The reason we didn't get rain in the base game was because they couldn't get it to stop raining indoors. Modders have already found the original weather effects and the files for a scrapped power outage scenario as well. As for the fire destroying the entire game, I don't know how true that is. Many of the people who worked on the game have come out and said that while there was a fire, it didn't destroy the entire game as they had multiple backups so I'm not sure what to believe on that front.
I can imagine they had loads of back ups it's a big game and was really hyped before its release! It probably just set the producers back and over the years the impact got exaggerated, sort of like Chinese whispers
I can't believe it's true. There wouldn't have been nearly enough time to remake everything in that time frame. People have no idea how game development works, they take time to make, if they lost everything the game would have been released a lot later on. It is simply a case of the game changing direction, as ALL games do....it is not unique to the Sims at all. It's like how they say they changed GTA 3 because of 9/11. No, they didn't. The game was finished by the time 9/11 happened, all they changed because of it was some textures and audio. Everything that was changed or removed was done so long before 9/11 happened, not because of it. It also had no more unusual development cycle than any other game. If the game did have to change because of 9/11, it would not have came out so close to the event, or even in the same year. We would have had it much further into the future.

Sorry but professional software engineers for a multi-billion dollar game development studio don't keep all of their source code on a single server or in a single room without redundancy... Let alone the fact that several developers probably had recent builds of the game stored on their own workstations. Even if the servers were destroyed in that room, they would barely have lost any progress. Do some research before you spread blatant lies. This is simply footage of an alpha prototype. Yeah I hate these myths. It shows a lack of understanding on how game development works. All games change their look and feel to some degree, every game, ever during development. My guess for why the hairs in the beta were removed is actually because the Sims 2 shipped with hair physics, which you don’t see in any early beta version of the game. You can tell the quality of the hairstyles had improved in terms of texture quality in addition to the hair physics upon release.
They already had the footage to study from (if that fire story is to be believed). They could have reconstructed the game similarly but its obvious they wanted to try out a different design and remove all those additional features like weather, etc. so that they could release them as expansion packs.

The Server room fire is a myth, what happened was that the Sims 2 dev team simply scrapped a lot of features as they didn't like what they made or was deemed overly complicated technically for little pay off (like having fancy graphics that most computers couldn't handle at the time on low or medium settings).

0:12 this is the urban legend lol but the truth is that the little fire there might have been didn't seriously damage anything. It's just that, as with any early 2000s video game, the developers were too ambitious and didn't quite know the exact limitations of the hardware they were working with. From what I've seen, the game originally had dynamic weather effects like storm & downpours, reflective floors, houses with 3+ stories, even cars were seen in some beta images... it was just too much. Hence, they decided to scrap all that stuff and focus on the essentials and even then--the base game offered more to players than any other sim game that came after. Most of the removed features were later re-introduced in expansions.
i think i have a simple theory on why so much was removed from the final build: imagine any of this running on a home windows XP computer. i have all of the sims 2 expansions and it can barely chug along on my windows 10. as expansion packs came out, people got newer computers/upgrades. "but it runs so smoothly on this computer" this computer belongs to EA/MAXIS, companies with money that needs computers to run smoothly. it makes sense that their computers can handle cars and weather and more advanced interactions, while my PC runs sims 4 at 2 FPS
Not just that, but many things were likely too buggy or long-term performance amd resource heavy even on high-end computers (i.e. lightning and reflections). Hairstyles are likely linked to hair movement, which wasn't in the build shown here. IIRC rain couldn't be contained just to outdoors (but modders fixed and restored it later for BG using leftover code in the game files)

One of the devs recently confirmed that there was in fact a server fire, but it didn’t affect any of the sims 2’s files, and that the developers just switched to another art style.

No way people actually believe that Maxis could lose game data like that. The team at work on the Sims 2 was amazingly talented. The reality is that their vision for the Sims 2 changed throughout development as more features were added to the game. The graphics are just as good if not better in the final release, and the reason people may think the graphics are more refined in this earlier version is because the video quality is poor. Additionally, the scaling is different making the rooms look larger. This is an optical illusion as the scaling is different between versions. This is the Sims 2, just a beta version.
Just a heads up, the huge fire destroying the servers is not confirmed. I speculate it's the servers probably overheating, leading to probably a very small fire that could easily be extinguished. Adding: there were also power outages, setting back the development even more. These setbacks may impact development while it already was a difficult game to develop. The project was just very ambitious and they needed to rationalize.

The Sims 2 Beta Library has a lot of mods for bringing back the look of the beta. They've got recreated beta hairs, old UI elements like Sims facing forward in their portraits, and ModTheSims2 has a bunch of Lost & Found goodies from the old footage like the Sims Vacation painting or the one of the silhouette near an abstract circle painting.
Everything happens for a reason, maybe it was meant to be this way. One thing that I love the most about the Sims 2 that has me going back year after year, is how goofy it is. It’s such a goofy game (more so than any of the other games in my opinion), yet at the same time, it feels so much more real. If the Sims2 had been how it was originally meant to be, it might not have been as amazing in all honesty, because it might not have been as goofy if it wasn’t so rushed. I also love all the heart that was put into the game. It has so much soul, so much character. So many hidden meanings. I can’t imagine it being any other way ♥️
It seems it had a zoom limit which makes the game look better since you don't get unflattering angles where sims and objects bleed or look silly. Although the beta was designed as a 3D game, the limits combined with the better lighting, sim postures made the game look better.
My daughter and I where just commenting on the Sims 2 trailer the other day. We where saying how much of what they put in it ... they really delivered. This was after some comments regarding true in advertising going about a new Sims 4 expansion pack vs what is really in it. By far we still feel a superior game in game play. Ahead of its time.

Any respectable company would have lots of source code back ups and asset back ups. Even a lot of inexperienced bedroom developers know to back up their stuff. It's just normal game development, I don't know why people want to believe the fire.
This first version of sims 2 looks allot like a less developed version of the sims 3 to me...and to me the the sims 2 that we got out of this and have today looks a bit I would say maybe “paper-crafted” at least with some of the hairs that the sims can have in the game, just my opinion tho. But I still love the sims 2 how it is! I would love to try this first version of the game!

If the Sims2 had been how it was originally meant to be, it might not have been as amazing in all honesty, because it might not have been as goofy if it wasn’t so rushed. I also love all the heart that was put into the game. It has so much soul, so much character. So many hidden meanings. I can’t imagine it being any other way ♥️

It’s been confirmed that the server fire was a big hoax by staff working on sims 2
It seems it had a zoom limit which makes the game look better since you don't get unflattering angles where sims and objects bleed or look silly. Although the beta was designed as a 3D game, the limits combined with the better lighting, sim postures made the game look better.
I want to download all bets content to sims 2 from this builds...
My daughter and I where just commenting on the Sims 2 trailer the other day. We where saying how much of what they put in it ... they really delivered. This was after some comments regarding true in advertising going about a new Sims 4 expansion pack vs what is really in it. By far we still feel a superior game in game play. Ahead of its time.

Now i see why TS2 had some lazy graphics. ie the bad CAS face templates and the pixely looking background lots. The demo gfx did look kinda better than the TS2 we know..

Any respectable company would have lots of source code back ups and asset back ups. Even a lot of inexperienced bedroom developers know to back up their stuff. It's just normal game development, I don't know why people want to believe the fire.

This first version of sims 2 looks allot like a less developed version of the sims 3 to me...and to me the the sims 2 that we got out of this and have today looks a bit I would say maybe “paper-crafted” at least with some of the hairs that the sims can have in the game, just my opinion tho. But I still love the sims 2 how it is!

The game would have had to come out much later if they lost it all in a fire. People don't understand game development, it was never lost to a fire. It just naturally changed as ideas and feelings did, along with technical and optimisation hurdles. Its game development was no more unique than any other game.

I've watched this video before but this might be the reason why the game can get so corrupt so easily, just by deleting lots etc.. Time constraints made them oversee coding issues. 🤔😉
