      Best of luck my friend. One word of advice is do not go to big/too many head right off the hop, and make sure not to select any old cows or bulls. Make sure they come from good stock/genetics. This will ultimately determine the success of your new venture.👍🏻 Keep in touch and cheers 🍻

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch

      Thank you Ryan. Water is huge can make life real difficult if you don't have a gameplay and you are also absolutely right. Gains will be greatly decreased if they aren't getting sufficient clean water.👍

    This man is way to happy to be in cattle. My grandpappy was never happy especially when we had to mess with the cows. When I was little I was deathly scared of the huge cows I was like 3 ft tall probably 5 maybe 6 years old and that old man told me "climb over that fence and help me bc I'll hurt you worse then any of the cows can" well... I didn't belive him I ran full sprint away and the old man cleared a 5 ft tall gate and had me chased down and "blessed" me w a bright red ass (as he worded it 😂) i was carried in against my will but in the first 30 seconds I realized they were more scared of him then I was. And as long as he was within arms reach I was safe and looking back I'm sure every single cow hated me with a passion and vowed to murder me the first time I ventured into their territory without pappy having my back that man was my mf hero (that occasionally beat my ass and called me out on my bullshit, and I wished everyday he was still around to whip me back I shape he always told me "when you get older you'll thank me for this whippin" right before he tore into me. Yeah I'm getting into cows now hope this goes better then the chickens ☠ 😬

      @PrairieSunsetRanch I'm now a subscriber 👍I used to raise beef over in the Willamette Valley in Oregon until I moved to central California for family reasons. I can't stand it here, now I work nights on the loading docks, while working I I dream about the good ol days farming, growing my own food and raising my own beef, chickens and of course fresh eggs and an amazing vegetable garden. I'd also grow a big lot of sweet ambrosia corn to treat my cows and it was also my favorite. Nothing like sitting around the fire in the evening after a hard day's work.
      I'm working on saving money so I can get back home where I belong. When I get back to that Beautiful green valley that I grew up in and I'm farming fishing and hunting, I'll be in heaven where I belong and that's where I want to raise my Boys. Until then I'll continue watching your videos and counting down the days until I get back home 🏡
      Keep up the great work and enjoy living the good life.
      I sure am homesick.. sorry for the long message, I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoy watching and Learning from you and watching helps ease my mind. I can't wait to get out of this damn city, they won't ever see me again.
      Anyway thanks again from

    What are the financials of your retail grass fed beef? Average price per pound? Processing costs? Shipping?

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bryan. There are lots of costs to factor in to the equation mainly manpower is my biggest hurdle. Constant and significant inflation is continually chipping away at the profit margin. As/if cattle prices get stronger the margin is definitely closing between retailing beef to the public and Live sales. Biggest advantage to this method is having stable and predictable income on what product you are retailing. Sorry but I can’t post my finances on the ole TH-cam 😬😱 Cheers 🍻 Bryan

      Hi Andrea. We honestly didn't start with a lot of money. My wife and I were working and we had a great financial institution that wasn't afraid to back us. We basically took out one large FARM loan which was sunk back into the ranch. We paid for such stuff, as fence posts, wire, fencing staple, electric fencing supplies, and we even bought 420 SHEEP with some of the funds to start off with. There was only around 20 cows left at the farm and we have grown the herd substantially in the past 7-8 years. Now I'm going to be honest as to the fact that the first few years were somewhat of a struggle but we luckily always had enough profit from the LAMB sales to pay our bills off. I also did have an off site job for the first few years to help with the bills. We are now transitioned from sheep to Cattle as we find the cattle a little less labour and depending on the year they reap larger benefits and better cash flow at least on the normal years. LOL 🤣 Hope this answered some of your questions and Cheers 🍻 Andrea.

    Lots of good information there fella! It's an all year around lifestyle commitment! One that i personally love, it's very rewarding and very frustrating at the same time! i like your tip about finding markets other than just the sale barn, i kind of got into that a bit this year with selling beef off the farm, well from the butcher i guess, need all kinds of permits and licenses to sell it off the Farm, but its definitely worth it! Keep up the videos man, i love your enthusiasm! haha

    I have thousands of feet of fence to put up to start my farm. Don't have an "open" budget as some folks. Would a combo of barbed wire/ electric fencing with metal and wooden posts be a good idea and sustainable long term?

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as you have insulators on the hot wires and it’s grounded well you should be fine. Make top wire hot, next wire barb then another hot wire, then barb under that and you should be golden. I can’t see the mixing of wooden and metal posts an issue at all as long as the wooden posts are in the ground far enough. Some of our old wooden fences are probably 30 years old however they are pressure treated. 👍

    Is it best to start with more calves than steer and Heffers or vice versa?

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You get more $ per LB for Steers at Auction as they are desired by buyers to fatten up in their feed lots. However if you are growing your Herd it’s nice having a Good selection of Open or un-bred Heifers to pick from for Replacement and for increasing your Herd size. Typically once calving season is all wrapped up it usually ends up Half Bull calves/steers(castrated bull calf) and Half Heifers or very close to 50/50. Hope this answers your question kind of! 🤣🤣 Cheers 🍻 from PSR👍

  • @triciahill216

    Does your bull get ornery when separated from the cow herd if you do that to control calving season? If so, how do you move your fence and remain safe doing so?
    A local farmer was recently killed by his “safe” bull when rotating his cattle. I’m looking for suggestions as to how we can rotationally graze our two bulls (move the temporary polybraid daily) from March 1 to July 1 (when separated from the cow herd) and not get in harms way? Thank you.

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly Tricia it depends on the amount of area and your pastures acreage. However a possibility would be to have a small square holding area cordoned off with corral panels, or those big free-standing mobile steel panels. This area could be used for a temporary holding area and have gates on each side or something similar. You could have a grain feeder in the middle of the holding area to lead or bring the bulls in for some type of grain ration, and a nice hay/alfalfa bale etc. You could then lock them in there until you have your new portable fence up on the new pasture area. This is just an idea however it really depends of where and what type of area you are rotating. Hope this helps my friend and feel free to hit me up with any more questions 👍🏻

    Great video. How are the finances of cattle ranching for a small set-up? How do you even compete with the big boys? I know you touched on that a bit but there must be a tipping point where it simply isn't worth going smaller.

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest it's not really the "BIG" guys you are competing against. If your fellow cattle rancher is doing decent typically you are too. Our biggest hurdle or problem right now is the pace at which inflation and input costs are rising. Even though cattle prices are good it doesn't touch the HUGE increase in operating expenses or inflation over the last couple years, especially in regards to the agricultural/cattle industry. Now this scenario almost makes a small producer have to increase herd numbers/go larger or get out of the industry all together. Hope this kind of answers your question my friend and Cheers 🍻 from PSR.

      A calf doesn’t consume near the forage that a Cow producing milk for her calf has to, so I would not necessarily call a calf 1 full cow unit. I had to shop around and purchase private health benefits through a local well known company but this can be a challenge if you are self employed. Do keep in mind I’m in Canada 🇨🇦 so it can be different depending where you are. I find it fairly reasonable as I do have Dental, health and everything covered. Probably best to shop at least a handful of companies so you get a a good range or feel for cost to make sure it’s affordable. Make sure to let them KNOW exactly what you need for your son as I am sure they have clauses etc that may not cover all expenses which in that case you will have to tag that coverage onto your plan. You definitely don’t need any surprise medical bill after a visit to a facility. All the best my friend and feel free to message me with any questions. Cheers 🍻

    • @PrairieSunsetRanch
      @PrairieSunsetRanch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually worked EMS for the first 3 years of my farm journey. We started out with 420 breeding sheep/ewes. Things were hectic especially when we had 500+ lambs on the ground alongside the ewes.😱 But we made it work as the sheep paid off a fair chunk of our loans for equipment such as our baler, & my John Deere loader tractor. It truly was a balancing act for the first few years. We used Farm Credit Canada for majority of our larger funding such as for land. They are very easy to deal with and we basically setup a payment plan on the Months when we have money rolling in from the livestock sales. Everyones schedule and lifestyle is different so I would suggest you try to stay in EMS/Fire for the first little while as it is nice to have that financial security during start up. Start up can be scary and intimidating however once you get going it is a truly amazing feeling. Start small and progress from there according to your conditions. Cheers 🍻 & chat again soon Vance.

      That is a fantastic idea👍🏻. Work with what you have, and from what I heard minis can be very productive. What I would do is make one Large perimeter fence. Then have some portable Poly wire fencing, Electric solar fencer, and temporary insulated posts and rotate them every 2-4 days depending on how large of an area they are grazing. Don't leave it too long as they will overgraze certain areas not allowing it to recover properly for the next time through the rotation. Rotation is the key to healthy land, & healthy growth of both the plants & Livestock. This method will also decrease your animals worm loads as you are constantly moving them to fresh ground. Once the cattle are trained it should be fairly easy and straight forward. Cheers 🍻 & let me know if you have any more questions 👌. Keep me updated my friend.

      @@PrairieSunsetRanch A Branham mix. They are on range grass; however, I'm building a corn fodder system to feed them microgreens for added protein.

      Very cool 👍. Im gonna look up that breed later tonight. Sounds like you have sat down and thought out an excellent feed program for your animals. Keep me posted my friend as I find it very interesting how ranchers maintain their herds in different parts of the world. All the best and cheers 🍻 partner.

      Hi there. We don't believe in pushing or accelerating our livestock growth outside of the natural growth process. My thoughts are slow and steady wins the race. At the end you will have a healthier animal, that will provide you with years of dependable production. Even with our calf background lot we don't feed them overly rich as we find the quality of beef is much more desirable when allowed to grow naturally and as nature intended. Cheers 🍻 from Canada.

    I feel like cows see field fence and just laugh and think how bad can we destroy this and ruin the ranchers day! lol

      LMAO 🤣! Exactly. The cows destroyed 75% of my field fence until I got a SUPER hot TOP wire on it. They don't mess with it anymore during the summer. Probably equivalent to being hit with a lightning bolt ! 🤣🤣 Thanks for dropping by & chat again soon.
