Fixed my hands after 30 years! I know, I am posting on the internet and it is nearly mandatory to criticize...can't think of anything I don't like about you. Thanks.
thanks Rob ! I'm a late arrival to the scene in all ways, starting to drum at 65... never thought I was special enough to play. changed my mind. starting from ground zero. your videos are my best source of what I'm trying to learn !
I use the English grip, a pint in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Great for co-ordination. Great videos, I'm learning a lot of stuff I didn't know existed. You're a great drummer.
Brilliant. I’ve be playing for about 35 year and this was great. I think I need to record myself to see what the hell I ‘really’ do when playing. Always great stuff, thanks a mill.
This advice - to change fulcrum from index finger to middle finger completely changed my playing! I now feel much more relaxed when playing. I looked recenlty on many top level drummers and they all have the same grip!
Rob I have been playing sense I was 6 years old. I was taught traditional well I want to learn the Matched method. Still have descent hands even at 75. I'm right hand so my left is my weak hand. Trying to use my left hand is my problem. I see a ton of advantage to the match. Wish I was taught it many years ago. Maybe I should just stay with the traditional. I really like your lessons. You are just great.
Hi Rob, great video. I’m trying to switch from index to middle finger fulcrum. Was taught index finger for the longest time, but watching most of the greats they seem to use the middle finger as well. Could you please do a more in depth video on moving to a middle finger fulcrum. How you did it and some exercises to strengthen this grip etc? Thanks brother peace
Rob, I enjoy your instruction and your playing. As far as traditional grip is concerned, I come from the Henry Adler school, he taught a who's who of drummers and Joe Cusatis was my teacher, for 4 yrs.. [ check out his books] I was taught having my thumb back, creating a solid fulcrum, was the correct means of playing. I'm 69 yrs. old, and without giving you my history of playing, this is the way that I've played for 50 yrs.. I saw ''TONY '' at a clinic and he had no fingers on the stick with his left hand. I play with my left hand turned over and I bounce my index and middle finger. I saw Dennis Chambers do the same thing. It gives your wrists a rest. I'm still a big time advocate of traditional grip and I'm also an advocate of finding the balance of the stick, like '' Buddy ''. Thanks ever so much, Danny
Just come across your channel Rob ! Absolutely awesome instructional videos! For years I was using a matched grip with all my fingers tightly holding the sticks. I used to wonder why my arms used to tire, and it was due to incorrect holding. Thanks to your demonstrations of the various grips my playing has improved tenfold. Thank you!
Rob Beatdown Brown! U are truly a great teacher and great communicator. Ur personality lends to these videos being as enjoyable as they are informative. Keep it bro.
mind blown. I just realized I need to do my finger control stuff from the French grip with my thumb tucked up against my index finger. It has immediately solved at least 3 problems I was having. What tipped me off is in other videos I’ve watched I noticed I should be able to do a single hand single stroke roll without a drum or pad and I can’t. At least not yet.
Excellent information. I particularly think the discussion about switching between French, German, and American grip is important. For example, start in French grip on the snare and play 16th notes from the snare to the first rack tom and back using only the right hand at 60 bpm: (1) snare, (e) tom, (&) snare, (uh) tom, (2) snare, (e) tom, (&) snare, (uh) tom, etc. Now try doing this same exercise using German and American grips and you'll notice it is more difficult. Why? In the latter two grips the hand has to travel a farther distance between the snare and the tom; the distance is less for French grip. Doing this exercise with the French grip, I can play much faster with less work and great comfort. I used to try and force going from snare to toms using German/American grip and it was just frustrating. Once I figured out the French grip approach, I can fly down the toms no problem! The bottom line: it is important to be able to switch between all the grips. Great lesson as usual.
Hey man, after a long pause that must have been like 15 years, I got into drumming again today. I'm 30 and after fiddling around with superior drummer 3 in Bitwig my hands got itchy from the sound and dynamics of the grooves (which I was never able to achieve but always wanted to sound like). Your videos along others really helped me to find the direction I (always) wanted to go towards. Its funny that, after that long pause, when plaing for the first time again today, just before I watched this video, I had the same experience about switching the fulcrum point of my matched grip to the middle finger, that felt like a new freedom of agility and relaxedness. I was worried it might be a bad technique so your video helped alot. Thx and take care ;)
What's up teach, learning a lot every day from U "master drummer". I was in a bad motorcycle accident years ago man, paralyzed arms & hands. So your helping me get back n2 my drumming skills. Yep still riding my bike and I'm enjoying learning more with you!Thank God for (youtube)drummerT:)peace*
Rob Brown, received one of the best tips I've had in quite awhile. I'm constantly gleaning drum instruction channels RB, AB Drums, 80/20 drummer, etc. Your tip about choking up, going in and out of German, American, and French grips was outstanding. Choking up and french made my fast ride strokes soar! I had one grip...American, and my balance point was always the same. The index finger fulcrum helped immensely also. I thought my grip was bullet proof, god I was wrong. This was a large instant improvement.... MANY THANKS!!!
I picked up the sticks for the first-time a week ago (at 48-years old!) and started with the index finger as my fulcrum since that's what all the beginner lessons seemed to suggest. After watching a few of your videos, I switched to my middle finger, and it felt awkward at first, but after a few minutes, it suddenly "clicked". It's like I was getting my index out of the way the way, and it felt so smooth and natural. It's like the sticks are floating in my hands!
Thanks so much for this Rob ,you play so beautifully and natural . I've been trying to gain good stick control and finesse for many years but just can't really find it . I've always wanted to be a good musical drummer and not being able to master good stick control has caused me such painful frustration . Hopefully ,this will help and I will try again and let all my previous frustration go . Thankyou .
Rob, thxs for all the GREAT stuff u share with us, this is not explained on other sites...this is the ABC of drumming , I learned a lot from you, have my best sincere regards and thxs! once again.
I’m in the process of trying to fix my crappy left hand. It wants to by default use my middle finger as the fulcrum point. I use the index on my good hand. I’ve been trying to force myself to use the index on my off hand instead of the middle because I thought I would hurt my progress doing that. Now seeing this I might need to just let my off hand do what it wants and use the middle finger. Thanks for the tips man. Fucking love your videos.
so cool Rob .... Great chops .would like to see a clinic with you if you ever come to the Chicago IL? P.S I finally found a pair of 15' DE hats and bought them last Friday and they come tomorrow!!!! can't wait ...I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve... lol
I just changed from Index Finger to Middle Finger fulcrum (propably used it unnoticed in some instances before) and it had some funny effects. For instance, my finger control on my strong hand immidiatly increased, it felt much more relaxed like I could keep the stick bouncing in rythm with my fingers for hours straight. With my weak hand however it became confusingly difficult at first, as I would suddenly always push the back end of the stick against my forearm.
This is the first video of yours that I've come across. Great stuff! I'm going to follow your lead and try switching the fulcrum to my middle finger... I've seen a lot of guys SAY they're using their index, but when I freeze their vid, it looks like they're doing it your way - with the index finger not really in play much, other than perhaps as a guide. Yours is the first where I've seen someone say, "Yeah, I switched to the middle finger." So here I go!
@RobBrownOnDrums OMG, thank you so much. I’ve played for years and played exclusively single stroke stuff on the kit. I had a multi stroke index/ thumb grip too. My natural single stoke grip was more pinky, ring, middle finger. I haven’t been able to play for almost 10 years and am going back to learn the basics and technique I never had the opportunity to when I was younger. I’ve started the Moeller technique videos on Art of Drumming and while he covers the overall technique, he doesn’t really mention where the fulcrum is when using the Moeller technique. By being mindful of changing my fulcrum to my middle finger, it is slowly fixing some of my bad habits. (Sometimes leaving the left stick on the snare head/burying the stick). I will be practicing on my pad every day to cement the new grip but I think it will take a while to undo the bad habits. Tip for new drummers, develop and pay close attention to your technique from the start! You won’t have to go through what I am now.
In drumline, we were trained to use American grip. I guess I use a mix of American and German grip for drum set, but I’m also a Timpani player in my high school Wind Ensemble, so I use French grip. Cheers. 👍🏻

Nah. Can’t let that break you, man. You just have to know the difference ‘tween the two grips. German grip is about throwing down the front end. French grip is about lifting up the back end. American is a midway hybrid of the two where you can sort of split the difference and do both. Also love the half time shuffle feel you go into. The 14:53 groove reminds me of a Vinnie thing. What are you playing there? Quarter triplets on the bass sounds like against the 8th triplet subdivision.
dude it's awesome but i seriously like to know how to get a grip with the middle finger in folcrum!! can you film a short video??? by the way i like all of your videos
Would you suggest a drummer in their first years tries to develop playing with a middle finger fulcrum, or should they just play a fulcrum that feels best as long as their hands are staying loose and free?
I’d say learn both and see which one you dig better. I just found that for my particular style and technical approach, the middle finger fulcrum makes way more sense for me.
Hey Rob, Great info as usual. I am 47 and beginning to practice seriously now. I have gon back to rudiments and my left hand fulcrum just isn't comfortable. maybe it's because I am learning to create speed using fingers etc. I will try the middle finger fulcrum to see if that feels better. After watching the different techniques you use depending on what your doing, do you have any tips on how to practice these individally? I don't want to copy what your doing, but maybe find a happy medium for myself. Thanks!
Hi Rob - really great video again. Could you please give me the break down of the fast snare lick you do 3 times beginning about 9.47? Is it a 6 -stroke roll with kick accents...I'm probably wrong, it's very cool!
yo Mr. brown, iv been learning on my drum set, progressing well, however one thing im starting to notice as i work on my singles, doubles, and paradiddles (mainly trying to improve my left hand).....and its hard to get my middle finger for that tap control like my right does, then i realized its because i have an old injury on my left hand and i cant feel my index finger at all really, the injurys over 10 years old so i basically forget i cant feel this finger, but now trying to work on technique in detail its now a super pain in my butt.......any suggestions? or should i switch to classical?
Rob, have you ever dealt with shoulder pain from your non-dominant hand? Lately I've been getting pain in my left shoulder, and I don't even really use it as much as talented drummers. I'm right handed. I've been doing some stretching, and exercises which seem to help and I seem really limber when I watch myself play. (as in I'm using my wrists and not elbows or shoulder) It's just really upsetting me and I wondered if you or anyone you knew ever dealt with that? Side note the shoulder doesn't seem to bug me until after a 2 hour practice session.
It's my second week practicing my regularly, and I've worked up this painful burr in my right upper forearm. Any clues as to how this formed and how to prevent it in the future?
If you’re feeling pain, stop doing whatever you’re doing. I’m nowhere near as good as Rob but I know that drumming should not be causing you severe pain and continuing to push through the pain will lead to injury down the line. A couple possibilities is that you’re tensing up or you’re gripping the sticks too hard. Either way, find out what is causing the pain and stop doing it.
As usual great topic! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Moeller method while demonstrating the three. You seem to use the Moeller style throughout your playing. Anyway, your hands look amazing!!!! What type of pad are you playing on and what sticks were you using?
I recently discovered the reason my weak hand (right) is so stupid is because it uses a German grip while my left hand is comfortable with all three. So here I am, 30 yrs into my career first doing American grip singles one at a time at 50bpm, then doubles at 60, then triplets at 70, etc. slowly rewiring 3 decades of improper technique and muscle memory smh.
Fixed my hands after 30 years! I know, I am posting on the internet and it is nearly mandatory to criticize...can't think of anything I don't like about you. Thanks.

Nah. Can’t let that break you, man. You just have to know the difference ‘tween the two grips. German grip is about throwing down the front end. French grip is about lifting up the back end. American is a midway hybrid of the two where you can sort of split the difference and do both. Just work the stick from the wrist and employ the use of the fingers a little by pulling the butt end up towards your palm.
Thank you Rob. I've kind of figured that out and fell into a wrist/finger playing automatically. Guess I was over analyzing. Appreciate the guidance

Hi, Rob. What kind of pad is that on your snare? Best from Rio de Janeiro, Cassio
As usual great topic! I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Moeller method while demonstrating the three. You seem to use the Moeller style throughout your playing. Anyway, your hands look amazing!!!! What type of pad are you playing on and what sticks were you using?
Somedays my fingers won't grip the damn sticks. Cold weather seems worst, like the skin loses its friction?
All this time I was using my middle fingers for the wrong reason.
Whoa, a lot of ghost notes
I recently discovered the reason my weak hand (right) is so stupid is because it uses a German grip while my left hand is comfortable with all three. So here I am, 30 yrs into my career first doing American grip singles one at a time at 50bpm, then doubles at 60, then triplets at 70, etc. slowly rewiring 3 decades of improper technique and muscle memory smh.

When you flop your arms around they seem like they aren't yours. Like someone behind you putting their arms around you.
He's a fake. He can't even play drums. There's been a guy hiding behind him since his first video.
