The one thing to consider is that the light leak likely wouldn't be a problem if you used the round ND filters, so I don't really consider that to be a significant issue except if you choose to use a square filter system, but light leaks are concerns (and in some cases, problems) with many square filter systems, especially if they don't employ a type of "hood" design that blocks light leaking from all sides. Personally, I've gone with round filters... the downside is that you have to have the correct size for your lens (although depending on the lens hood for the lens, you can usually go up by bout 5mm without any issues). The primary advantage of square filter systems is you can buy one filter system and a bunch of adapter rings (which are much cheaper, like $10-$20) versus filters for each filter thread size you have. One other thing to keep in mind is that some filters may in fact stop more light than they are advertised. There are some good tests out there that show in some cases, with some filters, a 10-stop may in fact stop more like 10.5 or even 11-stops of light (rarely is it less light, it's usually more, and likely because of the extra coatings on the filter) so that's something to be aware of.
Would be interesting if you could compare both Breakthrough and Nisi, but their round screw-in filters. Because I think that would solve some/all of the light-leak problems as you'd be able to use the lens hood as well with the filters. I think using round filters might tell a slightly different story.
The breakthrough x100 holder is kind of bad, light leaks will definitely happen when using a GND, apparently. People recommend the Benro HF100 which is said to be completely compatible with breakthrough glass.
I need to ask a further question please. You have a lot of filter experience. I have the VND SLR Magic Reflex 62 mm filter, but it doesn't satisfy me and I would like to buy a new VND filter for my GH6 + Leica 12-60mm. Many guys are extremely happy with the VND SLR Magic Reflex, but I am not. Can you recommend a very good VND filter please? I don't know if the Nisi is better than my VND SLR Magic Reflex because there are no comparison tests. Thanks for your advice.
Well done comparison. I use the Breakthrough 10-stop and B+W filters for other stops. I will give further consideration to NiSi in the future. I did not get the sense that you favored either the Breakthrough or NiSi filters and thought you provided a well balanced comparison. Like all such comparisons, there is an assumption that there is no manufacturing variability from one filter to the next of the same type and that may not be the case. While I appreciated the outdoor scenes I've always found them to have variables that are difficult to control, therefore I prefer seeing the images taken under more controlled conditions and for those images I would like to see a sharpness test in addition to the color test. With regards to using the color card, it would have been useful to have identified the RGB values of 3 or 4 color patches with and without the filters. You should assume that the color shifts you saw on your monitor will not be accurately displayed upon recording, processing and compressing the video.
michael brown thank you so much for watching really appreciate the comment. I have to agree with you I didn’t anticipate how much of a difference the video and TH-cam would make to the colours. Something for next time then. I have provided a link to the images so I hope that is useful.
Very interesting well done video! This is off topic, but I’d love to have your thoughts on protective lenses either clear or uv. Do you use them? Do you know any that have a minimal effect on the resulting images? It seems that some of the protective lens lens coatings that combat reflections also increase contrast and color saturation, effects that I’d like to avoid or minimize. The Breakthrough X4 UV is one protective lens I’ve considering along with others by Heliopan, and Zeiss.
I wrote a whole article about UV filters after having detailed discussions with several manufacturers. UV filters are not designed to protect against anything except minor abrasions, dust and particles. They offer no protection of any kind against impact damage. Tests have been done and manufacturers have confirmed this too. I don't personally use them. That seemed a very fair and objective comparison. I don’t know if you’ve tried them but Im very pleased with the Formatt Hitech Firestone filters and I have a couple of the Cokin Nuance filters and I've had zero colour colour cast from them (unlike the standard Cokin). Great video, a definite subscribe.
The smearing in the corners of the Breakthrough filters is a serious problem (in my opinion) that would keep me from purchasing them. Thanks for revealing that. You also demonstrated that the Breakthrough filters are not as sharpe as the NiSi filters and you tried to minimize or gloss over that fact by saying you can add more sharpening. Software sharpening degrades an image and I would prefer to do as little as possible. Even though the NiSi filters have an ever so sight color shift to them I would favor adjusting the color balance of an image over sharpening them everyday of the week. Once you know how much to adjust the color balance you can simply add that amount as an adjustment in LR upon ingesting the images.
The sharpness vs colour issue is more of a personal opinion though. I wasn't trying to gloss over it cause I do call out breakthrough for trying to claim that they're the sharpest filters on the market. I then simply discuss what I value more and what I think is more useful to my workflow. In real world use as I demonstrate they're very close in terms of sharpness and detail. In any case after testing a bunch of filters from a bunch of manufacturers, I've found that Wine Country are quite possibly the best on the market. They have best of both regarding sharpness and colour neutrality. Also due to the vault system light leaks are not an issue with Wine Country. You should check them out.
I am not very familiar with filter holders. What about the light leak? Does not seem like something easily solved in post. Did you have a solution that made the lightleak difference moot?

@@Sondercreative You're welcome dude! Just finished watching your ND vs stacking vid - so i'm definitely going to get one. Would you recommend a screw on filter or a holder that you place the filter into? I'm thinking go for screw on but the biggest size possible and use step up filters to fit the lenses I have?
wait a moment, is that leeds???
Talking about neutral colors without color calibration is garbage. Who needs zero color shift, if the picture is edited for personal taste?
Of course, my monitors are calibrated and I use tools like a colour Checker Digital SG. Having a colour shift is not personal taste, it's a flaw. Editing your images to personal taste is a very different thing to having flaws in the initial image.
Next you'll be saying digital noise in an image doesn't matter if you're going to edit your images for personal taste.
