I remember anticipating this fight. Gonzalez was undefeated, but had fought a lot of bums. He was arrogant and would just toy with opponents. I thought, if he fights that way vs. Bowe, he'll get killed. I was wondering if the best version of Gonzalez would show up and make it a real fight.
As it turned out, Gonzalez' toughness, size, natural skill, & confidence got him a little ways. But he just never adapted to the pro style. This was an azz-whipping by Bowe. Although, Riddick didn't look crisp, balanced & quick. A little sloppy.

Love Big George as a fighter but on HBO, his act wore thin pretty quickly. Merchant became agitated over the years working with him and his quirky insights. In the fight between De La Hoya and Trinidad before even a punch was thrown, Foreman said Tito was already intimidated by the presence of Oscar standing in front of him. Merchant countered curtly "Why?" George said something about De La Hoya's broad shoulders and Larry countered "So what?" In a later mega fight, as B. Hopkins slowly took Trinidad apart over 12 one sided rounds, George insisted it was all a plan to wear out Bernard's tired old legs. Every time Tito landed a punch, Big George shouted out "Here he comes...those old legs are gettin' tired!" Finally Merchant shouted him down saying "Why don't you want to give Hopkins the credit he deserves for putting on this fantastic display of dominance George?" After the KO in round 12, George meekly said "I'm lookin' for my words so I can eat 'em." Not too long after, Big George was replaced by Roy Jones who had fantastic insights and instincts for what was happening in the ring. In my opinion, he was the best commentator/expert HBO boxing ever had.

Yeah I remember how bad he was. He was so bad that at times it was pretty embarrassing to listen to. When I told my nephew to watch George, or listen to George on HBO, he couldn't it either. He thought it was bad, and funny, he told his friends about it, and they get together only to watch the HBO fights just to laugh at George. And yeah you could tell Larry Merchant, 2001 he was more than fed up with George's incompetence when calling fights.
Even Jim Lampley (The nicer, and the more tolerant of George Foreman's gibberish) as the years went by could be caught on camera in latter times rolling his eyes, when George would speak in circles. But again my nephew, and his friends would have a ball cracking up over the things he would say.
