Defeat and Gem & I are like a conversation about Animal Collective itself between Avey and Panda. In defeat Avey talks about how the band is sure to descend into defeat, their huge era of fame around MPP was a peak when they were coming of age. That's over and now the inevitable time has come. It takes being an AC fan through the eras to really feel how much MPP has impacted the band, included messing up Deakin's head since he wasn't on that album. Panda's reply in Gem & I are pretty clear to me, the holy sound was the MPP era, yeah it was good, but who cares we were given so many compliments back then but they were gone so quick, "there's nothing in it". We saw the sun of fame, the spotlight in the music world. Panda directly replies to Avey's reminiscent "Twist them off and pass them 'round" with, "Crack open another beer". As to say, come on what's stopping us from enjoying 'now' why can't we just have another beer and do what we have been doing? Maybe we're in the golden era right now?
really, Animal Collective albums' only consistent weakness is that the track orders really just need to be rearranged. you often have great songs that get overshadowed by heavy hitters because of this. Otherwise I was sooooo pleased with this album. it feels like hiking in the mountains and coming across strange wizards, spells, springs, temples, campfires, tribes, etc. But it also pulls you back into reality as it tackles great themes of the trials and revelations that come with growing old. I'm excited to see what they learn from this album and how it'll inspire them going forward. but knowing AnCo the next album could also just be wildly different lol
Hey, Love your content and your album selections! I'm not a huge Animal Collective fan (I've heard 1 song a month ago), but this video inspires me to go check them out! I hope you don't mind suggestions, but you seem like you'd enjoy Lincoln by They Might Be Giants, if you haven't heard it already. It's one of my personal favorite albums. Also, one of my favorite things about listening to a lot of music is realizing exactly what bands are taken as influence. Like Soul Capturer reminds me a lot of Velvet Underground & Nico, and Broke Zodiac also reminds me of the aforementioned They Might Be Giants with the vocals! There actually seems to be quite a bit of They Might Be Giants influence on this album Love your content, keep up the great work!
Magicians from Baltimore, Defeat, and Royal and Desire from 'Skiffs were the three songs that got me through so many rough patches the last couple of years. When they performed those three songs at the Music Box Village in 2018, I had three songs that kept me company through a lot of dark days and sleepless nights. When I heard Cherokee (a top favorite song of mine from them) as they road-tested these two albums, I was so happy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insight about Animal Collective, they've got me through a lot of unhappiness. ❤❤
The reason why it sounds similar to time sciffs is cos they were written/recorded in and around then same time. They had lots of songs banked because of covid!
This is the first time I've gotten to experience the first listen to a new animal collective album along with you- I haven't listened to this one yet. Was absolutely enjoyable. Every moment where I caught myself smiling/dancing/vibing you were gearing up to talk about how great that part was. And I agree- def more reminiscent of old AC, with more of a 60s feel to it than previous albums. I'm stoked that this one seems to have some solid emotional pieces- that's something I feel I've been missing from more recent albums. Im going to try to get through it all myself tomorrow! Excellent reaction, as usual 🖤
17:20 I had that same reaction when I first hear them play this live back in April 2022. Apparently Defeat had existed for a few years, just never officially released and only played live. Was such a trip
Have you heard of the Olivia Tremor Control? very psychedelic and sounds like its straight out of the 60's theyre OG's of the Elephant 6 (think Neutral Milk Hotel) if you need further convincing
I seriously think Defeat is in contention for the top AnCo songs ever. The SFX design and sound engineering sounds like the culmination of everything and the structure and performance feels so profound and wise beyond their experiences.

I don't usually like 'piano ballads', but Stride Rite was my favorite. love Deakin's voice and lyrics. Such a sincere, emotional song
Why do you talk like that
if you love long emersive songs like Defeat, you HAVE to try out Eucalyptus by Avey

Thank you! It's always a pleasure to see your reviews of Animal Collective. I'm a fan of them and you do everything very respectfully and nicely. 😍
Was hoping you'd go for this one. I love the trajectory AC is on these days.

Agree with the track order. Would’ve loved to see this as a double LP with Time Skiffs and seen all 18 songs blended together. 🍻

You need to check out Deakin's solo album "Sleep Cycle" such an incredible album especially if you like his stuff here

Definitely listen to Sleep Cycle by Deakin, one of the better anco solo albums
Good era for the band, but i miss the wilder, more experimental works like Centipede Hz, Painting with, and Tangerine Reef
tangerine reef and centipede are so underrated its insane
Bro listen to it after a few beers, or umm greens. 😅
