    My mechanic just carried out an alternator change doing exactly the same job as you guys. This was thanks to your video to prove it could be done. Thanks

      Awesome, glad he carried out in a quicker fashion for you. Big savings on the wallet.

    What people who say, drop the engine to make the work easier, seem to always forget: If you drop the engine, there are so many bolts, connections and bushings you lay hands on, which are all possible failure points. You have to do an alignment as well and when you do an engine drop, you do every possible work which will come in the future, meaning from a few gaskets and an alternator you quickly get to a 2000-5000€ materialwise job which saves you a lot of trouble in the long run. So if you only want to replace the tandem pump or alternator, leave the engine in the car.

      I agree with you. I pulled it later in when I built down pipes and did some other various services. As long as you have a 2 post lift most of the German stuff is simple to drop out the bottom as you are well aware I’m sure.

      @@LostCauseRanch Indeed, I was surprised when I realized that in 2 1/2 hours an engineshop dropped the engine out of my 4.2FSI Q7. Since I've seen that and that it took another engine shop 2 1/2 hours to hoist out the 305 out of our 87 GMC Sierra, I was rather relaxed buying a V10 Touareg.

    nice job,nice video, i wasnt sure that this job could be done whitout pulling out the engine,is the only clip on youtube for this kind of job, well done

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the general consensus from most seems that it is an engine out job. Not sure if you caught it in there but we also had the tandem pump out on the back side of the engine to replace the gasket at the same time.

      now thats the service and the mechanics that are missing all over the europe, only for the alternator in europe this replacement will cost arround 1500 usd just the labor, these cars will die right here in their own land just because they are overcharge for any engine job and yes, the tandem pump here is changed ONLY whit engine out, you should rewrite some vw technical books

      @@alicutz79 tandem could be changed with no engine down, you would need tools for that

    Nice job. These engines are a nightmare to work on. How did your oil leak go?
    Judging by the amount of oil on top of the engine, the alternator driveshaft seal was probably gone.
    Once you are into an engine this far, it really doesn't take much more to replace the alternator driveshaft seal. (Right behind the toothed gear to the coupler)
    Cheers! From a Touareg owner and an unwilling mechanic. (Me)

    I can recommend to change oil often and only use the highest quality oil. These engines do not like prolonged intervals even though VW said so

    So I have a 07 Touareg and my mechanic said there is oil in the coolant and said that it could be the oil cooler. He was gonna charge me almost $3k to change it out. Any suggestions ? 😅

    are the manifold the same as in the R5? As far as I know the V10 is basically just two R5‘s put together.

    wow!!! nice video. that look like it was a nightmare... btw why was it not starting? what was wrong?

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would not charge the batteries while running, so it would almost always have batteries without enough power to start it back up.

    • @qrs3658
      @qrs3658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      when you guys installed the jumper pack it wasn't starting. is it because the jump box was weak?

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@qrs3658 When this one sits for a bit it seems to kill batteries, so it either needs the batteries pulled and charged or one jump pack up front and one on the rear battery. I let it sit too much without running it so it's kind of my fault.

    i have a BMW 335d, which is surprisingly one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on. I'm up in the air between an X5d, which uses the same engine as the 335d but isn't as off-road capable as the Treg. I'm debating whether or not i want to deal with the maintenance nightmare of the Treg for the extra offroad ability or just get an X5d.

    You want if you want all those lights to go out it's got to be a high amp battery because the battery is low sets all those crazy sensors off on the dash I hate those towards even with the V8 Audi motor I've worked on them did Cam tensioners it's an absolute nightmare try doing a starter that's just as fun
