Years after this was posted, it's still helping crocheters - how's that for legacy? I'm a beginner and thought this foundation chain might work better for my first ever blanket I'm trying to make. Yesterday I learned how to make a rectangle center, and now I learned how to make it better with foundation half double. Thank you so much for keeping it clear and simple :)

I have been crocheting since I was 5 years old and never heard of a foundation half double. I am now 62; just goes to show you should never stop learning! I've always disliked starting my work with a chain! Thank you for this awesome video and for helping me to keep on learning!

I love how you literally point at the different loops on the hook to show which loop becomes the "chain" and which loops become the "stitch".

I have a pattern for a lovely light crocheted short cardigan that will look great over a dress, but it is entirely made of half doubles. (It doesn't help that the yarn is black.)This stitch has confounded me so much that I put the whole thing away. Your video has made this much clearer for me now. My mom taught me to crochet decades ago, but I never really did anything with it. I'd go on a kick every so often, buy a ball of yarn, and TRY to make a scarf...and lose interest when I was 30% done. I can't begin to tell you how many times I donated balls of yarn to the local thrift store! My biggest problem was the chain...my tension was all messed up. My chain was always tight AF, but my 'work' would be nice and loose; as a result, everything I made was lopsided even if the stitches added up.
Well, this winter I went on another kick...but this time, I made about EIGHT scarves, start to finish! I stumbled across the "chainless" method a couple of weeks ago, and I can't begin to tell you the change it's made in my crochet skill levels! I just finished a receiving blanket (my largest project ever!) that I started with a chainless double crochet foundation, and now I'm in the planning stages of my next project. I'm going to make myself a crochet ruana (possibly with added sleeves)...and I'm going to use the chainless method on all three panels.
The instructors I've found here, including Tamara, have made their instructions so easy to follow along with. Just two days ago, someone saw me crocheting and commented that they'd always wanted to try but figured it was too hard. I immediately recommended youtube to her, and specifically mentioned Tamara (as well as a couple of others!) as great teachers.

Ok now I’ve got it. My problem was locating the « bottom « of the stitch. I had it opposing.. I thought the bottom of stitch was the top loops of stitch.
I guess I needed refresher of crochet vocabulary. Maybe add a stitch closeup to help verify insertion.
Also this video popped up under lefty foundation half double rochet, not right handed.
Explanation is crystal clear once I got the right (bottom)! Thanks
