    In this quick video guitar lesson, I will show you how to improvise using the Phrygian Dominant mode by using your familiar harmonic minor scale forms.
    By watching this quick little improvisation and talk about the Phrygian Dominant mode, you will learn that it is simply a mode of the harmonic minor scale. More specifically, it is the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale.
    Using that knowledge, I will quickly demonstrate how to locate the Phrygian Dominant mode in all keys using some simple scale theory.
    After that, you will be able to improvise with this very interesting sounding scale. You have probably heard this scale many times if you are a fan of hard rock and metal music. Many famous guitarists including Kirk Hammett, Marty Friedman, Dave Mustaine, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani have used it extensively to give their soloing a very exotic and musically satisfying flavor.
    Hopefully, after you watch this video lesson and review the harmonic minor lessons cited above, you will also be able to add this super cool sound to your arsenal.
    Good Luck!
    Carl..

    When I was in college the lecturer taught us the E Phrygian scale then immediately asked us each to improvise over him strumming chords, I hadn't taken in what he showed us but I new if I noodled licks with the E Harmonic Minor scale the effect would be exactly the same, totally blagged it and there was him thinking I was paying attention lol

  • @DanielVerberne

    Am I the only guitarist here who struggles with the theory and instead has visualized the pattern of this mode (along with other modes) in several positions and can "connect" those scale patterns? I realise this is a possibly a poor-man's way of learning music ... but it works for me.

      +Daniel Verberne Many guitarists do it the way you do. E Phrygian Dominant is the same figure than A Harmonic minor. It depends on what the rhythm section plays. Do they play in E than it is Phrygian Dominant, do the play in a, the same figure turns out in Harmonic Minor. Many guitarists see it in this way.

    What are your ideas for soloing over a rock style progression of F G Am? I see this three chord progression a lot in the style of music I play. Thank you!

    • @ethanpunto9222
      @ethanpunto9222 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Try the mixolydian mode over the major chords and then perhaps phrygian over the A minor.
      Use the F, G and A minor arpeggios to pick out chord tones to target landing on during certain runs/phrases/licks. But also experiment with targeting notes outside the chord tones at times to see what kind of sound you like.
      Listen to your favourite solos and pick out exact parts you really find awesome, perhaps its literally just ONE note that he lands on during a particular time during Tornado of Souls for example. Even though that may be a difficult solo in itself you can certainly try to pick out notes and "flavours" that you like. And then use your ear to try to simulate that sound in your own playing. I know transcribing intimidates a lot of people but if youre just tryna find a single note that has a particular colour over a particular chord you could definitely trial and error it. Good luck :)

    • @ethanpunto9222
      @ethanpunto9222 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And most of all after a little while you wanna just forget the framework and ditch what sounds bad and keep what sounds good. It sounds like condescending advice but i think as guitarists we forget this one crucial piece of the puzzle when we're tryna find "the answer" to our playing sometimes lol

  • @chrismartin8467
    @chrismartin8467 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Carl why you use G note in the video in the time about00:18 because of our A minor G NOTE is kinda G#?

    • @ahuhehihause1
      @ahuhehihause1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chris martin spreading G# in all chords sounds bad.. usually harmonic minor harmonies alternate with natural minor chords. For example. try to play Dm7 Em7 F E7 . The first 3 chords use G, while the last one use G#, therefore, only in the last chord youll be able to use G# while shredding

    • @chrismartin8467

      but you're welcome, anyway :D

    • @OljeiKhan
      @OljeiKhan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ahuhehihause1 actually there is no G note in Dm7 and there is no g note in regular Am so you can still shred this scale if the backing track is something like Dm-Dm9-Am-Am9-F-E-F-E. This progression stresses that F to E passage with the dm chord and the C to B passage (wich is the fifth of E , so it is a strong note in the scale)
      And the G note is missing from regular Am or Dm too so you can play something as basic as Am-Dm-Am-E and still be able to shred this scale.

    I'm not gonna lie, but I get dissointed sometimes when it comes to this scale. Not the scale itself, but I get tired of hearing a power chord with a solo that just runs the scale. I love how melodic it can be. All those tensions aren't there for nothing, and it's a major sound. There are at least 5 modes in there from the Altered scale you can use for serious tension!

    • @OljeiKhan
      @OljeiKhan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like sequencing the notes with string skipping and you get to hear how the scale sounds when you give it a different pedal tone. I think it's a great way of taking that tension somewhere after you've already given the dirty and broken sounding stuff that you can do in this scale.

      +Jeremy Martin this is a Phrygian dominant tutorial which is a different mode than Phrygian. Yes Phrygian is the 3rd mode of the major scale. Phrygian dominant is the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale. :)

    A tip: screw trying to count backwards 5 steps, just count forward 2 steps. If you're in E phrygian -> F ->G Harmonic minor. Much easier in my opinion.

    • @johnnyh64
      @johnnyh64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except that would be wrong. You would need to count up a 4th to E Phrygian, F, G#, to A Harmonic minor. Go down 5 or up a 4th (counting the E itself both ways).

    • @ARMYStrongHOOAH17
      @ARMYStrongHOOAH17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyh64 You're right, I was wrong 🤦‍♂️🤣. My apologies. But I'm a bit confused by your explanation. If there are only 7 notes in a scale how could you be going up 4 or down 5? Together that would make a 9 note scale. IMO you shouldn't count the note you're starting from (since you're already at the note, it's not considered a step of movement, if that makes sense). So, from E Phrygian, count back 4 or up 3 (4+3=7 notes = a full scale):

    • @johnnyh64
      @johnnyh64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ARMYStrongHOOAH17 You can look at it that way as well. Technically it’s a 7 note scale but you usually count the note itself as it’s note #1. Example, in this example the E note is the 5th note of A Harmonic Minor, with the notes A (1st note), B (2nd), C (3rd), D (4th), E(5th), as explained in the video. Going up from the E as you are suggesting might be easier, always leaves us 4 notes (counting the E again, E (1st note), F (2nd), G#(3rd), and finally A(4th note). Note how you counted the notes themselves going both ways, you also count the A twice (going down AND up), as you are not counting the intervals but the notes themselves.
      Think of a Major 3rd interval. You count the notes going up A, B, C. That’s 3 notes, not 3 steps from the root. Make sense? It’s so hard to type such seemingly confusing topics. I think you understand correctly, but you’re just counting steps (intervals), not the amount of notes. Another example is that a perfect 5th is 4 notes away (as you would count it, A>B 1 step, B>C (2), C>D# (3), and D#>E (4). That’s not how it’s done usually. You count the notes A,B,C,D#,E (5 notes, 4 steps). I hope that’s more clear. Either way, now you’ll get to the proper note but I would refer to this method as it’s the one that’s commonly communicated.
      To simplify, go up from E Phrygian dominant a 4th to A Harmonic minor :). It might help to draw the notes out on a guitar neck to visualize what I’m saying.

    • @OljeiKhan
      @OljeiKhan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it makes it a lot easier for western music. This is a fantastic scale but it is a mere replication of an eastern music mode wich has some comas in it. A coma is a note that isn't found within the western system of music , Such as a quarter flat b.
      So in order to give the modes feel , you make it a mode of harmonic minor and everyone becomes happy.
      + the scale is really harmonic minor. Just like your minor scale being a mode of major scale.
