After living in countries like China and Japan, I definitely see why TED works so well in India. The complete freedom of speech allowed at TED without any political suppression or social apathy towards important issues always makes me fall in love a little more with India and some of the amazing people that live there.

This video is a true enlightening experience. Now I understand ( a little). Thank you.
It's interesting that both his examples are polytheistic traditions from philosophically advanced cultures. The monotheism of illiterate, superstitious desert peasants - with its ONE God, ONE Truth, ONE Way of Things - is inherently intolerant of intellectual diversity, of any challenges to its authority. And its principal edict is obedience, surrender, submission ("salvation" is offered but as an after-the-fact reward), instead of any kind of human achievement, knowledge or transcendence.
Wow... as someone who doesn't let any chance go off to criticize my own country and its practices, this talk does sets some things in right perspective. Impressed.
Kay Rai "Self-criticism is an art not many are qualified to practice"- Joyce Carol Oates. I don't think it has anything to do with western sycophancy. In fact if you look around the world the less a society/ community/ religion is self critical of itself, less progressive they are.
I think you can't expect everyone whether from western world or eastern world to behave according to their culture. There will always be people who will find it difficult to fit in their own culture.
Yeah, the problem is not in being critical, of one self, ones culture or ones country. the problem arises when you criticize something without even attempting to 'understand' it.
This is the best talk on resolving or explaining the East West separation. This is the crisis of human doing bodies and human being energy that sustains life. What a great time to be alive.
Brilliant....really the explanation of Ganesha story just froze my brain for awhile....👍👍I m contemplating hard on this point alone..thank God you taught mythology to yourself...it is a true labor of love and we see it in your wonderful work... inspired me to learn and love my culture in a real sense
"An assumption develops that you cannot understand life and live life simultaneously. I do not agree entirely. Which is to say I do not exactly disagree. I would say that life understood is life lived. But the paradoxes bug me, and I can learn to love and make love to the paradoxes that bug me. And on really romantic evenings of self, I go salsa dancing with my confusion."
I think the Climatic condition is the most imp factor in shaping of cultural belief system. In most of the comfort zone climate of world, civilizations with spiritual belief system have evolved. while civilization with difficult climate zone have materialistic belief system ....I think Ultimately spirituality is the final comfort for human soul.
yep, interestingly all abrahamic faiths evolved in desert one after the other. they have quite materialistic, definite & strict view towards life while faiths from the old world are pretty lenient that way.
In life, nothing is true or false. It is what you see and depending on your interpretation. You may think that you are right but others may see as totally wrong. We do not live in one world but many worlds, each and everyone of our worlds.
my commentators here.... if you scroll through each others comments you will realise that you are proving him correct, especially with regards to subjective belief.... how can you twist things if there is no prescribed right way... there is your truth, there is my truth... as to the universal truth, there is none
Yes he is... I will share a quote by Mahatma Gandhi which will help making things clear... "A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work - he is the purpose of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to serve him. - Mahatma Gandhi"

For all those people who hates him, He is not manipulating or twisting anything.. Long time ago people were actually smart to understand all these myths and philosophy, but now people are making them history and legends.. He is breaking it down step by step for our foolish little brains to understand
there is no such thing called philosophy in Indian culture ... philosophy is a western concept because it comes from morality and morality brings dogmatic religions ... indians always focused on consciousness and experience
Joseph Raj. Brilliant little talk. Every one lives by a myth. After so many years, I have understood the meaning and purpose of darshan, and the significance of unblinking eyes, the large eyes and tens and hundreds of eyes seen in the deities. Life is cyclical, not linear. A lot of food for thought.

this is a great lecture on the culture and belief systems of the east/west and how it affects us. Very eye opening. Human beings should learn to take best of both worlds, rather than argue which is better.
We Indians should give up constructs derived from western popular culture . Eg YOLO ( you live only once ), RIP etc coz we basically have more complex, more profound systems for understanding consciousness . :p
@Wreck Tangle you are a smart person. I don't agree with him either. We should at least understand every culture, believing is a different thing but should at least try to understand other cultures too

An answer to this would also be: 'it depends... on the context, amplitude and frequency of head shaking'. In some parts of the country, it is 'yes' as you must have observed with some people. In other parts, it is not specific. Slow and high angular amplitudes represent a naive but definite yes. Slow, staggering, and relatively small amplitudes represent 'may be'. Faster and smaller amplitudes represent 'yes', with respect. But I am also aware of the fact that these are general guidelines, but you might come across some people, whose gestures do not exactly mean what I mentioned. The context-based meanings can be derived only with experience. :)
Great Work Devdutt...what we need is a rational thinking of west combine with great philosophical thinking of east.... this will create the best breed of men on this planet.
When talking about "who is right?" he says something very important: that RELIGIONS are HUMAN CONSTRUCTIONS. His talk is about different beliefs so we cannot find fault about his subject. It's not about which belief is right, it's about believing something, anything, without experiments and evidence. Whatever happened to the commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, rather than faith and mysticism, in seeking solutions to human problems.
@Mishkafofer Many ppl have already done that, they changed to Christianity to circumvent this issue of caste. Indian constitution grants the power to choose any religion a person wishes.
"depending on the context, depending on the outcome, choose your paradigm"... A very subjective take on the pros and cons of a subjective vs objective culture. A take that could only be honestly espoused by one who holds to a subjective paradigm, that truth is not absolute, someone who holds to an objective paradigm would say that there is a correct and incorrect answer... Therefore, your choice is inevitably directed by the worldview you have already chosen... Making your basis for that choice... OBJECTIVE? SUBJECTIVE? I believe we have reached a logical paradox.
useful to others in what way? people being told they are right in their feelings wont change what they feel. no one wants to rob you of your emotions but to play at understanding for emotional reasons helps no one but yourself, and only in the most narrow way.
I think Indian culture should become a part of school subjects in schools and colleges and should become a part of extensive research. I personally think we should not take all Indian aspects as a discarded aspect and need to know the real implications behind these things. There are many things in Indian culture which people takes as a sin, but those things have been followed for 1000s of years here, so I think there should be some point in it, and I think those things should be taken in a positive way and discover something in it.. This aspect can be great for us to study and for whole humankind.
What postmodern totter I do business with India on a daily basis, and there's no problem with operating an institutional, standardised, process oriented business there! The West used to be as Devdutt said as well, until the advent of mass production, which saw productivity sky rocket, but required huge standardisation. This is why we see rising incomes in India today; standardisation, process and specialisation. Albeit slowly.
These are some of the things in Hinduism that might interest you :- 1.The very first misconception about Hinduism in the West -"Hinduism is a religion ". Honestly There is no mention of the word "Hinduism" /"Hindu" in any of our Religious scriptures. The reason is the word "Hindu" refers to the people living beyond the River Indus. It was a geographical reference rather than religious given by the Greeks. "Hinduism" was first used by British. 2. The second misconception is Hinduism has 33 million Gods. Well we don't have 33 million Gods rather we have 33 million ideas/concepts/traditions/beliefs/ways to attain salvation - You see contrary to Abrahamic religions which basically says "Our God is the one true God". Hinduism is much more inclusive in nature. There are no set of commandments /Rules in Hinduism. You see if you have a new thought/idea/philosophy about life you may very well present it to people and people are free to follow your ideas. Bravo! Your philosophy is included in Hinduism and thats how you become a Hindu. Congratulations. And that's the reason Hinduism is still evolving/changing according to time. We abolished a lot of bad stuffs in our religion ex-sati practices, child marriage, widow remarriage, casetism etc. You now ask me then how come Islam which came to India in 12th century AD was not accepted as part of Hinduism, after all it was just another wonderful idea? Well, the Invaders invaded India from North west and forced Indians to accept Islam. Either you choose Islam/Death. Their philosophy "My God is the Only God" was just not acceptable by the Indians who never knew that sort of traditional. And Christianity came to India in a time when British ruled India. The British govt supported Christian Missionaries and inserted laws like -If you're non Christian you have to pay taxes, if you convert to Christian you can inherit your ancestral property & can get subsides from govt during floods & drought. Such ideas just didn't work in India. I'm sure if they had come as just another tolerant philosophy with their heads held high, the scenario could had been different. 🙏🙏🙏
Wow, you described it so amazingly. Exactly it's polytheistic. Hinduism accepts every good/positive thought and idea. There are so many topics which we think are starting to be accepted during this era but if we look back at the mythological stories, they were already initiated. just like gender variation which can be seen in the Mahabharata (shikhandi), celebrating feminism, equality of women(shiv Shakti) etc...so it actually has already been in the roots, at least god respected them but the challenge was to make common people understand. And with time it is happening. It's just that there were people who didn't understood the correct concept of Hinduism and presented it in a wrong way (pseudo concept) which eventually gave a wrong image of Hinduism. It teaches love, equality, positivity, karma, dharma, peace, compassion, kindnesses, humanity, bhakti, nature, knowledge, acceptance of good and destruction of evil but many started presenting it as egoism, superiorism, dominating, aggression (the hindutva concept). And after reading what you said about the forcefuly imposed religion by the Islam and others i think hindutva is doing the same thing and Hinduism doesn't preaches forceful imposition.
@@Su_y2025 I really don't know what "Hindutva" means.Honestly as a child I never ever heard the word "Hindutva" nor my Grandpa /my parents ever spoke to me on this. And I don't comment on things I don't know. So before I proceed lemme be clear ->I don't know the real meaning of "Hindutva". But The way Hindutva is projected nowadays is totally propaganda based for political reasons. And I would like to point out Its not the first time, In 1875 Dayanand Saraswati founded Arya Samaj -His vision of India was of an united India -free from foreign rule, with Arya Reglion as the religion of India. Arya Religion was based on classless & casteless society.Besides all the Humanitarian works of Arya Samaj like to stand against caste system, child marriage, demanded women empowerment etc (Which is Appreciated ),it also started Shuddi (Purification movement) ->Converting Muslims &Christians converts back to Hindus. So to counter Arya Samaj Ahmadiyya movement was started by Muslim Nationalist. Later Lala Lajpat Rai also joined Arya Samaj. In the 1930s, when the Hindu Nationalist group,RSS grew in prominence in Northern India, they found support from the Arya Samaj. Truth is Arya Samaj, RSS & Hindu Mahasabha all supported Partition. The way Pakistan became an Islamic State similarly these people wanted India to be a Hindu Rashtra. But since INC Had the people's voice & support India was declared a Secular Country. (From 1920s till Independence INC worked under Gandhian Principles which always advocated a Secular State). So basically it's a long History 😃

(Actually I think a number of Indians have ALREADY made the synthesis, and we are lagging here in America and Europe.)
philip glass and shankar
i feel it is opposite, i think he was trying to say that an indian is never sure because there are thousand possible outcomes of what can be right or wrong. and if you know your actions are going to catchup in your next life then you will behave properly.
But things are changing now, the country atleast in the cities are becoming more western.

Have you guys heard of half-baked-truth & presenting one-side-of-the-story. This is what this is all about. Obviously, we all know now, about the real numbers which can be, so many, between the binary zeros & ones, which of course is, BUT the truth even in the western mathematicals. You should hear about the rest, of the incident of Alexander, after coming to India and meeting the so-called Gymnosophist. Very interesting about how someone who is so methodical & barbaric(to say) in having to conquer so many lands/kingdoms, with so many wars, would just return back from India, after meeting a Gymnosophist. Obviously, he has had a taste or experience of/for something for having to fall-back and away, from something that his mom had ingrained in him and having to have the rock roll back !
This guy is a genius. I've been fumbling around with these questions in my mind for so long now, and he puts it so succinctly. How great is it that this man is spreading this message. South Asians find it very difficult to make cold decisions because it excludes other people and hurts them, very true.

I love an indian accent. It's so quaint and bird like, I find myself mesmerized and charmed. I am so bored and unchallenged by my western culture, there's nothing new to discover. I'm thankful now TED brings these talks from another place that charms, informs and touches the soul. I feel revived.
After living in countries like China and Japan, I definitely see why TED works so well in India. The complete freedom of speech allowed at TED without any political suppression or social apathy towards important issues always makes me fall in love a little more with India and some of the amazing people that live there.

As a process owner and trainer, watching this video, I was able to understand the language I need to engage my audience in India. Working in a mega corporatiomn for nearly 30 years whose workforce is a true melting pot of cultures and beliefs I have learned that there is always a reason for the way people act.
You should watch again from 16:55 onwards.
Clarity of his thoughts and ease of deliverance were mesmerizing indeed thank you Devdutt
This is one of the best TED talks of all time. This is brilliant.
at the end of the video i had to give the guy a standing ovation

Wow... as someone who doesn't let any chance go off to criticize my own country and its practices, this talk does sets some things in right perspective. Impressed.
Are you some white washed wannabe???
Kay Rai "Self-criticism is an art not many are qualified to practice"- Joyce Carol Oates. I don't think it has anything to do with western sycophancy. In fact if you look around the world the less a society/ community/ religion is self critical of itself, less progressive they are.
I think you can't expect everyone whether from western world or eastern world to behave according to their culture. There will always be people who will find it difficult to fit in their own culture.
@@Avi0232 the idea of progressiveness is subjective
Yeah, the problem is not in being critical, of one self, ones culture or ones country. the problem arises when you criticize something without even attempting to 'understand' it.

Brilliant....really the explanation of Ganesha story just froze my brain for awhile....👍👍I m contemplating hard on this point alone..thank God you taught mythology to yourself...it is a true labor of love and we see it in your wonderful work... inspired me to learn and love my culture in a real sense
instead of listening BABA i prefer to listen this man. HE IS THE morden GURU of mythology. gooood man .keep it up.
maya n...... Hinduism is not mythology
maya n... He quoting Hinduism in wrong way by saying myth.... Basically Hinduism is based on science, philosophy, mantra, yog etc
Mindra rules he has also his own view about "what is mythology "plz plz plz fellow him properly.
Not soul. Body
yep, interestingly all abrahamic faiths evolved in desert one after the other. they have quite materialistic, definite & strict view towards life while faiths from the old world are pretty lenient that way.
In life, nothing is true or false. It is what you see and depending on your interpretation. You may think that you are right but others may see as totally wrong. We do not live in one world but many worlds, each and everyone of our worlds.
That statement itself is false.
I like the talk, because he doesn't say that religious belief is a prerequisite for living in a myth, he says that everyone lives in a myth.
He is the rare intellectual minds we are privileged to have. Loved this talk sir 👍
my commentators here.... if you scroll through each others comments you will realise that you are proving him correct, especially with regards to subjective belief.... how can you twist things if there is no prescribed right way... there is your truth, there is my truth... as to the universal truth, there is none
are you stating that the only universal truth is that there is no universal truth?

this is a great lecture on the culture and belief systems of the east/west and how it affects us. Very eye opening. Human beings should learn to take best of both worlds, rather than argue which is better.
Where are you from
We Indians should give up constructs derived from western popular culture . Eg YOLO ( you live only once ), RIP etc coz we basically have more complex, more profound systems for understanding consciousness . :p
We also have same type of philosophy in India also Sage Charbak is an example of that. I urge U to learn about his philosophy.

The Best Ted Talk ❤❤
12 years ago, it seems I incorrectly interpreted the Indian headshake as "yes". That explains a lot.
I've really liked both of these TedTalks from TEDIndia... This one as well as the one regarding the 6th Sense Technology
Great Work Devdutt...what we need is a rational thinking of west combine with great philosophical thinking of east.... this will create the best breed of men on this planet.
You can't explain everything on the basis of rationality

Awesome.. We have gone way bad..
I love to listen to Dr. Pattanaik - a wonderful sense of humor and love for the melodious Bharat that sings below the superficial cacophony of India.
These are some of the things in Hinduism that might interest you :-
1.The very first misconception about Hinduism in the West -"Hinduism is a religion ".
Ok
@@Su_y2025 hindutv is important to stop Islamic terror. In a Muslim majority India there'll not be any democracy or minority.
@@Omkar_93 ------MUSLIMS IN INDIA-----
In 1947 after partition of the Indian subcontinent two countries were created India ( for Hindus) and Pakistan ( for Muslims) but then indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru decided that india should be a secular country. He forcefully putted his own believes on the majority of population without even asking them. He don't even know that secularism can't be one sided. It's like an abusive relationship where wife loves her husband but husband don't. Muslim holy book Quran teach about discrimination against non Muslim people or even killing idol worshippers. Muslim girls can't even marry non Muslim boys. So this kind of one sided secularism is bound to fail because muslim don't even believe in secularism. Didn't we learn from history? Is another partition waiting for us? Because of his Idiocracy we are in this position. Indian muslim's loyalty stands for Saudi Arabia not for india. Why we simply fail to acknowledged this? Indian hindus are tolerant history is a living proof. we wholeheartedly welcomed Persian from Iran ( after muslim conquest Zoroastrian came to india to escape prosecution) we wholeheartedly welcomed Jews from Israel and they completely live in peace in India for many centuries. Their believes don't teach about killing other religious people that's why they are well accepted in India society and they contributed a lot but muslims are different ballgame. They want different laws, they call non Muslims as kafir( inferior). If we don't ask them tough questions then who will? Why we ( left liberals) fear to question them? How long can we tolerate this? If we don't act today then it'll be too late to act in the future.
So what's the solution?
1. Completely ban Madrasa
2. Completely ban marrying 4-5 wives to control the population.
3. Reeducate them like what china is doing. Try to Indianize Islam. Reform the holy book Quran. That's the long term solution.
4. Teach every muslim about APJ Abdul Kalam and his teachings. It'll De Radicalise their thought process and they will try to respect non Muslims.
