A tip on using double bladed paddle. the object is to keep as much of the blade in the water as possible. You are holding the paddle with the longest point entering the water first. it should be the other way around also the length of a kayak pedal when used for a canoeis usually quite a bit longer than what it looks like you are using. With a longer paddle, you have a more relaxed stroke with less splashing. Usually much drier for the Paddler too.
Yeah I would just grab paddle and go not knowing there was a top and a bottom. I had someone else let me know. I have a 260 cm paddle and I’m not tall. I also don’t get wet. Thanks for the heads up 👍
We stayed at that site below Basswood on June 9 and 10. Never had a better feeling than coming out of that Canadian portage and seeing that great site open after a very long day of paddling. Fun reliving our trip and seeing that big stump we used to split wood and remembering the great times we had there. We took the long way around through Fourtown because everyone told us the route you took through tin can Mike was too tough. It didn’t look a whole lot tougher than that awful portage between Fourtown and Mudro, but I know video can be very deceptive. Thanks for sharing, great video.
This is a FANTASTIC video! I'm headed to the BWCA for my first trip in two weeks. I'm spending 11 nights, 12 days out there doing a loop from Sawbill up to Little Sag then down to Cherokee. Around 90 miles. Should be a blast. You have a great setup! Subbed. 1:04:00 WOW!!!!
We were at the end of the Echo Trail after fishing opener. Gotta work on that single portage my friend so you take a dog or 2! They don't want us double portaging anymore leaving the food packs out of sight. Bears are stealing food at portages I guess. I did some kayak racing back in the day you're paddling with your paddle upside down. Glad you had a fun trip the Canadian border is one of my favorite spots in the BWCAW 👌
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to single portage. I do have all my food in bear vaults so I’m following the new rule. As far as the kayak paddle I never realized there was a top and bottom. I guess I would just grab it and go not knowing. Now I do so thank you.
I did that loop 35 year's ago, my dad brother and a friend, that portage to gun was a killer i got to carry one aluminum canoe and cooking gear cast iron back then.Damn wish I was still in that kind of shape.
Doing that portage with an aluminum canoe and a pack wouldn’t be fun. When I first started going to the BWCA I would carry my father in laws light weight Grumman which was like 74 pounds. Can’t imagine caring that on that portage. So glad there’s Kevlar canoes now. Thanks again 👍
First of all I loved the video. Again, you and a few other have motivated me to do my first solo trip. I have permits for a trip the 3rd week of August. Headed in to target Lake Trout. Then a late trip with the new hot tent in early October Thanks B Mik
@@CommonManCamps-dz6ur I'm already looking forward to your next video. Thanks for getting back about the pant. My concern id for the kayak paddle getting me wet. That's why the water proof question Thanks Mik
If you could find the time what is the brand of your life jacket . great job on the video. I like the idea that you give time to the beautiful area thanks again
we entered the bwca on june 30th at saganaga lake for a roundtrip to alpine lake, south knife lake , hanson- and ester lake and along the border around american point back to were we started. 11 days of superbe, lazy canoeing. sunshine, rain, wind (and bugs) all you need for a good trip. we came all the way from switzerland to do this nice trip. our 5 canoe trip in the bwca!
Thats amazing and to have done it 5 times. 11 days would be fun to do. I get to go on multiple trips a year but not long trips like you. Glad you enjoy the BWCAW and thanks for watching 👍
@@CommonManCamps-dz6ur coming from switzerland just for a canoetrip anything less then 10 days would be to short! i enjoyed watching you movie. specialy with the knowledge that we may have bumped into eachother on a portage!!!
Nice video. How did you keep the leeches alive doing all that paddling and portaging? Did you have them in oxygen for awhile? You didn't fish until Day 3, so I was curious how you carried them with you in the leech bucket?
I just kept them in the leach locker in the lake. If I’d go to a new lake, I would drain the leach locker and then refill it and just carry it on the portages. I’ve never had problems keeping leeches alive unless it’s very hot out. Thanks for watching hope you enjoyed it👍
@@CommonManCamps-dz6ur Thanks, I meant that I didn't see you clip them to you or anything. You must have carrier them with the pack first, then the canoe
You Northfolk have some beautiful country. Awesome video.
Thanks 👍

Great trip!!! Are you interested in trying out a new style of portage pack?
I’m always interested in new gear. Especially if it’s Minnesota made.
Got a question. I'm totally not familiar with this type paddling. What does that load (barrel and boat) weigh on portaging?
Barrel is 45 pounds or so and canoe with fishing poles and paddle around 35 pounds. It is a beautiful area. Thanks for watching 👍
A new common man outro
Oh yeah, you betcha
What brand of brown pants are those? Are they water proof?
Thanks

Sorry I was on another trip and just got back. They are Fjall Raven pants. No not water proof but dry quick

In fact, all the extra leeches are at the cabin in the lake and I plan on using them on the next trip.
