Brian in seasons 1-3 was great. He was sarcastic, but logical, and served as the voice of reason to the family. He wasn't afraid to lay into the Griffins, but he still cared about them. It's what I loved about him. His banter with Stewie, the other smart character in the household? Also worked. What we have now (unfortunately), is the most pretentious, amoral, self righteous character, and nothing about his character these days suggests that he even cares for his family. He just thinks he's better than them, and has nothing to show for it. Quagmire was a joke character at the start of the show, but as time passed, he grew in depth. It does make sense that the two dislike each other so much though: they're both the same guy, but one is at least honest with himself.

A lot of Atheists actually ARE critical of other religions aside from the Abrahamic ones. It's just that where a person is born in and where they currently live is a major influence of the dominant religion of that area of the world.
So if you often hear an Atheist being critical of Christianity, that means that Christianity is the dominant religion of that part of the world. The same thing goes for every other faith that has precedent.

You know what makes this so much worse? Brian is supposed to be a self insert of Seth MacFarlane. Seth uses his normal voice for Brian and Brian has many of Seth's beliefs. So chances are, Brian, the character that is the embodiment of selfishness and perversion, is just Seth without a filter.
