Great video Scotty, it was very informative. How about a review on battery desulfators, such as the Noco Genius 5 and 10 chargers that have a repair mode, and Pulse Tech chargers that also desulfate batteries with a patented frequency, rather then voltage spikes. I know what you mean. The battery in my old 2004 350Z died after about 6 years and then a month later the
one in my 2014 Infiniti Q60S failed. Both cars use the same type of battery and it cost
$236 for each battery. 6 years ago the batteries were $110. I also bought a new
battery for my 1990 5.0L Mustang about three years ago and it was like $125.
But it is not just batteries. I replaced a weak slow turning cooling fan assembly
in the 350Z a couple years ago and it was like $230. I had to replace the same
fans in the Infiniti a month ago and the assembly, which consists of the two fans and
the little control module was $630. It is like every part for a car has more then doubled
in the past three years. Still, given the price of the new cars and how expensive and
unreliable the latest ones are, I think I'll just keep repairing the older ones I have.
I am just thankful they all have manual transmissions and not the new breed of
unreliable automatics or garbage CVT's and the engines are normally aspirated
reliable V6's and a bullet proof V8 in the old Ford.

I had a major dispute with Walmart over trying to return a dead battery that was under warranty and failed after about 18 months. They argued I had to pay the difference between my original purchase price and the current day price to get my "36 month free replacement" battery replaced. I explained that "free replacement" meant just that. I wasn't looking for a refund, I just wanted them to replace the battery like for like. After about an hour of arguing my point, I left and drove about 20 miles to the next nearest Walmart. They eventually replaced the battery, but made me leave it with them for a day to prove that it wouldn't hold a charge. It seems Walmart has changed their stance on easy batter returns. No more Walmart batteries for me.

If it fits and isn't too expensive, buy a higher capacity battery. I bought an AGM battery rated for about 50% higher CCA than my car needed and it lasted for about 10 years.

I did exactly that. All that "excess" power isn't really needed here in West TX, but in 2 years I plan to return to CO and it will be quite useful in the occasional extreme cold spells there in winter.
Also agree that IF you take care of your batteries, it's really surprising how long they can last (I also use a desulfator to help them do that).

Yes, remember when battery acid came in a box with a plastic bladder, and you filled the batteries and gave them a charge. Yes, I am old. When these pre-filled batteries came out, we always charged them before putting them in service because you did not know how long they sat after they were made. We charged them just to make sure all the sulfites were not laying on the bottom of the battery and were back in solution. Do that to this day. Had an Interstate battery in my 95 Harley and it lasted 11 years. I did put it on a battery tender every winter, but 11 years in a motorcycle is amazing.

Changing or even just disconnecting your battery is sometimes trickier than it should be. On some vehicles, it'll disable the stereo and/or nav system until a security code is entered after you hook the power back up. If you don't have the code, you may have to take it to a dealership to have it done. One of my co-workers has a Kia that will refuse to start the engine again if the battery's disconnected and reconnected unless you know a code, and the dealer she bought it from won't give out the code. They try to force you to pay them to do anything that requires the battery to be disconnected.
Older cars are just so much less trouble.

It ended up the shop owner said the guy that brings the battery's had just been there a week ago, so he blamed the battery guy for stocking his shelves with older battery's. I left realizing that I taught the owner how to read the battery codes, pretty sad to the unsuspecting customers 😂😂

My daughters Subaru Loyola was a 1991 and I replaced it in 2001 the car had 134k on it. I think the original factory batteries are much better than the batteries available at the auto parts stores or Costco or Walmart etc. I have had batteries I bought at Shucks, O’Rilleys last a year or a year and a half then die. Always start simple. The first thing I look at is to make sure the customers belt is there. I can't tell you how many batteries I've walked out to go test and the belt is missing. Why, old belt, a bearing that seized up, someone mis aligned the belt, a wrong battery installed when it needs to be a agm battery, check to make sure the battery terminals are tight, etc. Than I test the battery with a hand held unit. Depending on those results, the next best test for that battery is a load test. After that checking the charging system with the proper equipment and understanding that vehicles charging system. Worse case like scotty said something drawing the battery down and than troubleshoot that problem as needed. Personally I'd stay away from Walmart and their batteries. Good luck getting someone to help you get the right battery to start with. Second I travel enough away from home and some places I go do not have a Walmart anywhere close by. But there's always a autozone or oreillys in those smaller towns where there no Walmart. The extra price I pay for a battery is worth the convince. If you are concerned about the price of a battery costco is another place that has good prices on batteries, assuming you have a membership.

It was dead, but since I personally didn't buy the battery there was no warranty and no proration. So I asked for their prices, but ultimately bought one from Walmart since for the same type and rating of battery (actually Walmart's warranty was better too) it was like $60 or $70 less than AutoZone. At least the AZ employee understood why I didn't want one from him when the previous one failed after only a few months.

There’s only 2 major USA Battery Manufacturers , East PENN which builds Maintenance Free batteries there in Lyon Station PA and Clarious which bought out Johnson Controls there based out of Canada , they build low maintenance batteries for the after market and Maintenance Free for the Auto Manufacturers .

But wouldn't the dealer give her a free replacement battery under warranty since this one failed after a month? If no, never go to them for anything again.

Just replaced battery in a Camry, Walmart was place to go, cheapest battery and 3 year warranty, any other place was more and the warranty was only one or two year warranty.

Years ago when I brought a car battery and it had a 5-yesr warranty......I woild ask for "the biggest" battery thst I could get.
Meaning the highest CCA rated battery that I could get. I do not recall exact battery rating. I knew if you had a battery with 700 CCA rated......it w p uld last longer than a 500 or 550 CCA......those were seen as "cheap" batteries back in the day. Which would only last a couple of years.

Just saw a news story in Phoenix, guy bought a 3 yr old Nissan Hybrid used $16000, has 70,000 mi and the battery has failed. Nissan gave him a price of over $20,000 to replace the battery - $18,000 of that is the battery. after the news station contacted Nissan they said they'd give the guy a 50% discount on the job. Hmmmm. Buying the future? Whose?

I have a 2018 dodge ram that has a parasitic draw from the wipers. Took it to Dodge to have it repaired and install a new battery. They ran it through its test kept it for a day never found the parasitic draw. They charged me $432 for the battery and 480 to pick it up and put it in. The parasitic draw drained that battery in the first year and a half. The guy that changed my transmission told me about the parasitic draw and the intermittent switch on the wipers causing the relay to stay engaged periodically I agree Walmart would’ve been the much better route.

The Walmart battery warranty was pretty good. I bought a battery 12 years ago and had it replaced 3 times. I think they prorate more in their favor these days.

To corroborate what Scotty just said..... I had the same battery problem after I bought my 2017 truck and in 2018 I began to have starting issues and went to Advanced Auto and they checked my battery with their machine and they said it was NOT the battery it's maybe the alternator so after a couple more days I wouldn't start and I jumped it and with it still under warranty I drove it to the dealership said it was a bad battery and replaced it. I about 2 weeks it did the same thing and they flat bedded it back to the dealership and they had to replace the battery again! That's been about 4 yrs ago so don't ever trust the tester at those chain stores!

I had a 2018 Equinox - the battery died suddenly. Replaced it, bought it at Auto Zone. That battery died. They swapped it. Turned out to be a defective rear wiper motor killing the battery. They at least didn't charge me to return the dead battery.
