I like the offset crank races. Although, it probably quadruples the cost of machining it. This is quite different from the old American formula of , "more cubic inches = more horsepower".

Excelente motor.
Gears are more durable and reliable, especially in keeping very critical valve timing. Diesel engines aren't known for being gentle on parts, the gear drive to the cams is a really good idea. Valve timing changes from cam chain wear and stretch is becoming something engine builders are starting to worry about now, Cam timing has become very critical,I imagine seeing more gear drive cams eventually.
Thanks. I repair auto trans's for a living. Honda, Mitzy, Subaru, and now Toyota. I think manual 'boxes are prob more durable, given that I see many needle bearing failures in auto trans. In fact, that, and heat, are the main causes of failure. Luftwaffe lol. You know the timing belt was first used in Germany on the Glas car, in the '60s. I suspect Jerry didn't worry about OHC, so no need for chains or belts. Cheers.
I love the idea of a V10 TDI but the fuel economy is terrible, the engine is overly complex and the emissions are even worse: Plasma liners mean that engine block needs to be discarded if there is any damage to the cylinder walls. A traditional cast iron in aluminum design has been used without any issues for a long time. Damn thing has more gears in the front of the motor than an old time clock.
@@carlosreyes3620 reportedly this has been done for Honda engines that had FRM liners but the point of the plasma liners is to allow a smaller block size overall. The thin liners wouldn't allow for an iron liner with the same displacement engine. Your pistons would also get smaller.
What a nightmare. So many moving parts that can fail. Imagine blowing the engine. And or replacing a water pump or compressor. You would have to take half the engine apart. These engines are incredibly over engineered and complicated. It may be nice for the first 50,000 miles, but just wait until an engine component fails.

If, by chance a timing belt did come in contact with some harsh chemical, it could possibly swell. I suppose newer belts are HCN, but still; gears to an engine like gears to a watch. There are quiet gears. I imagine future cams will be driven with servo-motors, and receive a wireless signal from the CPS. An 'indestructible' timing belt with a 50 yr. warranty? Now that's perfect ! Perhaps all those gears is a joke ?
To Me the problem with timing belts and chains, although fine,is cost of replacement before 100K miles.I'd rather have gear driven cams and pay the initial cost than have to pay a lot down the road for a belt replacement. Emissions and performance have also become very critical, camshaft drift out of time through chain wear is something the manufacturers are now worried about. Chains and belts are fine and have been, but engines like this one will have a long term benefit of durability.

2 Valves per cylinder is good for torque and fuel economy. Like the 1.9tdi PD ARL, while more valves flow better for higher rpm output.
