Making Crab Rangoon Wontons At Home | But Better

- They have many names, crab puffs, crab rangoon, cream cheese wontons. If you've ever eaten at an American-Chinese restaurant, then you've likely had these before. They're pretty good but we can make them completely homemade, very easily, and more importantly... much, much better.

The best thing about crab rangoon is that tons of restaurants don't even make them anymore. They've been rebranded as "cream cheese rangoon" so that they don't need to put crab in
Crabs expensive, it's actually quite understandable
China moon in CA does and they are delicious!!
@@chucklesdeclown8819 That'd be a valid excuse if most places actually used real crab. Most of the time when I've had crab rangoon, it's been made with the imitation stuff.
I mean they could use imitation crab
Case in point, there are two "Asian" restaurants in my area. One sells crab rangoon with crab (probably imitation.) The other sells "fried wontons" so they don't have to put crab in it.
we need a "but healthier" segment. with your skills and history as a former biggy boy you might just be the man for the job

$650 today. For rangoons? Make it make sense.
@@djdubuisson83 What a waste to deep fry such a delicacy and with cream cheese! If this is the actual price, then it would make the cost of these little parcels just a bit more than $72 each or £53.00. Perhaps one of the most expensive takeaways in the world. Give me the crab on its own with salt and pepper, a squeeze of lemon and some lovely brown bread with a good quality hand made butter.

Anything and everything my mind wonders how to cook or want to cook...I have to make everything from scratch bc I live in Spain and international products arent easily available and when found too expensive. But when I look up anything your videos always appear its quite pleasant. Amazing content, team and chef!!! Thanks
I used to work in a 2 Michelin stars restaurant on the French riviera a few years back. We used to make lobster ravioli with this shape. The dough was made with the Lobster rod, so it was dark green when raw and turned bright orange once cooked! Pretty cool to see!
And also we would refine the shape with scissors so the edges are nice and crisp.

I did have time to make this sauce tonight to go with my homemade cheese wontons and it was 🔥

Yuma, we need to talk.
@xhthepikachu Gaming Considering the texture of crab in something like this is either going to be shredded meat, or slightly rubbery, you could probably sub out crab for some other fish or chicken, maybe certain varieties of mushroom? If all else fails, imitation crab is a solidified puree of fish.
Yep, one of my favorite foods in the world. I’ve made these before but never made the dough, I got to try that! I great little trick I’ve only seen once in a restaurant is add some curry powder - nothing too spicy. Either mix it into the crab mix, or sprinkle a little bit before sealing the wantons. I mean it’s hard to top the classic, but it’s a nice little variation :)
I woke up today not knowing it, but this video was exactly what I needed in my life. Papa delivers yet again

Best crab rangoon I ever had was at a Japanese place in my town. Not only did their cream cheese mixture have real crab, but they had it spiced with a mixture that I know had turmeric (but I'm not sure what else I tasted in there).
Anyway, it had a slightly Indian flavor profile and a nice sweetness and I nearly died
I am so happy you made this , Crab Rangoon is my all time favorite
Papa you are so right! After a busy shift in a kitchen there nothing better than comforting fried food!
I’ve never wanted to taste anything more than this...I’m salivating
Looks awesome and yeah most places that serve crab rangoon rarely have crab oddly. The beauty of wonton is that you can pretty much stuff them with anything as I've made salmon locs wonton and even a spinach kale cream cheese wonton. Even tried your older recipe for the salted yolks inside a wonton with cream cheese blended with cooked crumbled sausage for a breakfast wontons. Great stuff and love your show as it's very inspiring to help cook 🙂
i used this as inspiration to make my own crab ranGOONZ, but with maryland bluecrab i cooked and picked myself. amazing.
Best crab rangoon I ever had was from a crab shack chain. Can't beat when they're made with real crab and cheese
Hey thank you so much for this video. I whipped these up in no time without a scale, with the wrong kind of starch, with corn oil instead of veg and with canned crab instead of fresh and the woman who lives in my house still said it was incredible. This was a really fun little kitchen adventure.
It wouldn’t be a “But Better” without a “Let’s make this, shall we” and an “Alright guys and that is it” 😂

One thing that I've seen several local chinese places do that might explain the lack of visible crab in the filling is that they tend to use a blender or food processor to make the filling...it tends to leave you with a mixed puree that lacks a lot of the texture of crab, but gives you an interesting shift in taste.
Best sauce for crab rangoon is a half sweet & sour mixed with an equal amount of hot (chili) oil
Actually made something that makes sense with accomodating ingredient's. Good job
I am so glad I'm watching this while I'm eating because wow those look so amazing 😳😁
I am PUMPED about this video dude. Thank you so much. My local Chinese restaurant has the "ball sack" shaped ones and every other restaurant I have gone to has the square shaped. Not gonna lie... I've had 'fancy' Crab Rangoon before that had tons of jumbo lump crab meat in them... and I kinda preferred the cheap shit. I think for me it's just one of those foods that is supposed to be shitty.
It's comfort food and most comfort food foods are cheap. They're not meant to be super fancy. I love crab rangoon but I make mine very simple, a little bit of crab meat, cream cheese and sugar and that's it. Very simple and quick.
I'm the same way. I prefer more cream cheese than crab because I usually eat it when I order takeout and want comfort food.
A restaurant around me makes big triangle shaped ones. Not much crab and the cream cheese is spread out more. I like them alot better than the shape he did
I like crab with sweet and sour sauce. But if it's going to have cream cheese, might as well go all cream cheese wonton, no crab, and no sauce. The combination of cream cheese and sweet and sour sauce or crab is just gross.
Is like the mcchickens.
Its not supposed to taste gourmet. Its literally bread and chicken and lettuce

Thanks for this video!! We don't eat shellfish anymore, so I was really missing those rangoons. Loved the fried cream cheese filled wonton. Those textures are amazing. Now I feel confident enough to try and make a vegetarian version. ☺️
You could probably use lion's mane mushrooms in place of crab, because then it'll still taste like crab, but still be vegetarian. Lion's mane mushroom tastes like crab when it's cooked, but it's also really good for you... There are also other mushrooms that taste like seafood in general...
