True except he doesn't seem to have any stock of anything on his store. I got sick of waiting and ordered a similar kit off AliExpress. It was less expensive and actually came with a new lens to cover up the gap left by the smaller screen.

Sega Nomad is basically a portable Sega Genesis. I found one, complete, years ago in a pawn shop for $10. They were getting ready to trash it they said. So I picked it up for $6! Needless to say, I have hung on to it for years and still get an itching to play it once in a while! I would love to do the screen upgrade and battery mod. It would get a lot more use! The game library for this machine is awesome!

I remember taking my Nomad into Gamestop back around 2000-2001 and trying out their used Genesis games on it. Lol. The dude working there got pissed and told me I wasn't "allowed" to do that. I'm not sure if that was an actual store policy at that time or not, but I'm a pretty easy going person and didn't want to be a douche, so I took the Nomad out and locked it in my car, then went back in and finished shopping. Every time I see anything about the Nomad, though, I'm reminded of that. 😂

The Nomad's screen being blurry despite higher pixel count is likely because instead of running through the internal digital output from the processor/GPU itself, so it gets a 1:1 pixel mapping (like the GBC mod does, tho that's 2:1) before going to the analog output converter, it takes that composite output from the console and then converts it back on the screen, so yeah you would see pretty much how it looks on a modern LCD without anything else than plugging the console to the TV on composite.

I remember a few years back a retro modding company called Rose Colored Gaming did front light mods and custom paint jobs for the GBC, WS, and NGPC.
I did grab a final fantasy Wonderswan from them. Such good work.
They used the AGS 100 front lite from the SP. Anyway I remember them saying the Neo Geo was the hardest one to do because it had the least amount of space inside the shell despite being the biggest of their handhelds.
I’d love to see a backlight NGPC though...

Marcel Petrus, the screen mod is fairly simple to install is you have some adequate soldering skill. However, I highly recommend getting a 5” screen rather than the 3.5” screen. It actually mounts to the top of the Nomad, but makes gameplay much more enjoyable. I put a link to the screen I bought from eBay in another comment.

Just recently I was lucky to acquire my very own Sega Nomad at a game store close to my house, after saving up for it by trading in several PS3 games and an old DSi, aming other things.
The Nomad had to be sent off somewhere offsite for repairs because of some damage that the LCD screen had on it, and what transpired is that the repairman managed to do what Wes did, which was frankenstein a similarly-sized LCD screen from a GPS monitor, which was a MASSIVE improvment over the original screen, which I was aware of (thanks to a video that Stuart Ashen had about the Nomad), so that saved me time and money having to mod the screen myself.
No Li-Io battery in there, but what'cha gonna do? (DC IN can tide me over for a while) Best $130 I have ever spent! Thanks for the video!

Installed a backlight screen mod for my GameBoy Color over the frontlight mod I did several months back. Bought the backlit screen from Handheld Legend for $75, and the price dropped to $50 and has the 3D printed spacers to align the screen properly. I need to get black double sided tape to prevent the light from seeping out, but it works better than the frontlight mod (kept it for a future GBC in case the screen in it doesn't work). I also have a Nomad that was repaired by the person that runs a game store shop that is going to be modded soon, and the Nomad can be modded to allow region unlock and playing Master System games using the Everdrive or Mega SD.

Having a replacement screen that matches or is an exact 2x (or possibly 3x/4x...or slightly larger, but adjusted to black out the extra lines) match to the original is important to keep odd pixel artifacting. That's why a lot of newer handheld emulation devices kinda suck...many of them just don't care and let it display how it displays on the cheapest screen they could buy in bulk.

sounds like the BennVenn AGS-101 screen to GBC mod, am I right...? I'm actually the owner of one of his first ever pre-builds of that from mid-2017 (the atomic purple one with red SMD power LED that's in his first build video) but I've barely played on it because of the issues with dust coming in and landing onto the screen itself, and also the console not being able to run my Everdrive GB without shutting off due to the battery consumption. I need to sort out an up-to-date one with him!

The Nomad was the truth back in the day. My older brother got one, and it was mind blowing. We didn’t know anything about the screen being weak, when we showed it to friends, it was like showing a lighter to a caveman. Yes, the battery life was bad, and you had to carry bigass genesis cartridges, but damn, it sure was cool. I dig these mods though.

Your lucky it came with the battery pack, people on eBay want $70 just for that one part. That is why I did the internal battery mod for MJR on the Nomad, I didn't have a spare to give him, and honestly running on AA batteries on the Nomad is such a waste of money, even with rechargeable batteries, as they take longer to charge then they last in the system.

    • @Luffym17
      @Luffym17 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@PhoenixDawn2525 I use eneloops on my nomad and it only takes a half hour longer to charge them. (I get 4 hours on my nomad and it takes four and a half hours to charge. If I had two eneloop quick chargers it would just be 3 hours since the chargers only hold 4 at a time and it charges 2 batteries in an hour and a half) I also have an extra set of eneloops just to swap when the other ones 4 hours are up. While its still a little longer then it lasts to charge them its not that big of a deal to me because its not that much longer. I do agree with you on standard non rechargable AAs though. Unless your using ultimate lithium batteries the thing eats them really fast and I agree that it is a waste

I have this same Nomad upgrade, and the screen is decent by modern standards, but fantastic compared to what was there before. I wish it had a better resolution match however, that would have helped. As for the battery... there is no way it gets up to 4 hours. Maybe 90 mins at most, maybe. Still, I'm very happy with it. The Nomad, in your hands, feels great - it has a great d-pad, the buttons feel great, and it runs everything like a Genesis model 2 since that's what it is. Nice thing is these never go down in value at this point so I don't mind paying some money for it. Hopefully that battery lasts for a while but apparently it's pretty easy to change down the road when it's out of juice.

The backup camera LCD mod for nomad is using composite video signal (yellow RCA). That's why it looks like crap. I have the mod on my Nomad and it is a million times more clear than the original (💩). Maybe one day an RGB capable LCD will turn up to replace the mod. I doubt it.

    • @schweatty

The solution already exists. I upgraded my Nomad and my Turbo Express with an RGB board from Japan + new lcd. The issue is that the boards are hard to get ahold of because the company will only sell to Japanese residents. Luckily I happened to know a guy who is from Canada and lives in Japan and runs a retro Ebay store for a living. So he was able to get me a couple of the boards and I ordered the rest of the parts. isanchez64 I originally put in a replacement 3.5” screen but got frustrated by the small size of the screen. Then it occurred to me that since it is essentially a TV out port, I could put in any size of screen that I wanted. So I found a 5” screen and mounted it to the top of the Nomad. I can’t tell you how much more enjoyable playing the Nomad is on 5” screen versus the 3.5”. A 5” screen is what the Ps Vita used. I put a link in another comment I posted with the screen I bought if you are interested. I’m not selling them, just pointing them out to others to help out.
