I feel you haha I been painting on my IPhone for good minute now I’m tired of getting those nasty hand cramps 😂 finally made the move to get myself an ipad!
Small tips: one, definitely get a pencil grip, because they're the same size as normal pencils it's pretty easy to find one that works for you. Next up! there's customization that allows you to disable the tap to eraser thing. (which can be a lot.) For the pencil visibility, I would turn on the brush curser. And just a heads up for the matte protector, if the grain is too deep it can actually damage the tip of you pencil, so just keep an eye out for that. So glad you like procreate!
Do you know if all matte screen protectors damage the tip? As in, would you say it's better without one? I'm getting my iPad today and don't want to get a matte one, only to damage my Apple Pencil the first thing I do.. 😅 Thank you so much for all the tips!
@@tillyk3721 every matte screen protector wears down the apple pencil tip more quick that normal screen protectors, but it is not a big deal every tip wears down, apple sells apple pencil tips and those are not expensive, it is better to choose a matte screen protector for drawing.
Another thing I like about procreate is that it's more user friendly, it's not overly complicated, yet it's almost everything that photoshop tries to be
The biggest pro argument that made me buy an iPad instead of a drawing tablet was the fact that I can draw everywhere and am not bound to draw at a desk all the time, which for me is great and I keep drawing in bed all the time. The 2021 iPad pro also has a thicker screen than the older ones because of the new XDR-Display, that’s probably why with a screen protector drawing gets a bit more wobbly. It shouldn’t happen with the 2020 and 2018 ipad pros.
It should also be mentioned that procreate supports animation as well! It’s fairly basic but it’s very intuitive and you’re able to draw with all the same tools which is great. I struggle to find any ways where it’s noticeably inferior to photoshop, but in the end it costing $10 blows photoshop’s overpriced ass out of the water
How to fix those wonky lines: Tap on the brush you’re going to use to open up it’s settings, then edit the steamline. This will determine how smooth and strait your stroke will be.✍️
Here's a tip that I just learned for my iPad. You can connect a monitor via the usb-c port and this will allow you to work zoomed in on the tablet while seeing the whole project evolve on the monitor. Enjoy the new iPad!
Tap with 4 fingers to make the interface disappear and reappear and pinch and let go quickly with two fingers to make the canvas fill the screen the best that it can😎
With procreate on the iPad you can adjust the streamline of the brushes which will help with line smoothness especially if you use a tempered glass protector, you do it by opening the brush settings, I use it with having tremors and it helps me put out the art I wanna create!
that ipad is freaking huge, mine is the 10inch one so i can’t imagine having almost 3 extra inches to work on i would get lost in my own screen haha. 3 fingers swipe down gives you a quick little copy and paste menu, 4 finger tap puts you almost in preview mode? it takes away the toolbars. i definitely figured these both out accidentally xD

I thought my screen protector was causing a wobble too, but found it’s most likely an issue with the iPad’s digitizer, since it’s a lower resolution than the screen itself. It usually only causes the wobble when drawing slower and diagonally. But hey, if a matte protector helped you out that’s great! (And maybe I’ll try it too)

Agreed the base brushes are the best of any included-with-software, but for real, Sam, PLEASE try Max Ulichney's brushes sometime. It's not that you NEED other brushes to make good stuff, but his are SO finely tuned and feel so good to use. I'm sensitive to the feeling of abstraction/separation with digital tools and his brushes are my fav. for feeling almost like real media with no mental separation between my intention and the result. Really glad you're enjoying procreate! Thanks for the video!
I’ve found my self drawing on procreate a lot, when I do something on my iPad anything at all I try to undo stuff with a 2 figure tap. I’m like “why isn’t it working!” “Oh..yeah this isn’t like procreate 🤦♀️”
I have used Photoshop since 2001 with Photoshop 6.5 and through my Multimedia diploma, and just use in general. I use my Kids 10.2 iPad 7th gen with Procreate, and it it really excellent. I still need to wrap my head around gestures. Not having name tabs for functions. Its an excellent App.
You can also use two fingers to tap/double tap , it undo’s mistakes you possibly made, and is a really useful gesture :). Also three fingers to redo things you accidentally undo. Those are my tips for you!
If you want to make straight lines in Procreate draw the line, circle, square or triangle(as far as I know that’s it) and hold. It should make a straight line and while holding you can move it to different angles if you want. Another way to do it is using Drawing Assist. If you go to Actions(wrench) then to Canvas you’ll find it. Flip the switch and press Edit drawing guide under it. There you can make grids and do symmetry stuff. Hope this helps someone! 😊
The problem with some matte screen protectors is that they can dull out the screen quality and color which could be a downside. I'd recommend a plastic screen protector even though it's not anti glare or has that paper feel texture but it really depends on what you prefer more.
For people who use tempered glass and are wanting more stable lines, you may try adjusting the stabilization amount of your brush in the settings. It helps draw really straight, smooth lines…
I haven’t seen any people do this but in the procreate gallery of your drawings if you zoom into one it basically creates a slideshow that you can scroll through.
sam, get ready to do the two finger tap when you mess up on paper and then realizing what you did when it doesn’t work. i do that all the time and the disappointment on my face is just something else
Been working with Procreate on my 2018 iPad 6th Gen since May 2018. Glad I started with Procreate, since I had no prior experience. I also upgraded to the new M1 12.9 iPad Pro and I'm loving it! Great video I can only agree on your points!
Perhaps someone commented this already but I would suggest using a rubber grip for your apple pencil; you know the ones you use on ordinary pens. It really helps!
I originally ordered mine for a manga class at USC (Columbia), and since then I’ve been using it for studying and commissions. It’s funny because people would tell me they wanted exactly what I had (same specs as yours with Procreate), and was just like, man I just got this because it was convenient. I can’t draw with a mouse to save my life and the university Wacom office is closed when I get off work. Currently, I use GoodNotes to study anatomy and I just draw diagrams in my notes.
If you tap four fingers on the screen, it gets rid of the menu giving you more drawing space. Although I don’t personally use this because it’s nice to have the menu up for convenience, you could give it a try if space is something your struggling with.
Before Procreate I used to work on clip studio paint for desktop. I watched a couple of tutorials before trying the app, and I was shocked at how easy everything is. All the features I need are 3 clicks away tops, and it's super easy to set up and change.
Make sure you turn off iPad’s True Tone. That feature uses iPads sensors to tint the screen with orange and blues (as well as brightness/darkness), but Procreate (and any other creative app) registers the actual color being used. This is similar to doing a color painting with tinted glasses. As a result, if you try to print your finished painting or send it over to a different device like your desktop (which does not use True Tone in most cases), your art will either seem more orange/blue or darker/lighter than what you see on your iPad.
ah sam nice that you like procreate so much and i definitely agree !! you can actually turn off the double tap feature or like change it if you want to! also you can choose in the procreate settings to show the brush cursor to get rid of the "not sharpened pen" feeling :) hope this helps!
My biggest tip is to disable drawing with fingers. There're many other QoL features in the options. I'd suggest setting them up to your liking. I started using Procreate less than a month ago and I agree it is sooo smooth.
Regarding your straight line issue, be sure to look in to the gestures... its an amazing feature. Like when you draw a straight line.... once you are at the endpoint of the line... dont lift the pencil... hold it for a few seconds and the line will automatically straighten... afterwards before lifting you can move the pencil around to adjust the angle of the line or while you move it around press another finger on to the screen and this will cause the line to snap to different points depending on the angle you are moving your pencil toward. sounds a bit confusing but try it out... also this works with other shapes and curves.... draw a triangle or circle or square and see how the gesture feature will make them perfect lines or curves after you hold the pencil down. This feature is awesome.
The Paperlike screen protector is a good option as well :) As the name implies, it makes the surface feel more like paper. So your screen gets protected AND the normal screen isn‘t slippery like it is without a screen protector (or just any other screen protector)
btw you can make the interafce disapear completly if you tap with 4 fingers and you can also connect your wacom pencil to procreate if you wanna use it instead of the apple one- i think it was prefs> connect third-party stylus
I went from CS2 (it was free), to Photoshop subscription service, to CSP, and now to Procreate. I gotta say, I agree with the review. Procreate has been my best digital art experience so far. Would recommend to anyone.
I think the same. I star drawing in Photoshop, but when I buy and IPad Pro and star working in Procreate is difficult comeback to Photoshop. Thanks a lot for your words and review
Great video! Also got the new iPad Pro and it's wonderful. As for the Apple Pencil and the issue you're mentioning, there is a rubber grip called NimbleGrip that works perfectly for someone who's used to a thicker pen
Don’t use any glass or full protector, i did also at start, but the mat protector will lower the resolution and change a bit colors. I removed all of that and got used to default iPad very quick. I use it professionally as a concept artist every day, never got back to my 27 cintiq since.
I find the pure sketching experience with the notes app the best among any device existing , it replicates real drawing with a 2b or HB pencil so well, Procreate is great though and this is what I use daily
Both procreate and photoshop are amazing. Both can make amazing things. However I find that photoshop allows more modular design. Adding personal brushes and having many more effects and options. There are some things that procreate has that photoshop doesn’t. Like the glitch filter. I use that a lot. However when I use prorate on the go instead of photoshop, I find myself wanting to use photoshop tools. I get that sams art style is much more like traditional art while personally I use a lot of effects and don’t actually use brushes to draw. I use the lasso tool fill and glows. Generally tho procreate is fine and works well for 90% of creators. Truly amazing tho they can run everything from an iPad Ps ik procreate has glow fill and lasso but to my knowledge their glow is just bloom and lasso isn’t polygon lasso which is what I use. I was also just making a point that I use slightly different tools than normal creators
UPDATE: matte screen protector came in, 10/10 chefs kiss
Matte protector has passed the sam vibe check

They actually sell rubber grips (sort of like pencil grips) that you can put on your Apple Pencil to make it easier to hold!
You can drag the color circle thingy at the top right down to color fill 😊
YOU WON. IT'S INSTALLING. I haven't been painting since so many years so I am VERY excited.
Omg U SAFE ME I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SCREEN PROTECTOR AND I THOUGHT IT WAS FROM THE SCREEN!
sam, get ready to do the two finger tap when you mess up on paper and then realizing what you did when it doesn’t work. i do that all the time and the disappointment on my face is just something else
Honestly I have not seen a need to purchase any third party brushes! The default ones are awesome!
Been working with Procreate on my 2018 iPad 6th Gen since May 2018. Glad I started with Procreate, since I had no prior experience. I also upgraded to the new M1 12.9 iPad Pro and I'm loving it! Great video I can only agree on your points!
If you haven’t bought it already, you GOTTA try the Paperlike screen protector! It’s so much more satisfying than drawing on a glossy screen!
I'll try tysm
I recommend buying a grip if the pencil still feels small/slippery :)
Perhaps someone commented this already but I would suggest using a rubber grip for your apple pencil; you know the ones you use on ordinary pens. It really helps!
So happy you’re enjoying it! Have a great day,I love your videos! ♥️
he has a really soft tone , very soothing
The sliding might help with this pen tips, literally from company call Pen Tips! Its this silicone tip designed for ipad!
You make it look so effortless! Love your work.😊
I originally ordered mine for a manga class at USC (Columbia), and since then I’ve been using it for studying and commissions.
Congrats sam!!
Hope to see more arts from you using procreate.
It's great for getting away from your desk, sketching on the couch, coffee shop, park etc 👍
The Paperlike screen protector is a good option as well :) As the name implies, it makes the surface feel more like paper. So your screen gets protected AND the normal screen isn‘t slippery like it is without a screen protector (or just any other screen protector)
you are so fucking well spoken and chill! I think I might have to go down the rabbit hole and watch a ton more of your videos! great video!
btw you can make the interafce disapear completly if you tap with 4 fingers
and you can also connect your wacom pencil to procreate if you wanna use it instead of the apple one- i think it was prefs> connect third-party stylus
Excellent review! Especially the ease of use and the intuitive interface. I am a Procreate LOVER and really enjoyed you talking about it!
For a wiggly line you can just hold your pencil down once you've drawn the line you can also do that for other shapes.
I went from CS2 (it was free), to Photoshop subscription service, to CSP, and now to Procreate. I gotta say, I agree with the review. Procreate has been my best digital art experience so far. Would recommend to anyone.
Art Studio Pro is nice- especially if you are coming from Photoshop.
Procreate is pretty awesome. For pencil drawings, I like Sketchbook by Autodesk better. Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are cool tools too.
to have a smooth line turn on streamline mode on each of your brushes and it will automatically give you a smooth line :)
i cant tell how long i have been waiting for this Video.. Thanks Sam!
I think the same. I star drawing in Photoshop, but when I buy and IPad Pro and star working in Procreate is difficult comeback to Photoshop. Thanks a lot for your words and review
so happy you got the ipad ! I love drawing on procreate !
Great video! Also got the new iPad Pro and it's wonderful. As for the Apple Pencil and the issue you're mentioning, there is a rubber grip called NimbleGrip that works perfectly for someone who's used to a thicker pen
Procreate gang, let's goo. I rarely use custom brushes and just stuck with the default. Cool to see you trying it out!
I really enjoy your work. I try my hardest to paint like that. I hope you do more procreate pieces. Thanks for showing your skill.
Truly amazing tho they can run everything from an iPad
Ps ik procreate has glow fill and lasso but to my knowledge their glow is just bloom and lasso isn’t polygon lasso which is what I use. I was also just making a point that I use slightly different tools than normal creators
