I originally had this game in 1992. It was one of the early SNES games. It took me months to beats. No internet, no tip book, just the instruction manual and playing through it.
I would only play this game with the debug menu code. Without invincibility I couldn't fathom how anyone could ever beat it. That last boss fight always seemed ridiculously hard. I now realize it was just a huge lack of patience mainly, as just grinding and leveling up will get you through it just fine. But I just didn't have that patience as a kid... lol
This was one of my mom's favorite games and she loved to play it for us when we were growing up, it's a shame that she never did get to finish it before she died a couple years back. To this day it's still one of my most favorite games and the SNES Port is still my favorite version to this day and my most preferred.
Ys III is an excellent game no matter the platform you play it on, but I'd be remiss to not mention that there are far better options out there than the SNES port.
I have to admit I watched the entire video, not skipping a second, which means the grinding. I must be really, REALLY tired, but with the timing of the music and Adol swinging his sword it kind of looks like he's rocking out to the music, and I found that amusing.
I briefly had a SNES back in the day that I think I got at a yard sale as it had only this game with it. I sold it shortly after at our own yard sale as I think I lost the power cable (or one of the cables). I still kick myself for that. Thankfully, i kept all my other consoles over the years, including my Atari 2600. Anyway, I remember playing this a little and enjoying it. However, it's been so long, and I played it so little, that I don't remember anything from this video. Still cool to be able to go back and see what I missed!
This version of Ys III was actually done by Advance Communication Company, the same guys who did the absolutely awful Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Circus Caper NES games.
And Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for the TurboGrafx-16. The sound and music was thus handled by Michiharu Hasuya, who also worked on two other NES titles: Rygar and Clash at Demonhead.
Thanks for putting the links of the other versions. I watched them to compare and the difference is obvious. Although i never played an Ys game. That’s gotta hurt for you.
Rented this so many times as a kid. Can't remember if I managed to beat it start to finish by myself as I often played other people's save files on the rental copy lol
I had this game in the 90s. l. When i saw this video on my feed , my first thought was "Thats the game where you grind xp in the first cave for an hour".
Such an amazing childhood game ive never beat it had tp get it on emulator on my pc and im currently in the cursed mine so far so good when i was a kid i played the game exactly like you do in this video crazy for real and this was when i was like 8 or years old im 35 now
I was fortunate enough to find the game cart and majority of the instruction booklet, it's missing the cover. I had a good time tonight playing this for the first time. I did have to look up your video because of the flame sword. Adol the Red, destroyer of birds and collector of XP 😂
Such a beautiful SNES game. The version of 16 bit Zelda2 that I wanted to play and beat so bad but way to hard for me even with ridiculous grinding lol definitely enjoy watching playthru however👍 Nicely done
anyone remember a game with very similar to this but u can buy magic spells after every level...there's a new inn, a new shop, new purchases after every level....
"When I was joining Falcom I didn't know I was to be involved with Ys III. I was only told they were in the process of developing a side-scrolling action game - the Ys title hadn't been added yet. The project was simply referred to as 'that side-scrolling action game' Link's Adventure on the NES inspired them to create the game. The main character wasn't important, so Adol was temporarily used, just for development. Later they decided, oh well, we'll just use this character, and to market the product the management decided to make it Ys III. They were originally thinking of coming up with Ys III separately. I was mainly responsible for creating the map for the story in Ys III, and also the graphics for enemies and boss monsters. Most of the story parts were undecided, so the designers came up with level layouts, which were later compiled into a story. In the maps were already parts decided for the story, so we designed it to accommodate those. For example I would be asked to shape the map to have an event happen at a specific point - I had the freedom to draw the map based on those story points - then when the map was finished someone would add events. Then we'd say we should extend the map, to give more emotion to it. Or we changed the map, or directed the scene so that when the stage starts, if the character moves a little a boss suddenly appears." -- Kouji Yokota, graphic artist
played this as a kid and didnt get far or beat it but I tried alot and thought it was super interesting cant believe I found it after googling the name or what i thought was close to it.
i always thought this game was INSANELY hard. I wouldn't even play it without the debug menu code (for invincibility, mainly - probably something like gold, too). Even then I was always in awe at how much damage I "took" while playing through it. That last boss seemed ridiculous. I was young, but I think it was just my inability to focus much (very hyperactive/adhd, lol).
i think i like Ys 1 & 2 far better, i might be biased. never liked side scrollers.. but at the same time the 1st 2 seemed to of had far more death to them. thanks for "newer" upload. really love to see the 1st 2 get a remake from ground up and this one, i think this by far can help this one.. far to short and not nuff to explore...
Yeah, it's very similar. The composer for Jim Power (Huelsbeck, I think) admitted that he was listening to this OST a lot at the time when he was composing JP. So yeah, intentional or not, it's pretty unmistakable. You might've also noticed that the item fanfare is straight out of Metroid?
im confused AF (just starting to watch BUT) when does this take place after the 2 angles leave him sadly? =( (from the end of YS:2 it was painfully sad for me..
It should, yes. The series doesn't take place in a strictly chronological order and Adol rarely revisits any locations (that he's aware of) so they're mostly meant to stand alone. Status quo is God for Adol, he will leave the girl of the game, and Dogi will forever be on the other side of that pesky wall.
Why does Adol have a sword to slay the wildcat in the opening cutscene, but does not have it when the gameplay starts? Also, you can purchase an Amulet with all your gold and then be deadlocked, having to start over.
Godly music, but damn this game is jank. Enemy AI is practically nonexistent and your biggest threat is just getting smothered by their bodies while attempting to get close enough to attack. You resort to grinding and beefing your equipment rather than utilizing strategy and your reflexes. Dat OST tho....
another over priced poop biskit game, i remember buying this theres not even a sound when you hit the enemy and when you get an item its like you hear that music like its some major thing you sit there its hilarious .
@@HappyMealBieber Oh yeah, especially when the RPG and adventure games generally carried a premium price tag. Bigger ouch: I just looked it up - adjusted for inflation, spending $65 on a game in 1992 would be equivalent to spending $120 on it in today's money.

I gave this game a try. Sorry. It isnt a hidden gem, it is shit tier. Horrible hit detection, tedious grinding. Very bland and boring world. Bad music. Bad level design. Bad bosses. Faxanadu (fair comparison) on the NES at least had good music, a magic system and atmosphere. Didnt required you to switch ring 20 times during a fight.

The SNES port is the most affordable version, far cheaper than the other versions out there.
just saw that game the very 1st time. looks pretty cool.
its like faxanadu imho.

One of my favorites on the SNES. Music was on point, always fit the area.
My Introduction to the Ys series. Very fun, made me find the PC Engine version of Ys book 1 and 2.

The music in this game is insane (as in fantastic).

You oughta play Ys Origin for PC, it's the best Ys game in my opinion, with the best music.
I played it and I liked it. I just for whatever reason didn't like the games quite as much once they shifted to 3D.
so nostalgic

Dude you should play Treasure of the Rudras on SNES next. That game is so underrated and deserves more attention!
Its Roy
I have the remake The Oath in Felghana. It is a great story
Oath is so good. It turned Ys 3 from the absolute worst to one of the best in the franchise.
For the grinding segments, you should use the captions thing to jokingly say "Are we having fun yet?"
