    You've mentioned several times that you are a C rider. I'd say that completing the Tour of Idaho makes you a solid intermediate (B) rider. :-)

      At the time I finished the TI I was an average C rider at best. However, I came into the TI with years of self-supported/multi-day mountain bike racing. (Google up Tour Divide, AZT, CTR etc.) I leaned heavily on this ‘somewhat’ related skill set to offset my weak dirt bike skills to complete the TI. IE: in comparison - overall preparation is about the same in time and intensity, navigation prep/skill level is identical, TI physical effort about ½ to ¾ the cumulative effort of multi-day mtb racing , daily TI grind is hard but easier overall than 18 hr back to back days on a mtb.
      My real weak spot for the TI ‘was’ my minimal riding skill and resulting lack of confidence. I was under a lot of stress, being solo I was always concerned I would not be able to make some technical section. And after day 6, where I tore my ACL, I could no longer dab with my right leg & my stress level was truly thru the roof.
      At the end of the day one’s skill level on a dirt bike is only ‘one of many’ important factors for a TI finish. All that said I would not recommend a solo TI for the typical C rider.

    Good job on your tour! Looking to do it in 2020. Question, did you change your oil at all during the ride? Thanks

    Marshal, is that the KTM brand clutch cover protector you were able to fit over your rekluse? I'm looking for a protector that will fit over my rekluse brand clutch cover. Thanks!

      yup, its a stock KTM clutch cover, no idea on where you might find something to fit a rekluse cover

      You used a standard cover on a rekluse clutch? Sorry, I’m confused but looking to learn from your setup for my own efforts.

      Any navigational errors or mishaps on the journey? How many downed tree work arounds? I'm teaming up with 2 others to tackle this years TOI, rumors of 250 mile days in the saddle have me concerned..

    • @marshalbird2480
      @marshalbird2480  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZULUink I did not have any navigation issues per say (but I have a lot of GPS backcountry nav/route building experience) Do not take navigation lightly
      Trees: Overall I had to saw about 8 or 9 times. I had to wheelie or skidplate over smaller logs about 30 times, many of these were in a single 8 mile section of single-track that had not been fully sawed. Note: a team of three will most likely saw less and wheelie/skidplate or manhandle over more trees than a solo rider
      You will need to be able to have gas for around 250 miles on some days.
      If you are going to do the TI please --Read read read the motojazz web site, you cannot overdo this part as each tiny bit of knowledge gained from the web site will help you have a fun/successful tour. Remember-to get a finish number you have to not just get to Sundance Mtn but also must understand and then follow “all” the rules discussed in the website 100%--no shortcuts allowed for the route or the rules…….for me reading/study/route building and winter bike prep was a big part of the fun

      Oh, I've visited the site and aware of the rules,It's going to be a challenge. Bike prep as well as physical conditioning among the team members has already started..
      Thanks for the reply, looking forward to more video of your tour..
