      Close.
      Tarzan's chimp in the books was actually named was "Electric Cheetoh," but they changed it for the movies.
      But other than that, you are right, Tarzan had a pet chimp with the powers of electricity, that he often used to hurl lightning bolts at Nazis. He even saved Superman once by changing the polarity of the earth's electric field to reverse the effects of Kryptonite.
      R.I.P., Electric Cheetoh😢

    So a note about the uniform:
    Performing monkeys in outfits were a thing well before the 20th century. One of the common styles of monkey costume was a knockoff of popular military uniforms of the 19th century--shiny buttons, gold braid, useless hat, etc. This style was very popular for certain service and performing professions; marching bands still use it today, of course, probably as an offshoot of military bands. The staff at hotels and movie houses often wore similar uniforms, so if you look up, say, an usher's uniform, you'll find someone who looks like a bellhop, and they BOTH look like a doorman at a fancy New York building or someone playing trombone at halftime. The idea was to make these workers look anonymous but impressive to the public.
    So it wasn’t that monkeys were dressed like bellhops, it was that monkeys, bellhops, ushers, and doormen all dressed like they were about to play John Philip Sousa.

      Granted, that was a common cartoon trope in the 90s (inspired by old Tex Avery cartoons, and such from the 60s) where a character's eyes would stretch/bulge outward to show shock/surprise, or being scared. Also happens in the intro to Wario Land for Gameboy, so it's not just a DK trope.
      And oddly DK doesn't do it in the Retro Studios era DK games, though Smash Brothers brought it back in the K.Rool reveal trailer.

    My little brother had one of these monkeys in the 1970s. My brother loved monkeys, so all the relatives would give him monkey toys as gifts. Well, that wind-up cymbal-clanking monkey was just freaky. My brother was scared of it - with good reason. It would randomly start hitting those cymbals together, usually when it was in the closet. You’d be in his room and you’d hear CLANK-CLANK-CLANK coming from behind the closet door.
    Mind you, this was years before the Stephen King story came out. I remember getting chills the first time I read that story, because I already had creepy memories of that awful little toy. My brother became so freaked out by it that he smashed it and threw it away at some point. I suppose it would have been hilarious to buy a new one and put it in his closet for him to find, but I wasn’t going to waste my meager allowance on a prank.

    • @solinus7131

    • @DaveTexas
      @DaveTexas 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @ nothing is "haunted," so that wasn’t it. It was a wind-up toy, so faulty or rusty gears could have caused it to stop moving before all the tension in the spring had been released. Then a while later the tension in the spring could have overcome the friction in the gears, causing it to start moving again for a few more seconds. Being cheaply made, those things never operated smoothly and perfectly every time you wound them up.

      @@ChargerBulletThese monkeys were used as a sort of screamer for a commercial in the 70s and used for horror movies and books in the 80s meaning atleast adults at the time already found them unsetling in the first place, not really what I would call creepy “to the younger generation” unless you are 200 hundred years old and the baby boomers who made those commercials, movies and books seem young to you.

    Great deep dive into the concept!
    Trying to figure out who designed stuff at Bandai even relatively recently is rough, I can't imagine stretching that far back. The only way to dive in further here would be someone with legal/lawyer-level Japanese diving into old records in Tokyo or asking Bandai for help, and that's maybe a bridge too far for a lot of folks.
    It's kind of amazing how much more popular he is outside of Japan though. I've never really seen this monkey in Japanese media, despite its very specific incarnation being a Japanese design. Just one of the many wonders of Japan's role as the world's toy manufacturer for many years.

    I used to do “table hopping” which is going table to table in a restaurant and offering a close up magic show. for a while I worked at a pizza place that was called The Organ Grinder that had a ginormous pipe organ. there was a special platform for one of those cymbal monkeys to the side of the console and every now and then one of the gift shop gals would bring out the monkey and set it on its little platform. the organist would play to the rhythm of the cymbals for a bit and then pretend it had gone off time, so he’d smack it in the head with a plastic baseball bat, the monkey would do its screaming bit and after a pause start slapping out the rhythm again. one night I asked the gift shop gal if I could carry him out. she said sure and I got a huge giggle out of doing the honors. all this was nearly 50 years ago and I still have fond memories.
