  • Syntax is the study of the structural rules that govern the way we form sentences out of individual words.
It's a really interesting subfield of linguistics, and it has a lot to teach language learners about the structure of sentences in their target language.

Welcome! I am a Linguistics major and an aspiring polyglot. I speak English and Spanish, and I am currently learning French and Esperanto. I make videos twice a week to talk about my methods of learning languages and to try to help others make language learning faster, easier, and more fun.

I shared this series with my sister. She is an aspiring polyglot like me (we are both native Spanish speakers, dad is American, so we were basically born bilingual). Our current focus is on Indo-European and Mezzo-American languages, but I do have a Nigerian friend who is teaching me Yoruba.

Great job. I do hope you will make a video how the way we say something influence the meaning. The role of "pauses" The fact that : "I, my cousin Peter and his wife went to the restaurant yesterday." doesn't mean the same thing that : "I, my cousin,Peter and his wife.went to the restaurant yesterday." First sentence three people I,Peter, and his wife.Second sentence four people I, my cousin, Peter and his wife.

Interestingly, someone with the same cultural background as Fingtam would probably be able to parse the sentence "Shot Han talking someone Greedo were first and while" fairly easily, while someone fluent in English but had never seen Star Wars would probably only understand the two syntactically correct versions of the sentence on the most superficial level.

LINGUISTICS should be concerned only with the study of langue because the study of parole requires the attention to other sciences such as psychology, physics or physiology. Even syntax is outside the domain of linguistics since a langue is a system of signs, and does not specify how those signs are combined in actual speech. Syntax would rather belong to parole, not to langue.
