THIS JUST IN! "Peeing is an effective weight loss method" - SciShow Im gonna be rich selling this and with the SciShow name backing me, who would ever question it? Mwahahahaha!
Technically it's "losing mass" not "weight" because weight is the downwards force created by gravity and you're not changing gravity you're changing the amount of "stuff" (mass) your body contains.
And if you lose mass, your weight will also decrease, since, ya know, we're still on Earth and gravity stays pretty much the same. So yeah losing weight isn't wrong.
It's losing mass and weight since we're all on earth. But if we were in space, we would lose mass but not weight since we have no weight in space but we have mass.
"Losing mass" is technically correct, but in the casual non-scientific lexicon, it's "losing weight". We all experience similar gravity, so it's essentially the same thing.
Concerning the heat thing... Maintaining homeostasis does in fact need calories. I'm pretty sure that you lose more weight if you are colder. Well, that's just on the top of my head. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I usually am).
+Rose Knight both heating and cooling down increase the energy usage of your body by about the same amount (assuming an equal difference in temperature). yes being cold does increase fat storage but only if your Calorie intake has a surplus. if your calorie intake is neutral or negative you wont magically start storing fat that isn't there. in fact white fat cells start burning fat when they sense cold, which is probably why you start storing it as well .
so, real question: We know the chemical reaction required to break down fat cells and turn them into energy the body uses, why haven't we duplicated that action artificially so we can control the fat content of our bodies? I know this sounds like i'm just lazy, and I really am, but i'm also curious as to why a real 'miracle' pill hasn't been developed? Is it too dangerous? I would argue prescription drugs are or would be just as dangerous. I've wondered why we don't yet have 'manual overrides' for our bodies yet. They're amazingl complex things yes but how have we not cracked at least this one code yet?
There are drugs that cause you to burn fat incredibly fast, but they are INCREDIBLY dangerous, as burning fat = lot of energy released = higher body temperature, it's very easy to die of heat stroke or cooking yourself inside out, due to how high your metabolism goes. People can sit in the freezing cold, naked, and still be hot.
SuperMegaUltraPigeon completely forgot about heat as a byproduct. Would an ice bath help keep it from being as dangerous? and whats the expected burn time and end result of such a drug?
+ColdSiris You will burn fat incredibly fast like i said, but even with an ice bath its incredibly dangerous, your body is still going through a huge amount of stress from the shear heat your body produces. It usually lasts a whole day and you can lose lbs in a day, but i really would not recommend due to it being incredibly dangerous, and also illegal.
+ColdSiris There are also amphetamines (Adderall) which are great for losing weight, as they kill your appetite and raise your metabolism (Eating is like trying to eat rocks, no joke). However amphetamines are still fairly dangerous and addictive. Best option would be fasting/heavyweightlifting. Lifting heavy weights gets you strong, is easy and burns fat efficiently, without having to put toxic shit in your body or run 5k.
It's also very dangerous to simulate some drugs into the body, like how steroids increase adrenaline and muscle growth, eating a " magic pill" would eat your fat quickly, but once you go off it, you would gain enormous amounts of weight, making you dependent on the pill
I've been around since before the internet but not the 1800s. And that vibrating belt machine my best friend's mother had one when we were little kids still in elementary school and we used to love to get on it and jiggle around and talk while we were doing it! LOL. I take umbrage at the term old timey as I used to play as a very little kid with a jiggle belt electric thing. :-)
At the Health Spas I belonged to in the 60's, I loved the shoulder belts & rollers because they massaged all the tension out of your back, neck & shoulders built up from sitting tensed up all day at work, relieving headaches & upper body tension causing deep relaxation & good night's sleep. Anybody know where I can buy those old machines now? Can't find any, anywhere.
I see a lot of people simply stating "just eat less" to lose weight. and while I understand the notion of "just eat less"... eating less doesn't actually make you lose fat, because your body adjusts to the reduced food intake and works slower to save energy. So all in all it won't help the way people want. If one really wants to lose body fat then they have to eat healthy in a moderate amount and also exercise. As long as one uses ones body and exercises it doesn't even really matter what you eat, but some foods are of course better than others with less side-effects.
Very true. When I ate just one meal a day, I couldn't take the weight off. When I started eating regularly throughout the day (without even changing my activity level), the weight came off. One other factor: I'd also dumped my toxic bf. So less stress, less cortisol production. Cortisol causes the body to store more calories as fat. Exercise not only burns calories while you exercise, it raises your metabolism so you continue to burn more fat for a period after. And once you build more muscle, you can lose more weight even while resting, since muscle burns more calories than fat does. Bonus, exercise reduces stress--see "cortisol production" above!
Theon Greyjoy It's a little more complex than that, though. Different people do have different metabolisms--this is why some people (like my mother) would have to consume extra calories to put weight on--while some others could eat a fraction of the calories and not lose weight. Genetics can play a role in that. There are conditions (thyroid problems, Addison's, etc) and medications (like some antidepressants) that can affect weight loss and gain. The way the body processes food can differ: conditions like long-term stress affects cortisol levels. High cortisol can cause one to store more calories as fat. What and when one eats affects insulin levels--which also determines how one stores fat. There have been studies indicating that diet sodas can actually cause weight gain--the current hypothesis is that even though the sodas may have zero calories, they still impact insulin production. Also, there is evidence that our intestinal flora can affect weight loss or gain. Fecal transplants between skinny rats & fat rats caused the skinny ones to put on weight, and the fat ones to lose weight. And, as the OP stated, eating less can cause the metabolism to drop; since the body "thinks" food is scarce, it will work to conserve fat stores by burning calories at a lower rate. Exercise, OTOH, can raise metabolism. So yes, while the amount of calories one consumes vs the amount expended does have a strong affect on weight, it is not a cut-and-dried mathematical equation; there are many other factors at play.
Hilarious episode, greatly appreciate this morning entertainment xD Oh and I see why you didn't show your lower body, guessing you had those inflatable sauna pants on ;P
A safe way to lose weight is to have your large meal first thing in the morning & eat less as the day goes. You'll store less at night when you're sleeping... It doesn't happen overnight, but I've lost 70+ lbs in less than a year this way
+Nowan Inparticular This is true. Plus make sure it's not crappy meals like a triple baconator lol. Add walking for an hour 4-5 times a week and you lose weight even faster. But that requires actual work. People want to see results but still keep eating as they do and sitting in front of the tv all day.
VeronicaR well one technique -which I totally didn't think of one minute ago- is to download a podcast and walk around your neighbourhood for an hour YAY!
+Narklmarf Ever heard of the Dolphin Browser? It's on iOS and Android, and it's got both an adblocker addon AND a Flash Player addon so that you won't have to use all the shitty apps to watch videos, and you won't have to watch shitty ads before watching the videos either! Though you'll have to download both addons individually from Dolphin's website after you install the browser. Here are some links: dolphin.com/download/ (to download it) dolphin.com/lab/en (for the addons) This browser is actually very popular. 50 million downloads on Google Play last I checked. And no, this isn't spam.
George Perakis its stupid tho because i would mutch rather use google chrome app and youtube app on my ipad than some sketchy browser, plus google chrome has all my bookmarks and shit no thx
That's one crispy shirt bruh. Love your videos ! Also, the gym is the way to lose fat. Although.. I've been going to the gym for quite a bit of time now but it seems losing weight is not as fast as one might think.. or maybe I'm eating too much after the gym.
We had a neighbour got one of those belt machines. It was on the adjoining wall and it sounded like roadworks for the three days it took her to lose interest in it
Those electric weight loss systems work. There's one that they use often in prisons called "The Electric Chair." One ride in that, and it stimulates your muscles, and burns fat. The Electric Chair is so good at what it does, that the fat will slowly go through what the creators of the chair call "Decomposition" for years to come. I highly recommend this treatment.
This is the best debunker of "easy" ways to lose weight. Always remember, if sounds too good to be true, it is not. I would note however, that the use of a TENS unit does have good use in pain management. I have a trashed low back that has been operated on 4 times and putting the electrodes by the area that hurts, I.e. on both sides of my low back does help with pain relief.
SciShow, do you have/would you be interested in doing a long video going over/debunking myths within nutrition, diet and exercise and how it relates to each other? I think it would save people a lot of work, effort and research.
Thank you for covering this topic. Now can you do a video on all the ways to lose weight without diet or effort that actually work? Thank you in advance.
Other fads...doing crunches (at least one way and 1M times), starve yourself or eat less (controlled portions do NOT count; ex. the French eat rich stuff but never finish it or have a small portion), diets of one specific food group, certain pills and supplements (sorry, if you drink whey and don't exercise or be active it's not beneficial). The list lists goes on... What I would like to know from +SciShow is about how real thermogenic supplements can aid in weight loss ("burn fat"). I hear a lot of ads lately about leptin resistance (which I believe) and how the small fat later in life (aka belly flab for men and leg flab for women) can actually hurt you when older, when metabolism, testosterone, and other hormones are down. This is not to pin down any one product that actually works, but I like to see the science on that and any info that can give us better knowledge (or at least confirm what we've learned). And of course, you must have a regular, active program of aerobic and anaerobic exercise and proper meals and portions. Oh, stay hydrated with H2O too! XD
sad to say i fell for the water weight one. Ended up using it as an insulating layer in winter rather than a weight loss device. It was a velcro on corset like affair. It really did insulate like nothing else, which was great for single digit winter weather. Didn't work on my weight though.
What about those platforms that shake as you stand on them? Does it have the same effect as the belt (i.e. no effect)? or does it help in anyway. My parents bought one -.-
The vibrating belts actually do work I used to lose weight all the time using that method it itches like crazy do you need to use it for a long. Of time before you actually get any effect per day Placerville to lose 20 lb in a week don't believe me get yourself one use it for about 2 hours a day High settings it's going to itch like crazy but after exactly 7 days you'll see a huge difference Also I gave this video just like can't see it because TH-cam stupid new policy but yeah your information needs to be better tested I know from experience that belt definitely works
Isn't the Slendertone FDA-approved? I believe it is but probably not for weight loss.. And btw, the vibrating belts, are they the same thing as let's say power plate? The vibrating platform? I read somewhere that studies show different results but that there is some gain to them, please correct me if I'm wrong :)
My dad said that his mom (my grandma) went to some kind of weight loss place every week for a while. After every session they measured her waistline. She noted that they pulled the measuring tape tighter than the last session every time.
I've seen professionals using full-body EMS devices as a training aid to make the workout multiple times more effective. It's apparently really tiring and you can only do it for 5-10 min which is equivalent to an hour long workout without the device. I don't know how good burning fat works with it, but I guess it's at least as efficient as normal training.
"If you're not as slim as you'd like to be, don't eat so much. You should join the mass-watcher's programme. But if all you want to do is lose weight, go to the moon." I can't remember the name of the physics series that quote was from, but I definitely remember the line.
someone bought a muscle stimulation device at a thrift store I work at and I told him I prefer not to let a machine stimulate my muscle he said "don't knock it till you try it"
An important key to weight loss (that people don't talk about enough) is in what you eat, and how much you eat. It's important to find the middle ground between stuffing yourself until you think you'll pop, and eating so little that you don't have the energy to do anything. A good rule of thumb for a meal is to eat until you are 80% full, which means eat until you get to the "saving room for dessert" stage. I'm not saying don't eat dessert. I'm saying eat your meal AND dessert until you get to the usual "saving room for dessert" stage.
There is some validity to the sweatpants thing. One major source of energy consumption in the human body is maintaining internal body temperature. By increasing the temperature of your surroundings, your body has to work harder to regulate itself. The downside is, as mentioned, that the individual will have to consume more water than usual. Also, it would be even more effective to simply turn down the A/C during the summer and turn down the heater during the winter. This method would also be much cheaper since not only do you not have to purchase a pair of sweatpants, but also save you quite a large sum on the electricity bill.
The fastest way to lose weight is through amputation.

"Patreons on Patreon" --- I heard that....
EMS machines are great for sore muscles. I don’t know why, but on a low/medium setting it does wonders.
I went to the International Space Station to lose weight.
THIS JUST IN!
"Peeing is an effective weight loss method" - SciShow
Im gonna be rich selling this and with the SciShow name backing me, who would ever question it? Mwahahahaha!
Technically it's "losing mass" not "weight" because weight is the downwards force created by gravity and you're not changing gravity you're changing the amount of "stuff" (mass) your body contains.
And if you lose mass, your weight will also decrease, since, ya know, we're still on Earth and gravity stays pretty much the same.
So yeah losing weight isn't wrong.
It's losing mass and weight since we're all on earth. But if we were in space, we would lose mass but not weight since we have no weight in space but we have mass.
I think you are a few feet too far up your own ass.
"Losing mass" is technically correct, but in the casual non-scientific lexicon, it's "losing weight". We all experience similar gravity, so it's essentially the same thing.
Am I the only one who finds his voice and manner of speaking incredibly relaxing?
I would just wear the sauna pants on cold days.
Hey Michael Aranda: As a lighting designer, I both love and hate your hair. LOL
Concerning the heat thing...
Maintaining homeostasis does in fact need calories. I'm pretty sure that you lose more weight if you are colder.
Well, that's just on the top of my head. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I usually am).
+Rose Knight The cold also gets your body to store fat though as far as I know
Just Another i dunno.
Great video!
so true people need to actually exercise
+Emely L. Ants don't need to exercise, though. People should start being ants.
TheFishCostume I don't quite understand....
+Emely L. I don't get it either and it's making me feel antsy.
.....
Jason Shifley That's the spirit!
Your voice is relaxing.
so, real question: We know the chemical reaction required to break down fat cells and turn them into energy the body uses, why haven't we duplicated that action artificially so we can control the fat content of our bodies?
I just came here for the science but what the heck - this guy is ridiculously beautiful O.O It's kind of disturbing actually
Not my type 😏
Theon Greyjoy What is the OP wrong about?
Jet fuel melts fat cells.
VeronicaR well one technique -which I totally didn't think of one minute ago- is to download a podcast and walk around your neighbourhood for an hour
YAY!
We had one of those vibrating band things in my house as a kid. Fun times. Commence the jigglin'.
when you feel bad because you're naturally skinny
me too
I know that feel! They should make this as the topic for the next video!
+insertrandomcleverusername what do you mean by that? Why somepeople are underweight?
+insertrandomcleverusername what do you mean by that? Why somepeople are underweight?
Yup. I'm in that boat. I was 16 before the air bag light in the car actually registered that I was there.
Usually, the "One weird old trick" kind of ads I see around are not for losing something, but for gaining something else.
Sauna pants make me hot.
And wet
CUB3M4ST3R ;)
Can't be good for sperm count. Maybe a new form of birth control too?
Man's Not Hot.
Expect some burns.
My grandma had one of those shakey belts. It was so fun to play with! And she would get so mad at us!
Step 1: Go outside
+Kevin Karro
Step 2: Go for a walk
2:42 all I could think of was the Carousel of Progress in Disney world XD
People still see adds? you guys are doing the internet wrong
Or on mobile :P
+Narklmarf Ever heard of the Dolphin Browser? It's on iOS and Android, and it's got both an adblocker addon AND a Flash Player addon so that you won't have to use all the shitty apps to watch videos, and you won't have to watch shitty ads before watching the videos either! Though you'll have to download both addons individually from Dolphin's website after you install the browser. Here are some links:
dolphin.com/download/ (to download it)
dolphin.com/lab/en (for the addons)
This browser is actually very popular. 50 million downloads on Google Play last I checked.
And no, this isn't spam.
I do not mind ads if good TH-camrs get money from them...
Siddhant Goyal I turn it off for some youtubers but for websites that spams random stuff I'm good ill keep it on
George Perakis its stupid tho because i would mutch rather use google chrome app and youtube app on my ipad than some sketchy browser, plus google chrome has all my bookmarks and shit no thx
That's one crispy shirt bruh. Love your videos ! Also, the gym is the way to lose fat. Although.. I've been going to the gym for quite a bit of time now but it seems losing weight is not as fast as one might think.. or maybe I'm eating too much after the gym.
how to lose weight: EAT LESS
+Fiona Owletuck Or simply, eat less.
Doesn't matter what you eat, just how much.
Yeah true, a teacher ate only junk food for month, to prove to his class it doesn't matter what you eat... He lost 20 pounds...
+Nerd Nation *2 months
+SuperMegaUltraPigeon Not how weight works, despite what diet companies have been telling you.
+SuperMegaUltraPigeon Actually it really does matter what you eat even if your eating less...
We had a neighbour got one of those belt machines. It was on the adjoining wall and it sounded like roadworks for the three days it took her to lose interest in it
Tips on loosing weight
1: go to the gym
2: go outside
3: go on a diet
Problem solved
"... you probably see a lot of ads...". Oh Michael, adblock is here and it's fucking awesome. You should try it out!
Not sure why this video is so funny he looks so done with the ridiculous weight loss methods haha!!
So that's what those belt machines in the old movies where! I always though they were for muscle tone or rubdowns.
What you mentioned that wiggle chair... The one that goes around in a circle...? That works??
I like the metal band on your Apple Watch, cool shape.
Darn, I was hoping for more old-time photos or videos of the devices in use.
I havent seen those.
I use adblock. I also dont see ads on this video.
Learn this strange old trick now!
SciShow, do you have/would you be interested in doing a long video going over/debunking myths within nutrition, diet and exercise and how it relates to each other? I think it would save people a lot of work, effort and research.
The Advertisement Played Before this video EXCATLY SUITED THIS VIDEO XDDDDDD
XD
I remember back in the late 90s when there were infomercials for sauna pants. Totally bonkers
I love the EMS for my back pain it's amazing
Watch this video. If it is possible for you do these, these simple excercises can solve it once and for all th-cam.com/video/lFpx0cpmJ3w/w-d-xo.html
sad to say i fell for the water weight one. Ended up using it as an insulating layer in winter rather than a weight loss device. It was a velcro on corset like affair. It really did insulate like nothing else, which was great for single digit winter weather. Didn't work on my weight though.
In the opening animation, that object that goes spinning around the ringed planet and out of the frame looks like a dalek to me. It isn't, is it?
Learn the truth behind weight loss ads with this one one, neat video!
(Exercise device charlatans HATE SciShow!)
What about those platforms that shake as you stand on them? Does it have the same effect as the belt (i.e. no effect)? or does it help in anyway. My parents bought one -.-
The vibrating belts actually do work I used to lose weight all the time using that method it itches like crazy do you need to use it for a long. Of time before you actually get any effect per day Placerville to lose 20 lb in a week don't believe me get yourself one use it for about 2 hours a day High settings it's going to itch like crazy but after exactly 7 days you'll see a huge difference
Also I gave this video just like can't see it because TH-cam stupid new policy but yeah your information needs to be better tested I know from experience that belt definitely works
She noted that they pulled the measuring tape tighter than the last session every time.
is that aubrey plaza at 1:36?
While watching this video I noticed an ad in the ''suggested'' videos that said ''5 min cellulite destroyer''. Oh, the irony...
If you click on any of the "don't eat this" ads you go to a shop for green coffee beans or something similar.
The EMS seems really useful.
Imagine you're walking around for an hour while wearing the EMS!!
It was fun anyway and I promise I'm not as old as dirt. LOL
Bruce Lee was a big proponent of that electronic muscle machine. Claimed 30min. of shocking his abs was the same as doing 3000 crunches.
I've seen professionals using full-body EMS devices as a training aid to make the workout multiple times more effective. It's apparently really tiring and you can only do it for 5-10 min which is equivalent to an hour long workout without the device. I don't know how good burning fat works with it, but I guess it's at least as efficient as normal training.
ohh ok, but now i have a question, what about external lipolysis and other methods? can you explain those too? i'm pretty curious
i cant belive that you didnt mention how people used to swalow intestinal worms to have them eat some of your food and thus avoid gaining weight.
"If you're not as slim as you'd like to be, don't eat so much. You should join the mass-watcher's programme. But if all you want to do is lose weight, go to the moon."
I can't remember the name of the physics series that quote was from, but I definitely remember the line.
someone bought a muscle stimulation device at a thrift store I work at and I told him I prefer not to let a machine stimulate my muscle he said "don't knock it till you try it"
I get those ads all the time!
This method would also be much cheaper since not only do you not have to purchase a pair of sweatpants, but also save you quite a large sum on the electricity bill.
could you please also talk about green coffee pills and the chemicals that are in ads these days tooo
Well, time to log off and get some exercising done.
