No, I believe that Daphne was so uneducated and naïve about sex and how to become a child that she was completely unaware of what she was doing. I am NOT justifying or excusing what she did, but I feel like a lot of people overlook that she did not know what she was doing. It would’ve been cool if she went to one of her and explained what happened between her and Simon, and her brother exclaimed, but she did was wrong, and that she should apologize for it because that’s not something they would want that to happen to her. Nothing about what you did was OK but also, I feel like she was so uneducated and naïve that she made a horrible mistake. She was right to be upset with her mother in the show because she felt like a fool for not knowing these things.
@@megankelly2048 she knew exactly what she was doing he tries to stop her and she keeps going in the book she even says should I feel bad bc I don’t She IS naive and uneducated but she violated his consent and is a rapist
I would have divorced her of her if I was Simon. And the irony is how she is the voice of reason and the purest (pure of heart) character in the series. Also me: do like show Daphne, but hate how they kept this plot point.
@@gabrielleduplessis7388 All they had to do was cut that scene and go to the argument about her feeling betrayed by his secret. They never talked about the SA at all, so the scene was worthless.
So my opinion on annotating has dramatically changed over the past month. I’m an very much pro annotations. This is because I have been looking at manuscript from the 1200s and later and books from the 1500s and when we see annotations it adds to the history of the book, you can see different readers having conversation with the text and each other and seeing doodles and notes just adds to the text and the experience
I really appreciate your thoughts on When He Was Wicked. It has always been one of my least favorites, because I read the books originally about a decade ago, and angsty romance was very much not my thing. And given the myriad relationship issues that come up in the other books that haven’t aged well, I like that you point out how comparatively healthy Francesca and Michael’s relationship is. And I think the issue with The Duke and I is that (with all due respect to Julia Quinn, I’m a huge fan), she never and still doesn’t see what Daphne did as wrong. When season 1 came out, she did discuss the shift in discourse about it, but she tries to frame it as “doing what she had to do in the context of her time,” never mind that there were other times “historical accuracy” could absolutely fly out the window. And while the genre has (mostly) moved away from romanticizing sexual assault when the man is the assailant (which would have been a popular archetype in the romances of the 70s and 80s), romance authors still can’t grasp that a man can be sexually assaulted, and the woman can be the assailant. There are literally books published more recently than this (within the last decade) where a man’s sexual assault is either brushed aside or treated as not as big of a deal, and they get rave reviews for the most part.
Ew it's the brushing aside of the trauma that really aggravates me and lessens my enjoyment. These issues can be explored, but it just wasn't explored well.
Okay, so you put up this video at the perfect time! My ex boyfriend just texted me and he's an ex for a good reason so I don't want to talk to him. Then I saw that you uploaded this video and I was like,"I would much rather watch a Gavin bookish video than talk to an ex!" Thank you for that!
My mother thought she could handle watching ‘Bridgerton’ and I warned her but she was mortified. She grew up with Georgette Heyer, the OG Regency Romance Writer.
Gav is amazing and he deserves all the goodness, he is absolutely fabulous and has such an amazing passion for books. It is down to Gav and one book that got me back in to reading and why I now have a library of over 1000 books of my own. I am so thankful for our Gav ❤❤
I love you so much. I love how you don’t shy away from the hard topics. You’re not afraid to say this isn’t right. I really appreciate that! Thanks for being you!
I’m only on the first book but I just have to talk about The Scene. I can’t believe they kept it in show!! They slightly change the context around it and have Simon be sober. They treat it like it’s some “girl boss power move” but it was just traumatizing and made me HATE her.
How can Daphne be redeemed after? I really don't see how they can redeem her. Ugh. I haven't seen how they did it in the show but I can't imagine it's much better
@@GavinReadsItAll yeah I hated her too! It made me feel so icky and I actually didn’t finish the show for like 8 months bc I couldn’t stomach it. “luckily” the SA is at the end of the 1st season and bc season two was so praised I pushed through and finished. I hated how they made Simon the bad guy and Daphne the one who was the victim. Fortunately, season two was actually really good and I think you would actually like it, they made it less redundant and quite different then from the book, and Kate and Anthony had better chemistry and there wasn’t any questionable behavior! But yeah like in the book season one started off well enough and just went down hill. And also Daphne is the only apreaence in season two and is barely in it thankfully
Yeah, it was clear that while naive, Daphne knew that Simon didn't want children and she also knew that what she did would make a child so she really can't be excused. She pinned him, made sure he couldn't pull out, and planned it during a moment when he was vulnerable. If the roles were switched- Daphne didn't want children and Simon forced her like this- then Simon would be called a monster. I wish they didnt make it so rightous in the book/show. Daphne reduced Simon to an object, she only cared aboutwhat she wanted.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this already or not, but Pilot makes really good erasable pens (FriXion) and they have a lot of colors. I've been using them in my textbook and they erase beautifully. There's also transparent sticky-notes but I find those kind of hard to use, personally.
Alright I take it all back I’m so intrigued by the series as a whole and literally am desperately in need of Francesca’s book 😂 also interested in how the Netflix show will develop.
Book 7 The daughter finds them, and had them in her room all along. However, rehides them when she realizes that it’s was what her mom was looking for.
As someone who was OBSESSED with this series a few years ago I feel like your takes on the books are very similar to mine and as a When He Was Wicked stan, I'm glad you loved it so much 🥹
Regency romances has always been my secret guilty pleasure so I'm kinda happy now that Bridgerton introduced this to people. The right book is so fun and just a good time. Julia Quinn is usually good with the witty dialogue between the characters. Lisa Kleypas is another popular author of Regency romances and her book Devil in Winter is kinda a classic.
I'm here to support your coordinated annotation plan - think how cute that will look on your shelf, w highlights/ notes/ stickies matching the books! I love it.
I've never been a big enough Julia Quinn fan to buy instead of just taking her books out of the library, but oh wow, I might reconsider for those covers; they're stunning. 😍 I'm so glad you liked book 6 so much! I desperately disliked book 5, so reading Francesca's book was such a balm when it turned out a genuinely solid read. If you ever want to read Georgian romances, I'd love to see what you think about Cat Sebastian's books!
Just to let you know Julia has since come out with second epilogue for each book and ties each story up. I think they’re printed in a separate book bind up. I listened to them on Libby and it had the second epilogues at the end
I know I am late to the party, but thank you for not hating on Sir Phillip, With Love! I'm new to the Bridgerton fandom and finding that my absolute favorite book so far is pretty universally trashed. 😕
I totally agree with you about what Daphne did to Simon. I actually sat back and was like, "What did I just read?" when that happened. It was terrible. I still gave it a 3, understanding that it is a product of its time and not everyone had yet viewed spousal rape as rape. I do wonder if she would rewrite it now if she could. I enjoyed the first half of the book, but my rating is based solely on the first part of the book. It should have ended at the marriage scene.
I just gotta thank you for being here 😅 that thing doesn't happen often anymore - where I found a channel that rejoice me as much as yours does. I just found it and it's time to BINGE. You are so real, the personality and mood is so much there. So yea. Thanks and good luck!

The only Bridgerton book I've read is The Viscount Who Loved Me. I really liked it but the Netflix show is way better. I'm on the fence if I want to read the entire series. But the special editions u have are gorgeous. I think its one of the prettiest illumicrate editions they have done.
When it reached the part about last one I was like "wait but what about the B sibling's book?" And then I was like "oh it was probably the forgettable Cinderella one I guess" and went to Google it.
Hello from British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦👋👍♥️🌲🧘♀️🌲😎🌲☂️🌧❄☃️🍩☕ I read these years ago when they came out 👍🤭 I thought they were fun. I read a lot of Regency romance as a teen ....Georgette Heyer...waiting for new ones to come out...use colour matching postits *** I reread the series plus the prequels...I think that there is way more awareness of the issue with Daphne's behavior now than when I first read it.
Book 6 is also my favourite book from the series. It’s also interesting to see your opinion on book 3, for others it’s a 50/50 as some might like it or some might hate it. I like it but I do agree with what you said though!
in the future if you don’t want to write in your special editions, you can now buy transparent post-its! I don’t use them because I cba to annotate books but they’re handy for very special, rare editions!!
My favorites have always been 2, 4, and 6, with the fourth being top of the list. What can I say but that I love Penelope? I'm good with 1 and 5. I found 3 boring and never re-read it. Same for 7(I assume, I have no memory of it, but I know I read it when it came out). I don't think I ever actually read the last one, though.
I have only liked Penelope and Colin's story. Colin is the only man worth having so far. I gave that one five stars. The Duke and I was fun, but I gave most of the brothers two or three stars so far. Haven't read the younger sisters yet though.
I didn't want to annotate my special edition with markers or anything, but I found semitransparent sticky notes. I use longer narrow ones and bigger ones if I want to add a comment. You should try these, maybe will suit you better.
So glad to have a new video! I was lucky enough to catch COVID and it be the really bad strain so I've been dealing with that. You're positivity is just what I needed. 💜
I'm currently rereading the Bridgerton books, for about the 3rd I think, as they're usually a fun time - I'm on An Offer From A Gentleman and I absolutely hate Benedict! It's nice to know someone else dislikes him too 😂 I've actually not really enjoyed any this time through, I don't if it's because I'm trying the audio 🤷♀️ I'm so glad the show made Benedict more likeable though.
I'm definitely planning on reading more regency stories in general but next year! Now these are my to to be read list lol. Currently reading The Tale of Despereaux and its super charming! It's written by Kate Dicamillo who wrote Because of Wind Dixie. UPDATE: Finished the Tale of Desperaux in one day and Gavin you absolutely need to read this next year!
Gorgeous editions! I was never able to make it through the whole series. DNF'd book 1 (after "the scene") and gave up completely after book 3. So many toxic relationships.
Honestly, never read the books, but I watched the two season of Bridgerton so I kinda got curious about the rest of the books so I ended up reading the summary of Benedict, Collin, and Eloise' stories, and read the description of the rest of the books, I do plan to read it in the near future but not now😅, but out of what I've learned from all the books, I found Francesca's to be most interesting and maybe if I read the series it will be my favorite of the bunch
What’s funny is I read the novels years ago backwards (I read the prequels after the original series not know they were related)because as a kid to college years I would go to the drug stores and pick them up at random. So I didn’t realize there would be such a resurgence with th the show 😂 because in all honesty no one who watched the show would like the books. If your use to reading historical novels you know how they are and the changes they made to the show would put a lot of folks off the original material. I was soo worried this would happen and it did 😂 I still personally enjoy her books but luv hearing reviews like this one. Also Omg those covers are beautiful I now need to go find those to replace my aging paper backs ❤
Loved this video so much! I have read just the first two books and the second is my favorite so far. I'm really excited to read the rest now, especially book 6 D: Glad to see you enjoyed the ride too :)
Hey if you want a gorgeous set of books that's easy to binge - try Deltora Quest! In a similar vein to Animorphs, it's a kids series that's actually really worth visiting and is from aorund the same era, aimed at the same age group but still dark and impactful for adults to read. It's a dark fantasy and yhe the original release covers are so beautiful with the spine showing each gemstone being added to the belt.
Romance is not at all my thing but I'm ready to make an exception for 'When he was Wicked'. Widow characters and characters who are portrayed as prostitutes are important to me so even though I've not read the Bridgerton books, just going by the premise, I think that book is very near and dear to my heart.
I love this series, though I did start the series in college when they were still being release. I have all of the original covers with the step-backs. Julia Quinn was one of my favorite authors growing up. If you enjoyed these but would like to try someone who, I think, is just better I recommend Lisa Kleypas. Her historicals are so good.
Wow our rankings vastly different. My rankings were: 1. The viscount who loved me 2. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton 3. To Sir Philip, with love 4.It’s in his Kiss 5.when he was wicked 6.The Duke and I 7. On the way to the wedding 8. An offer from a gentleman
As someone who has been enamoured by period dramas, I was intrigued people suddenly liking the genre. Where were you when I was dealing with uncool people in school who didn’t like them? Of course I’m kidding and I’m no one to judge. If you connect with it, great.
Great to see you back in another video I would definitely annotate them even with the clear wider tabs for writing a bit more on them, then you could have Co-ordinating tabs for each of the books. Even with paperbacks that you have use washi tape for putting in tab places that way they won’t stick out of the book and be annoying when you have to put book back on the shelf xx
I am gobsmacked what happens in the first book!! Holy shit 😮 I have never watched the series so didn’t have a clue. Oh my goodness. In one way though it brings to the forefront that men unfortunately are subjected to rape too regardless of whether they are married or not. That is shocking 🫢
Only read the first Bridgerton book and I had such a hard time with the subject matter just because there were themes that I personally struggled with. The wanting of kids and what happens with the idiot guy and all of it. So it was so rough. Also a common term for a rake today would be a player or a f***boy.
This set is gorgeous! I have the Once Upon a Book Club box editions so I'm waiting for books 4-8, but I think I will read them and tab them. The Duke and I is my least favorite due to Daphne's behavior/choice. I DNFd the book and only watched season 1 a couple times, but I can't watch that anymore due to those parts. Now The Viscount Who Loved Me...chef's kiss! I've only read the first 4 books, but that book is my favorite. They changed the show to add more drama because it's TV, but still love the second season and especially the book!! Also, have you thought of annotating just by using tabs/flags?
I just asked Siri who sang the Shoop Shoop song originally and it was a lady by the name of Betty Everett. Share was just doing a an awesome cover as usual.
I just finished reading the last one! I did not expect to enjoy On the way to the wedding this much tbh! Also I would expect that you would at least mention our first queer character of the series! ☺️ In the book at least, because the show has already introduced us to some, and as they announced there will be a queer love story as well. But I loved this nonchalant character in the book, his reactions were very amusing.
I have no interest whatsoever in reading the novels, but those special editions are stunning! Can totally see why you bought them
I’m glad I bought them now and it really did force me to read them, which didn’t turn out to be a totally bad decision haha

The only Bridgerton book I've read is The Viscount Who Loved Me. I really liked it but the Netflix show is way better. I'm on the fence if I want to read the entire series. But the special editions u have are gorgeous. I think its one of the prettiest illumicrate editions they have done.
Never even intended on reading them but it was fun watching you go through them lol
Let me get my popcorn and settle in for another Gav movie 🤗
Oooo enjoy 😘
When it reached the part about last one I was like "wait but what about the B sibling's book?" And then I was like "oh it was probably the forgettable Cinderella one I guess" and went to Google it.
Hello from British Columbia Canada
🇨🇦👋👍♥️🌲🧘♀️🌲😎🌲☂️🌧❄☃️🍩☕
I read these years ago when they came out 👍🤭 I thought they were fun. I read a lot of Regency romance as a teen ....Georgette Heyer...waiting for new ones to come out...use colour matching postits
*** I reread the series plus the prequels...I think that there is way more awareness of the issue with Daphne's behavior now than when I first read it.
When He Was Wicked was so emotional 😭
I didn't want to annotate my special edition with markers or anything, but I found semitransparent sticky notes. I use longer narrow ones and bigger ones if I want to add a comment. You should try these, maybe will suit you better.
I should have got some of those!
So glad to have a new video! I was lucky enough to catch COVID and it be the really bad strain so I've been dealing with that. You're positivity is just what I needed. 💜
Aw get well soon ❤️
One of these books in particular made me sob so can’t wait to see your reaction. Let’s gooo. I love historical romances 😍
Oooo which one? I'm so intrigued 👀
@@GavinReadsItAll book 6. That one from beginning to epilogue made me cry! Lol I’m just a crier apparently
I really do need to try out the show, I ran out of time during this vlog but I will check it out at some point!
@@GavinReadsItAll It will be interesting to see what you think.
Absolutely love your choice of books really like your relaxing approach hope to see more of vlog thaks
Season 2 of the tv show is so so so good.
Gorgeous editions! I was never able to make it through the whole series. DNF'd book 1 (after "the scene") and gave up completely after book 3. So many toxic relationships.
Yessss I am soooo happy that my 2 fav books are your fav too 💕💕💕💕
You have Stationery that matches the colour of the book? MARRY ME ALREADY! I OFFER MY HAND, KIND SIR!
I absolutely adore your videos! Thanks so much for updating so regularly 🤩
Thank you so much for always watching, I appreciate it so much ❤️
Okay but those copies are GORGEOUS
When he was wicked was my fave of the series.
You could get clear sticky notes and write/highlight on them.
I’m gonna get some
What’s funny is I read the novels years ago backwards (I read the prequels after the original series not know they were related)because as a kid to college years I would go to the drug stores and pick them up at random.
Glad it got better after the second book but yeaa think I'll give these a skip. They sound ok but not my thing. Amazing video!
I just found your channel because of this video and you are HILARIOUS! Love the editing
Loved this video so much! I have read just the first two books and the second is my favorite so far. I'm really excited to read the rest now, especially book 6 D: Glad to see you enjoyed the ride too :)
Oh! I love to annotate my special editions. But i use sticki tabs and washi tape/post its so its removable
I should have thought of that!
Widow characters and characters who are portrayed as prostitutes are important to me so even though I've not read the Bridgerton books, just going by the premise, I think that book is very near and dear to my heart.
no you’re right that scene in the duke & I was foul
I seem like missed the bullet with the first book. I started reading it, then dropped it, and never came back
I'm so glad someone hated The Duke and I as much as I did, like I just want to know why Julia Quinn wrote it like that ugh
Those are gorgeous books!
They really are!
I think you look good. Relaxed…could you at sometime show how you make your coffee. Looks so good
your videos are pure serotonin ♡
I love this series, though I did start the series in college when they were still being release. I have all of the original covers with the step-backs. Julia Quinn was one of my favorite authors growing up. If you enjoyed these but would like to try someone who, I think, is just better I recommend Lisa Kleypas. Her historicals are so good.
Ooo thanks for the recommendation on Lisa Kleypas! Hadn't heard of her
I also like Jude Deveraux historical and Catherine Coulter historical
Wow our rankings vastly different. My rankings were:
1. The viscount who loved me
2. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton
3. To Sir Philip, with love
4.It’s in his Kiss
5.when he was wicked
6.The Duke and I
7. On the way to the wedding
8. An offer from a gentleman
As someone who has been enamoured by period dramas, I was intrigued people suddenly liking the genre. Where were you when I was dealing with uncool people in school who didn’t like them?
Of course I’m kidding and I’m no one to judge. If you connect with it, great.
Great to see you back in another video
I would definitely annotate them even with the clear wider tabs for writing a bit more on them, then you could have Co-ordinating tabs for each of the books.
Daphne should have been knocked in to the middle of next week, I am shook as well that it was handled with so poorly.
@@cleg78 agreed! And yep it does highlight that men can be victims too. I wish the author explored it better instead of brushing it aside 😔
Only read the first Bridgerton book and I had such a hard time with the subject matter just because there were themes that I personally struggled with. The wanting of kids and what happens with the idiot guy and all of it. So it was so rough. Also a common term for a rake today would be a player or a f***boy.
Well, I'm a completist so now I am hoping you will one day read the prequel Rokesby series.
Oooo I probably will!
Gorgeous set!
