WHEN I TELL YOU I SMASHED LIKE SO FAST, I was mildly disappointed I couldn't like again for that ✨dramatic lacing sequence✨ Seriously SO well done, as always!! 🤩🤩
As someone who recently wrote their master's thesis about 19th century men's fashion with particular attention to corsetry and other shapewear, this was an absolute treat to watch and really made me want to try out that particular pattern.
I would love to read that! I just left a comment I’ve been trying to look more into it and more extent examples for a personal project but because of many of the many satirical prints and writings it kind of overload the searches. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing your actual thesis would you be comfortable sharing your references? My studies were in medicine (as that’s my profession) not in history /material culture so unfortunately I do have major deficiencies in knowing where and how to look for sources on specific extent and primary sources usually I just end up getting lost down rabbit holes and find all sorts of interesting things but not what I’m looking for 😅. Thanks 🙏 😊
In regards of back support instead of waist reduction, hell yeah! I discovered that wearing one does not only improve my posture while working, it also improves my lifting technice, helping me carry heavy stuff more easely and does not limit my mobility at all. I build furniture as a profession, I have a physicly strainious job and wearing a corset was a great improvement. I am often halfeway climbing into whatever I build or the table saw for cleaning and it is all no problem at all. The improved posture also prevents me from getting shoulder and nack cramps from standing all day leaning forword over my project. For the women, yes, it also is a supirior bust support and in contrast to always slipping bra straps it neither distracts me, nor does it restrict my mobility.
Man you guys have me so excited to get back to my project now 😆 so hype from watching this and reading all the comments. I just have had such poor luck with my binders and got to my 3rd or 4th mockup and gave up because I was concerned it would never fit properly now I’m like I’m tired of being sweaty and my armscye of these machine mass manufactured binders cutting into me. Literally the metal zip eXPloDed on one yesterday I’ve only had for a few years and always am careful with it 😅. It’s time! Especially that back support as a nurse and doing a lot of heavy lifting lately that back support sounds so nice 😭 no more back brace.
Having grown up in a family which looks upon unique fashion and larger self expression of any kind, I just sat through this video cheering every second of it. I only finished my very first amateur corset a week ago and though I am proud- unable to openly wear it. So please: wear yours with the double amount of pride for me:) also: men should absolutely be able to wear corsets.
This is great! I'm also a man that wears corsets. Was hesitant since I always thought they were only for women. Was always fascinated with corsets growing up. I also like the back support since I'm at a desk making costumes, or at a computer. Corsets tend to be tricky though b/c of my proportions. Long torso, lanky, wider hip bones.
I also think the waistcoat looked great, but looked even better when worn over that corset. It makes sense why a lot of men wore these underneath back then. They make a real difference.
I love this! I've heard some other costubers mention men's corsets before and was really intrigued. It was great to learn some more about them. Plus, the waistcoat looks amazing and so smooth with the corset underneath!
Just a point of reference: men's corsets are still sold today. They look different, but provide posture and back support and some are designed to give the male body that V shape that's popular. Anyway, thanks for posting, I have been trying to find a male perspective on clothes from the late 19th and early 20th century. Plus, I have been looking for a pattern to make a male corset, so you definitely have checked all the boxes for me. 😁
as someone struggling with back problems and has an interest in Edwardian and Victorian fashion...I know what is on my todo list now!!! Thanks for the video. The corset looks amazing on you!
I recently made my husband a corset as well and he loves wearing it day to day, though it also works wonders for helping his shape when in cosplay. I think there brilliant!
after years of wearing very uncomfortable back braces for spine issues, I now wear a corset daily. I have two, one for work which is supportive, but still is fairly flexible, so I can bend, and one which is very rigid (put your shoes and socks on first) They make clothes look better, and bad posture is almost not possible. They are always inside the shirt, (stealthing, I believe its called) but have no problems talking about them. Having no ability when it comes to sewing, I had to purchase mine. Most off the shelf corsets are made for women, and have some degree of waist training involved. Both of mine were designed for a male shape, and while there is some waist control and cinching, I really like not only the posture, but how clothing looks with a corset on. Also, WAY more comfortable than the brace/support thing I used to have to put up with!
Niklas I am so impressed with your tailoring/sewing skills. I was aware of historical corsets for men, but this is the first time I've seen any man make or wear one in this century. It was very interesting. Just as with women's historical clothing I can see the reasons why men would wear corsets too because as you demonstrated, the corset gives a sleek neat silhouette. Your waistcoat certainly looks better with the corset! If it is comfortable no reason not to wear it!
I've just Subscribed. Immediately went to this video. I have middle age spread , I'm afraid. 52 yrs old , in Virginia USA 🇺🇲.I saw this in the hopes of making my waist appear slimmer. Thanks , Niklas for the upload.
Brilliant ! I was so curious to see what a men corset would look like ! (I was introduced to your channel 10 minutes ago, now I'm suscribed and on my merry way to binge-watch everything)
Fantastic to see you cover one of these garments! I made this same corset years ago for help with long term back problems and posture issues caused, in part, by a desk job. It's a really nice pattern, surprisingly easy to make, and makes for a comfortable garment. The nicest thing of all is that it's invisible when worn with a full suit and it works some serious magic on the silhouette. Mobility isn't massively restricted, you just have to learn to move a little differently, and if you're spending a long time on your feet it is fantastically supportive for the lower back, so it's ideal for those events where you're not going to get to sit down for a while.
Lemme tell you how fast I clicked to watch after just finding your channel?? I was already planning on making this corset for my TH-cam and seeing it on a person??? Excellent!!
Fantastic! Bravo for making the corset. As a bloke with a few pounds too many around my torso and having poor posture (not as active as in my previous job), a corset could be the obvious answer. Might have to be described as a 'shaper and supporter of the male physique'. Appreciate your channel. Tony
Wow I LOVE this!!! I’m quite interested in dandies and corsetry for men, so it was so cool to see you trying one out! I think that regardless of whether it’s deemed appropriate or not, there’s nothing at all wrong with it and men should wear corsets if they want to. I certainly consider it appropriate haha. Thank you for making this video! I hope we get to see more content with the corset in it at some point. Take care!
Well presented video, as well as your others. I’ve been considering making myself a corset. Not just for my historical kit, but because I have back and posture problems too. More specifically lumbar problems. Thinking this corset wearing may be a thing for me. 😊
I think that it would solve a lot of back problems, particularly for older men, like myself, I suffered a serious back injury in the Gulf War and now that I'm over 60, my back is in constant pain; I think a back brace/corset would help.
Hti there, as it happens,n I'm making my own corset mainly for back support. Io ordered. 2 metres of coutil and when it arrived it looked nothing like yours, it was more like poly cotton fabric. Your corset looks really good, thank you for the demonstration.
I was actually interested if there were such thing as male corsets. I tried asking some female youtubers if they came across male corsets during their research but got no reply, so thank you very much for answering this for me 🙂
Awesome, good sir, as usual. I think fortunetly anything is appropriate for anyone now-a-days. Others can and mind their own business... These are truely the best of times :)
With posture going down the drain from our young people as well as not so young, I would really see men AND women wear a corset. I have one, and believe me, my posture which is really good, goes so much better and it is comfortable while sitting in a proper chair. It prevents you also to eat too much....we all need that! Please do a video with a corset at work, rest and play for a week, it would be very interesting.
It is sublime and It looks wonderful on you. I am inspired. I have a few paterns but I haven’t had the confidence to make them. I need to do like you did and just dive in and see how they turn out. Thank you. 😊
Totally appropriate for men to wear corsets and in fact there are men who are doing so now, and not supportive modern garments for back strain or injury (usually made with a lot of nylon and elastic). I'm happy to see this video showcasing and discussing men's corsets. I'm super curious how your particular make stands up to other stress tests, especially if this is your first time. :D See you next time!
This video has been very helpful. Beautifully shot, lit and sounds lovely ❤. I remember seeing your piece from Bernadette’s channel. I was impressed by your styling and knowledge then. Your tailoring and filmmaking skills feature here are also impressive 👍 😊 As a trans dude I’ve been trying to do some research on creating my own stays similar to another creator here on TH-cam (I remember when they popped up I was literally sewing my 3rd mockup lol) and the idea of just creating a garment to make up the fashionable silhouette is nice to me as someone who doesn’t fit mass manufactured binders very well. Seeing your men’s corset makes me feel much more confident in my project because it style fits quite nicely with your attire. It makes me feel more she that once I’m happy I could make not just a ‘working support garment’ that suits my needs for everyday work but also one that looks nice in my more nice men’s wear so I don’t have to feel like I look so shabby all the time! 😅 I like my Dad AM a bit of a Dandy lol and do take pride in my appearance whether I’m working on the farm or going into town 😊
I never thought about it that way but my parents both have support belts for when they do physical work to protect their backs and it's just a modern scratchable corset in the end
Of course we're curious! Cool video and thank you for touching upon this topic. Especially the photoshoot would interest me to compare fashionplate shillouettes to looks without corset. Maybe there's something in there to make a video out of?
My 66 years old father has wore corsets for more than ten years. Especially to work as he rides train(before covid of course). He has often back problem, hence wearing the corsets
ive never worn a corset before, but i have worn a wet suit before, and that being made from neoprene id imagine has a similar feeling of keeping your waist a sort of shape.
I ordered a beautiful men’s corset/waistcoat made of brown leather that looked super cool with my kilt, but I’ve gained too much weight and can’t really wear it anymore. I agree it restricts your movement somewhat but it also dramatically improves your posture. If I could fit into it, I’d wear it again for sure
Deffo, as a guy i love corsets, they actually healthy to use and i believe they adorn one's body and accentuates their outer display of beauty and elegance ❤❤
Nehelin patterns also has some cool 1890s jacket, waistcoat and pants patterns! I'm not a tailor in any way, I've never even sewn! But they look amazing
I absolutely think it's appropriate for a man to wear a corset. In fact, I think men should wear whatever they want, as should women. AND, as you pointed out, men *already* wear corsets in the form of weightlifting/workout "belts" that absolutely cover the same area as the corset you made. Just because those guys fasten them with velcro instead of lacing doesn't mean they aren't corsets.
Now I feel the need to make one for my husband. He also works a desk job and has horrid back problems because modern society does not naturally build things for tall people. Like furniture. Basic, basic furniture. Only problem I can foresee is getting him to try on a mock-up without realizing what it’s a mock-up for!
As a fellow desk jobber and someone making historical garments in my free time, I fear you making the video wearing a corset on the job all week would probably make away with the last excuse that I have for not making one myself. So yes, I would be delighted. But also no ;)
I think it’s appropriate for a man (or any person) to wear what he/she/they feels comfortable with. If that includes a corset, fantastic! You cut an exceedingly dapper figure with or without your corset, sir, so by all means, do what feels good. Thank you for such an entertaining video. Love, light, and blessings to you and yours.
I always remember the film Topsy Turvey, about the making of The Mikado, and the lead male singer having a whinge because they wouldn't let him wear his corset under the Japanese-style costuming. How can a man be expected to sing without a corset?! 🤣 Great movie for vintage clothing appreciation, as well as for anyone who loves musical theatre.
The only thing that is appropriate for a man to wear is whatever the heck he wants! 🤣 Great video!
Absolutely!
I prefer to wear human skin
@@spelcheak That's.....an option, I suppose.
@@funkypunkypine I'd say requirement, but you can try to go without.
I can wear some bedsheets and towels to supermarket

This means so much to me. Thank you!
✨The queen has been summoned ✨
It is awesome when u realises your two favourite TH-camrs are friends
I knew Bernadette would be here, costube historically accurate corset solidarity y'all
Oh my lord, its the queen herself
"For a torture device, it feels quite comfortable."
Thank you, I cackled out loud when you said that!
As someone who recently wrote their master's thesis about 19th century men's fashion with particular attention to corsetry and other shapewear, this was an absolute treat to watch and really made me want to try out that particular pattern.
I would love to read that thesis!
That sounds fascinating. You ought to publish it online so Niklas can read it. I bet he'd love to.

I love how the corset gives the suit structure around the waist. No more fabric bunching around the waist!
Yayy having seen so many female costumers making corsets it’s nice to see a male version as well!!
