I never had any idea that I've been playing the German grip for so many years. I started out as a traditional grip player as a pipe band snare drummer and then went to play a drum-kit, the traditional grip seemed a bit "un-natural", then I saw Rick Allen (before he lost his left arm) play in this style and re-learned all of the rudiments and it became so easy to do. I think the best thing any drummer can do, is find what works for them. The best grip, is the one you find easiest for you to play, consistently, all the time, drumming is about comfort and not getting injured by poor technique.
There is also the version that Steve Smith used with Journey back in 1981 that Rick Dior calls the squirrel grip variation of matched grip. The palms are facing slightly upwards pulling the sound out of the drum, Rick says it is a no-no but it worked extremely well for Steve Smith. I like Simon Phillips version as well. But if you want to look cool, then using German grip is good because of the slightly more exaggerated wrist turns. Yes, I know I am weird for caring how it looks also lol.
This takes me back to when I started playing. I spent a ton of time trying to figure out the best grip for me. Came to the same conclusion. As I moved around the kit, I found that the best grip changed. Great advice, Rob!
I'm most comfortable with a matched grip, for me it's akin to, and on par with playing hand drums, which I do. I do enjoy traditional and French for specific styles though. Switchin' gears, just like you said, Rob! ✌🏼
Hey Rob could you do a video showing the difference between what drums sound like in the room vs mic'd up. There's a massive difference IMO what something sounds like behind the kit and mic'd up (with EQ, 'verb, compression)
Killer!! Coming from a marching background in highschool, I think I played German grip for a long time. I'm constantly working on fingers now. Jason Bittner's technique is outstanding! Excellent video!!! Are you still playing mostly traditional???
Unrelated to the video, but how is that Evans Attacktile pad working for you? I’ve been contemplating getting one, but I haven’t seen a non-sponsored review for it yet.
Objectively, American is probably the best, as it allows for the best mix of wrist and finger control, but traditional grip is a little more ergonomically sound, as it allows your (or at least my) left hand to go to the right more easily.

The Best Grip is whatever works best for you !!!!
Originally a traditional player, recently switched to matched and had success with the Tony Williams grip especially my weaker hand
Always enjoy watching your demo on grips. I'm still a traditional grip player. But enjoy watching you. Thanks as always Rob
Love the Police Ghost In The Machine poster. 🤘🏼⚡️😎

At my age, whichever one I can! Words of wisdom from Beatdown Brown. Listen up kids!

Thanks a lot; Your videos have been giving me some cool ideas. 👍
i’ve naturally ended up with french grip on my dominant hand and more of a german grip on my left
need to practice french grip on weaker hand though😮
Very helpful information. Cheers, Rob! 👍👍✌️🥁🇨🇦

Very good! Changing the subject, what model of microphones are you using on the toms?

Hot damn!! That solo skit was something else. What I gotta focus on to play like that?!? Great video RBB 🙏🏾💥
A firm but gently loose grip is the best.
i prefer stew grip 🍯 u hold it with thumb opposing other four fingers wrapped around stick
u can even push pull w this grip too! lol
seems to be easier to b accurate w german when going around the toms. thomas lang showed it.
You forgot the Canadian grip... it has gravy on it :D Great stuff, Rob.
Personally I think gorilla grip is the best

The grip you use when you play the drums is the best grip.
Спасибо за очень пучительный ролик
