  • After a shocking and unanticipated KO loss in the first clash, Lennox Lewis looked to get revenge in his rematch against Oliver McCall for the vacant WBC Heavyweight Championship on February 7, 1997.
The event, dubbed "Payback or Playback", would end up becoming an unsavoury memory in the minds of boxing fans and would lead to speculation surrounding the mental well-being of Lewis's opponent during the occasion...
Should someone have stopped this boxing match from going ahead?

McCall took round 1. Lennox took round 2 in a way in which frustrated McCall because not only was he having trouble landing anything, Lewis was doing a fantastic job of counterpunching McCall when his big swings were leaving large openings in his defense. Round 3 the frustration overwhelmed him. A likely chemical imbalance & his newfound spirituality put him into a mindset where he didn't want to fight anymore. I think the tears came from knowing he needed the money and knowing he was letting down his corner and the fans. The amazing thing is I don't think Lewis ever physically hurt him too badly. Had McCall been better mentally prepared, I think he could've employed a rope a dope type strategy that could've led to potential path to victory in the 9th or 10th round when Lewis might've tired and slowed down. But we'll never know.

Oliver McCall was 4 days out of rehab. He was made to take this fight even though he didn’t feel ready. I also think he was told to take a dive… but this is only my opinion, I have no information to prove it. It looks like he refused to take an actual “dive” because he had never been knocked down before, so he just did not fight back and let it be a TKO stoppage. This is how it appears to me. I wish Oliver and Lennox would do an interview to discuss this. But if the speculation is true, it would further send boxing into a tailspin. Lennox was a great boxer. No doubt about it. But Oliver is one of the most underrated boxers in the history of the sport. The man never touched the canvas!!

This fight started with Mike Tyson relinquishing the WBC belt to avoid the mandatory fight with Lewis (after paying Lewis 4M USD step aside money and beating Bruce Seldon). At that time, Lewis and McCall were no. 1 and 2 contenders respectively, so they had to fight for the vacant champ. It is not what the yanks try to make excuse when their boxer lost to Lewis like being forced to fight etc.

Here after Teddy Atlas brought this fight up when discussing the upcoming Haney vs Garcia fight and Ryan Garcia's seeming mental breakdown. Nobody seems to be stopping to check if he's okay just like nobody was checking on McCall prior to and during this fight. Poor man, dragged out of rehab after accumulating massive debts and was then told to throw the fight. Lewis connected with some very heavy hits, but Mccall walked right through them. Such a shame, the man was a very talented fighter, but just like his sparring opponent in Tyson, his lifestyle left him open to corruption. Not for nothing the way Lenox hit McCall with clean shots that did absolutely nothing to him. McCall would have definitely been the fighter to have Lewis number. He would have surely put the boom on him again

McCall had a granite chin, one of the best ever, so he couldn't knock him out but I don't think that this mental breakdown had any impact of the result, Lewis would still win. Lewis from this and first fight are two different things, that knock out in first fight was planned by Steward and perfectly executed by McCall.

That isn't true, McCall was a drug addict that suffered a mental breakdown during the Lewis rematch that was almost THREE years after their 1st fight in '94. Later, McCall was literally institutionalized for mental illness and deemed unfit to be in society after a slew of drug arrests, rehabs and odd behavior. McCall actually beat Holmes after Lewis and then lost his belt to Bruno.
McCall wasn't "told to lose" he was on drugs, lost his son to murder less than a year prior, and was mentally unfit to fight. He shouldn't have even been there.
