with you, they will become part of the electrified chain completing the circuit, and then they're going for the ride with you! I've been doing some research since I made the post!

    what can you do if the wires coming into the box are too short.

    • @NightScreen
      @NightScreen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Heath you can buy new wire at like Menards or anywhere. You’ll have to figure out if it’s 16 gauge or 14 gauge or even if it’s 20 gauge. They sell a tool that looks like pliers, but you can close it and it has loops you can slide the wire through to figure out what gauge the wire is. Once you figure out what gauge the wire is, you can tie the new wire to the old wire and electrically tape them together. Menards does sell a small device you can attach both wires to and it closes them off together, no tape needed.
      I’m not an electrician, so take my advice with a grain of salt. If at any point you feel lost, hire/consult a licensed electrician.

    • @eigenbroetler321
      @eigenbroetler321 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wanted to clarify that your house wiring should only be 14 or 12 gauge, for 15 or 20 amp circuits, respectively. Wire in the light fixture can be smaller gauges than 14 but if your circuit coming from the house is 16 or 20, it is undersized and needs replaced.
      It sounds like your wiring coming into the box being too short means you cannot make a splice with them to extend, since light fixture's wires are usually pretty long, right? If so, replace the entire wire. In the US the National Electrical Code requires 2 inches of wire in the box for splices. I can't recommend trying to make a splice on anything shorter, even though it's possible and people tend to do it. If you abandon the short wiring and pull new wiring through, make sure you cap the abandoned wires in the light box and the other end (switch box). Otherwise, remove the wiring completely, which likely requires opening up your interior drywall/plaster/etc. and repatching.
      Good luck!

    Looks easy But then once you get the old light down something goes wrong. Can’t get the new light up. And your left with exposing wires hanging out for the next 6 months. Happens every time

      If it came to that, for an outside fixture, I would think you can cover it with a piece of aluminum foil (taped on with duct tape) so nothing gets wet. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about using aluminum foil.

      @@escapefromny2012 - If an exposed wire had to be left for awhile, I would simply cap it off with a wire connector and then wrap it with electrical tape and tuck it back behind the vinyl siding. Aluminum foil is metal and as such is still conducting electricity. whereas a plastic cap won't conduct.

      @@escapefromny2012 Definitely don't wrap it in aluminum foil, holy crap man!!! Also, they make a tape specific to electrical work, it's called electrical tape.

    what about the ground wire from the house, what did you do with that

    • @backyardmech
      @backyardmech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ground wire from the house was already fastened to the gang box - it didn't have to be moved. But it's hidden under the wire . When we connect the ground wire from the light, to the gang box (which is connected to the ground wire from the house ) , the circuit is grounded. Good observation Brad - I didn't realize the viewer couldn't see the ground wire to the house !

    Not gonna at least caulk that huh? Just going to push it up against the siding like that leaving those huge gaps?
    The problem here is that you end up with people who don't know what they are doing teaching others the wrong way to do things.
