This was true for me with German and I am committing so much time with my other 4 languages already. The two major hardships that I have been facing as a speaker of multiple languages are being branded as a “jack-of-all-trades, master of none” and the impostor syndrome.
I can relate so much with the part where you explained how you can’t translate some expressions into other languages! And that’s also why you shouldn’t strictly learn vocabulary just by memorising a literal translation in your native language, but rather require new words and expressions by context and not looking up what it actually means! It’s definitely easier for me to do when I’m more experienced in a language but it helps so much to really speak the language and also think in it, instead of translating everything silently. For example: Hardship is a new word for me in English. But I don’t even need to look it up, I now know perfectly what is meant by it thanks to your explanations of the difficulties one can face when speaking several languages. And I can use it more easily in the right context because I learned it through an English context, not by looking up what it means in my native language, since the translation could be used differently
I also think that's why a lot of Menschen (people in German) wanted a certificate it kinda gives them confidence by saying "I'm good in this language" since you can't really measure how good you are in a language they turn learning schools for certificates to have confidence in themselves in their target langauge.

I had already acquired my Hangeul characters knowledge in the year 2000, and due to varied reasons, I didn't continue to learn the Korean language at that time. But now I resume the studying of the Korean. I don’t know why, but nowadays when you walk on the streets in Taipei, you will easily see the posters advertising TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean / 한국어능력시험), so I guess I would take TOPIK, too, in the future. Here is a Taiwanese girl (young lady) who has obtained her TOPIK II Level 3 certificate four years ago, and she totally learned the Korean language on her own (self study). Possibly her Korean capability has even achieved at a higher level by now. Great video As a South African, living in Germany, I was surprised how few languages ppl speak in the world. Africa is a special case. In South Africa we have 11 official languages. A third of the country is educated with English as primary language, but most speak their own languages at home, whilst having to take a 2nd additional language at school, and sometimes a 3rd, depending on school and region. By the time you get to high school, you've been using 1, 2 or 3 languages at school, which is a lot when comparing with other countries. I used to think this is normal. And other less developed countries in Africa have more languages. So kind of difficult to define what polyglot means. Someone who speaks 6 languages error-free on a basic conversational level, but can only write in 2 of those languages, can you consider them a polyglot?? Not so easy to define i suppose
I think translating the term polyglot can help to find the answer. And that's amazing! We have, as far as I know, 3 main languages in Belgium + English. But I don't think the majority learns to speak all four. I might of never learned German if I didn't want to learn it myself.

Literally my feelings when I learned Mandarin. I'm Vietnamese btw, and English is my second language, but I used so much time for learning Mandarin, it's even better than my English now. And anytime I talk to my Chinese friends, I usually mix Mandarin with English in the unconscious, I even couldn't find a better word in English to express my thought and in the contrary. When I moved to Spanish, I become more confused when now I mixed Vietnamese-Chinese with Spanish and French. It's really a big crisis with me, and I comfort myself that's normal with anyone who learning many languages, especially in the first time. Maybe this problem can fixed through time. I am a Spanish student who is also studying French and German. Some days before, when I was in the Spanish class, when I had to say ‘and’ in Spanish (y), I used the German word ‘und’ instead. (I changed it before anyone noticed 😂) In Tamil, we use these words ‘கூடக் குறைய’, ‘ஏறத் தாழ’ & ‘கிட்டத் தட்ட’ which are kind of similar to Spanish ‘mas o menos’. I hope one day I would learn Korean. I am always interested in learning Korean because I've heard that Tamil & Korean have a lot of words in common.

Your examples of phrases from a language that perfectly fits what the speaker feels is very interesting. The meanings of words are created by the language community, but an individual has emotional ties to certain expressions. This is why I’ve decided to only swear in english (my mother tongue). Swearing in Spanish just isn’t satisfying. Your video reminded me of reading in english writers of 18th and 19th century. You constantly run into latin and greek. It was assumed at the time that the reader was familiar with those dead languages.
This video is great! I can call me a polyglot, and all these hardships are too familiar to me. In my case sometimes there is jealousy not only from natives, but also from ordinary people ((. I also follow other polyglots channels, but I like yours, because you tell all information "without water" (in russian it means without unnecessary information, that's why it is not boring). Also your english is great, and I always write down some words or phrases which you used in video!!
Where I come from, the majority of people speaks 5 languages so it's super normal to be a polyglot. I think that it's pretty interesting reading and hearing about polyglot experiences from monolingual countries.

I don't think i qualify as a polyglot, yet, sometimes, languages that i used to learn and forgot because i stopped, german mainly, comes back to my dreams. Most languages i know though i can hear very well and read very well even if i don't learn them anymore, but speaking is on another level. Usually i also tend to remember grammar and basic words so i can write spanish and German, two languages which i don't learn anymore, with the help of a dictionary somewhat proficiently, i wouldn't say i know them though and never consider so. The biggest inscentive on language learning i feel, is always interest in culture. I stopped spanish and German because i couldn't find anything interesting about their culture, yet i study Japanese now around mid jlpt n4 level because I'm interested in anime, rock music and samurai, all from japan. I also think that i will learn korean once i get proficient enough with Japanese Always do things at your own pace language learners! Good luck!

I totally feel this. I'm Filipino and my second lang is English but I also speak in our dialect called "Ilocano" and I am studying Korean at the moment. So much confusion that I mix them up all the time!😭🤣
I think that's what i feel nowadays with Spanish, specially because there are some local expressions that you don't really know unless you get exposed (for me, i always get lost with "echo/echo de" because depending with what comes next it can completely changes the meaning of the phrase). By the way since you're studying Portuguese you might have heard about this word: '"saudade" (the feeling of missing something or someone), which i think it doesn't have a literal translation to other languages xD
There are people who bring you down because you aren't perfect but they aren't even trying to learn a language . Just like my older sister but she's monolingual.

Just about a week ago I released a video about the 12 official multilingual terms, and there I described the word "Polyglot" almost the same way you did here 😂 It seems like polyglots like to think about the same things (not a big surprise, but still fun to think about that)
The hardest one is definetely numbers. English is the only one I'm comfortable with when it comes to numbers, I can't even say or understand numbers in my native Filipino. korean and japanese as well, they have these object markers and pure and chinese-based which makes it a bit confusing especially in korean. But arabic is definetly the hardest, i really need to pause when im counting in it, because in arabic, if the noun is male, you need to use the female numbers, but if its a female, you need to use male numbers, and when you add numbers to a sentence, you need to conjugate every adjective.😭

Watching your videos makes me reflect on myself . For an Autistic Introvert i think maintaining a language is a hardship for me. I only self study so getting a good reference is kind of a trial and error for me, I also don't have any friends irl (just 1) and i don't have a friend of my target langauge (even If i do I'm too shy to talk to them) so I practice by talking to myself.
Some people do that, too... Talking to oneself. It is because there is nobody to talk to.. But later on it is like ... ehm .... it's impolite to say. Self-talking is definitely a kind of way out. But if you have a chance, at least you can try writing letters (now sms, chatts, etc) to persons who understand the language that you learn. As far as I know there are several Facebook-groups which provide such opportunities, if you have an Fb-account....
Certain people have specific gifts. Some women are very beatufiul, e.g. Cleopatra, Queens of beauties every year, some actresses, etc. Others have beautiful voices, such as Maria Carrey, (late) Whitney Houston, Pavarotti, Andy Williams, etc. Others have musical talents, such as Slash, Richard Clayderman, Jimmy Page, Kenny G, etc. There are famous painters like Pablo Piccaso, Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, etc. The world recorded extraordinary magicians, such as Houdini and David Copperfield... There are even great generals like Hannibal, Alexander the Great, Shih Huangdi, Cao Cao, Zhuge Liang, Genghiz Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, Erwin Rommel, Gregory Zhukov, etc. I have read Mario Pei's book : the Story of Language, a Polyglot is also a talented person, a heavenly gift, which not everyone can have.... It is just a pitty that we Polyglotts cannot show our talents in front of public. As I have written you that I understand 6 foreign languages, though not as fluently as you do.....
I listen to Chinese speaking better than Russian, but I can understand Russian articles faster than Chinese. I must scrutinize to understand Chinese articles, what it is about.... I only dream in Indonesian or English... Sometimes German in the past...

I know this sounds emo (almost all my comments are) but do you sometimes ask yourself "now that I learn the language, what's next?" It's the thought I often think (except for Japanese) I guess the fact I never really thought of making language learning as a career, and being okay as long as I can reach out to people and the fact that have a hard time dealing with social anxiety and expressing my thoughts makes me wonder If learn the language what will I do next? or I still wonder if Language learning is still for me?

This video is great! I can call me a polyglot, and all these hardships are too familiar to me. In my case sometimes there is jealousy not only from natives, but also from ordinary people ((. I also follow other polyglots channels, but I like yours, because you tell all information "without water" (in russian it means without unnecessary information, that's why it is not boring). Also your english is great, and I always write down some words or phrases which you used in video!!
Where I come from, the majority of people speaks 5 languages so it's super normal to be a polyglot.
I think that it's pretty interesting reading and hearing about polyglot experiences from monolingual countries.

I don't think i qualify as a polyglot, yet, sometimes, languages that i used to learn and forgot because i stopped, german mainly, comes back to my dreams. Most languages i know though i can hear very well and read very well even if i don't learn them anymore, but speaking is on another level. Usually i also tend to remember grammar and basic words so i can write spanish and German, two languages which i don't learn anymore, with the help of a dictionary somewhat proficiently, i wouldn't say i know them though and never consider so. The biggest inscentive on language learning i feel, is always interest in culture. I stopped spanish and German because i couldn't find anything interesting about their culture, yet i study Japanese now around mid jlpt n4 level because I'm interested in anime, rock music and samurai, all from japan. I also think that i will learn korean once i get proficient enough with Japanese

I totally feel this. I'm Filipino and my second lang is English but I also speak in our dialect called "Ilocano" and I am studying Korean at the moment. So much confusion that I mix them up all the time!😭🤣

I think that's what i feel nowadays with Spanish, specially because there are some local expressions that you don't really know unless you get exposed (for me, i always get lost with "echo/echo de" because depending with what comes next it can completely changes the meaning of the phrase).
By the way since you're studying Portuguese you might have heard about this word: '"saudade" (the feeling of missing something or someone), which i think it doesn't have a literal translation to other languages xD

Y también, me ocurre que cuando se me olvida una palabra en mi lengua nativa, llega a mi mente en otros idiomas menos en el original xD. The hardest one is definetely numbers. English is the only one I'm comfortable with when it comes to numbers, I can't even say or understand numbers in my native Filipino. korean and japanese as well, they have these object markers and pure and chinese-based which makes it a bit confusing especially in korean. But arabic is definetly the hardest, i really need to pause when im counting in it, because in arabic, if the noun is male, you need to use the female numbers, but if its a female, you need to use male numbers, and when you add numbers to a sentence, you need to conjugate every adjective.😭

For an Autistic Introvert i think maintaining a language is a hardship for me.
I only self study so getting a good reference is kind of a trial and error for me, I also don't have any friends irl (just 1) and i don't have a friend of my target langauge (even If i do I'm too shy to talk to them) so I practice by talking to myself.

Talking to oneself.
It is because there is nobody to talk to..
But later on it is like ... ehm .... it's impolite to say.
Self-talking is definitely a kind of way out.
But if you have a chance, at least you can try writing letters (now sms, chatts, etc) to persons who understand the language that you learn.
As far as I know there are several Facebook-groups which provide such opportunities, if you have an Fb-account....

但, 对俄语来说, 我们应该知道, 去走 还是开车, 我们去一次(once), 还是 习惯(habits), 每天, 每星期, 等等.
我们去, 然后回来, 还是去然后站(stay) 在那里....???
我们应该用别的词.
然后tenses, 像欧洲的语言.
我不记得全的语法的规定.
其实汉字也很困难, 但现在有汉字的keyboard. 很帮助地多.

There are even great generals like Hannibal, Alexander the Great, Shih Huangdi, Cao Cao, Zhuge Liang, Genghiz Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, Erwin Rommel, Gregory Zhukov, etc.

I listen to Chinese speaking better than Russian, but I can understand Russian articles faster than Chinese.

I know this sounds emo (almost all my comments are) but do you sometimes ask yourself "now that I learn the language, what's next?"
It's the thought I often think (except for Japanese)
I guess the fact I never really thought of making language learning as a career, and being okay as long as I can reach out to people and the fact that have a hard time dealing with social anxiety and expressing my thoughts makes me wonder If learn the language what will I do next? or I still wonder if Language learning is still for me?
I also ask myself the same question! I do believe that asking myself many questions about my future always helps me improve! ☺️☺️
