How to Care for the Chest Pain Patient in the ER | Emergency Nursing

- In this video, we approach chest pain from the ER nurse perspective. We see what actions the ER nurse can take to care for and help treat the chest pain patient. We see what a myocardial infarction is, what symptoms someone might have, how to assess the MI patient, and much more. We will see that chest pain is a time sensitive diagnosis, and what diagnostic actions the nurse can take.
Nursing interventions include getting an EKG within 10 minutes of arrival, placing the patient on the cardiac monitor, starting an IV, and following the acronym MONA.
We will briefly talk about the treatment differences between a STEMI and an NSTEMI, with a further breakdown coming in a later video.

Just remember to check the blood pressure before even the first dose of Nitro! It can’t be given with pressure below 100 systolic. The patient might crash!!

I went to er with ahort breath, burning chest pain, tightness, mobility affected. Triage took bp said very high. Sent me to waiting room 10 hrs later i was not seen and 8 patients went in ahead of me. I left i was terribly tired and innpain i barely made it home. So they dont teach that gere im still sick waiting 3 wks for sr appt.

ER room chest pain is what I had. But all test shown negative for heart attack and I was released still with chest pain and no diagnosis for what the cause was. Was I to get a explanation from ER room doctor???
I had the same thing and was told it was a panic attack. Never had one like that, they gave me a sedative and I was able to walk out. Frightening otherwise! If you dont have your records you can contact the hospital for a copy of your records and test results.

Thanks for the question. That could be a sign of poor perfusion (circulation) to your body. In terms of heart attack, when we someone turn gray it could mean their heart isn’t pumping well enough to circulate blood.
