  • How do you market your book as an author? I've been playing around with this for a couple of years, and in this video, I'm sharing what I've discovered so far.

I've never marketed or promoted a book but I market and promote my articles on substack as well as my podcasts.
it's quite frankly tiring for me.
I never had to do either of these things when I was a freelance journalist.
However, this is part and parcel of writing these days and I tell writers you have to market and promote. Period. You can't ignore it.
Your recommendation of promoting yourself is a good, solid piece of advice.
I promote myself as a writer only because in my assessment, you have to do so now. Audiences have to be introduced to you even if you have been a writer for 30 years like me.

Your point about branding yourself reminded me of Acura's early days. They discovered people knew what the Legend was, and the Integra, but weren't so sure about what Acura was. So they switched to a letter-and-numbers scheme.

That's so interesting! I'm not familiar with that, but I understand it. Marketing has to be more holistic than a single product.

Very helpful advice. I'm taking notes. Marketing was something I avoided because I don't know what to say, what YT content to make, scared to show myself, etc. Hopefully, by the time I'm ready to attempt re-publishing (self pub is a learning curve) I can follow your suggestions here. I'll definitely buy your book when it's ready. It's great to support growing channels and writers.

Thank you so much! You hit the nail on the head -- all of this has a learning curve! It can be so, so overwhelming. Pick one thing, and start there. Get comfortable. Get confident. Eventually, it'll feel like second nature. I believe in you!!!

Thank you so much! We introverts have to stick together. Alone. In our own homes. :p

Great video, some of your ideas conflict with some other content creators I have seen, but I suspected they were wrong though I was not sure why, but you articulated the reasons very well.

No one is wrong when it comes to publishing. It's all subjective. Publishers just publish books and hope that they sell. They tend to publish books from well-known authors and celebrities because they tend to do well. It's all nonsense.

There was a wonderful time in the past when you could just write a book and have it published by a traditional author. Now you have to write the book, market it and sell it. It is the worst of times.

The barrier to entry is certainly much different. So many writers. SO much content. Not enough agents/publishers.

@@bymegangrant I wholeheartedly agree. That is why I don't write to be published. I write because I love it. I loved writing this. Thank you for replying.
