  • Update
Use RTV Silicone Instead of the grease
Cost like little over $8 link below
    shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/p...
Why; because after a long while (about a month) of driving the Noise comes back with the grease
I show how to get rid of the knocking shuttering noise most Toyota Camry make when you go over 60, or press the brake after do 60 or just even hitting a bump
It's not a hard job it just take a lot of parts to come off just to get to it which I show you how, inorder to save you over $700

To be able to deliver such a high-quality instructional video from the parking lot of an auto parts store is most impressive. Well done, sir! You saved me $700.

You don't need to remove the column from the shaft! Just follow these instructions, lower the entire column leaving the steering shaft attached. With a slight rotation will come down far enough to easily get the three bolts off to remove the motor. Vacuum out the old pieces, install new part and reverse everything. Also, the black plastic air vent doesn't just pop off...it broke one of my clips. Use a small flat screwdriver on the very top of the plastic vent you will feel a slot, pry gently up and the part will release.
Otherwise, all his instructions are spot on. Thanks for making this it really helped me especially seeing how each electrical connector came off. I completed in about 2 hours going very slow.

This guy saved me so much money. After being told it was the suspension, then intermediate shaft, and then tire rods, I stumbled across this video. I bought the part for $5 from Toyota and did it myself. Hardest part was taking off the air vent but other than that took me 4hrs and got an alignment afterwards. Thank you so much for a great video and saving me so much money

The rattle noise was driving me crazy. It sounded like it was coming from behind the instrument cluster. I followed the instructions in the video, and when I opened the motor, sure enough, green plastic pieces were everywhere. Cleaned and greased. Put back together, and noise rattle is gone. Heck of a mechanic. Great video.

Dude! Fantastic video! This noise has been driving me nuts ever since I bought my '17 Camry 4 years ago. I JUST figured out it was the steering column yesterday and as soon as I searched 'steering noise' instead of 'dash rattle' your video came up. Mad props for your skill and knowledge and for filming the entire process. As others have said HUGE bonus for doing it in an auto parts store parking lot. A+ !!!

Great video, I just did this job today in my shop. Instead of using the grease or silicone, you can just buy the new bushing for $17.00. The grease will push out and the silicone you will have to wait for it to set up and cure before using it or it will be a short term fix because the clearance will push out again. I shortened the entire process. I pulled the covers and removed the air con vent. That was the hardest part of the job. I disconnected the two wires on the right side by the vent that he shows in the video and pulled the black loom out of the connecter at the same place. the whole assy will just drop to the floor at that point. You don't need to disconnect any of the wires going to the steering wheel or remove the steering assy from the car. Just undo the four veritical 12mm mounting nuts and set the unit on the floor board. Unbolt the three bolts he shows in the video remove the wore out damper and replace. I love watching these videos J C it was the only one out there that let me see where all of the components were before I got into it.

Another option could be to replace the damper part. It is officially called “DAMPER, ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR SHAFT” with the part number 4525428040 corresponding to Camry LE 2012-2017. MSRP from the official Toyota Parts website at the time of writing this is $6.09.
Same part number fits many other Toyota non-Camry models from 2012 up to at least 2022. Just in case, don’t blindly trust me and buy the same exact part before making sure on the website it is compatible with your car’s model/year. I’m just a stranger on the internet sharing what helped me find the part for my car.

Hey there, I’m having a similar issue, everything suspension wise looks good underneath the car, and the video would make sense for what sound is coming from my steering wheel, except that I don’t know what part specifically, I am trying to fix or what it is called. The sound gradually gets louder by the day, is it then unsafe to drive?

Addendum- I do want to warn y’all, I did mess up by snapping a bolt in half bc the nut stripped and I tried using a different nut. On the reenforcement bar column , lucky I had enough bolt left to add another nut to secure it enough, I know I might pay the consequences later, that piece isn’t sold separately it’s 799.00 usd. Great video man. I just completed this and it went pretty well. Mine had a couple wire harnesses (blue sheathing) that attached to the back of the steering motor parts but no problem popping those off. Crazy kudos for doing that in the parking lot, cause I was flopping all over the place trying to get my head down under there to see things. Thanks for saving us all a pile of money. As a side note to others attempting it you don't have to disconnect the motor bit from the steering column (the universal joint part) he only did that so he could show us the motor part better. It lowers down enough once you get to that point you don't have to take it off to still easily access the motor.

They had a partial remedy with lithium grease syringe to reintroduce lubricant into the small u-joint. Instead Toyota replaced the shaft with a redesigned shaft/u-joint and I was happy since I didn’t have to pay for parts/labor. I’m surprised you didn’t use lithium grease on that gear though. Are there any Toyota TSBs on this matter/procedure? You should make it a practice to look into TSBs since they often offer a remedy recommend by the manufacturer.

I just want to say a huge THANK YOU for posting this video! My daughter's car is the exact same year, make, and model and also had this same annoying rattle under the dash and steering column. I had already replaced the worn out stabilizer bar links which did not help with this noise. I found your video, ordered the $4 damper part from my local Toyota dealership and spent today fixing it. No more rattle. Yay! Your video was very clear and well made for being able to follow along. Oddly enough, out of all the steps, the one that took me the most time (and cuss words) was taking off and putting back on the stupid AC duct. Its 3 clips are hard to reach and they are non-intuitive to remove. Spent over a half hour just on removal and reinstall. Anyway, your video was a Godsend to us and I want to extend my gratitude for you for taking the time to record it, edit it and share it.

Hey I appreciate it and I almost didnt post the video because it took bout 3 times to take it all apart just to get enough content the first time I was like it had couple unexplained gaps and I really wanted every one to understand that they can do it. And that A/c vent lol I almost broke mine off but since I knew I was being watched I just had to be patient

I did the grease it didn't work...so I quickly replace with the RTV silicon...now it has reduced...but I think I need to take it apart tomorrow and add more silicon...because I cannot wait for the arrival of the damper here in Lagos.Nigeria.

Hey JC Mech Scott - thanks for this, I've got 2013 Prius with the rattle, been scratching my head about what it could be - can't be rattle in solid steering linkages, because no play at all in wheel, and when rattle started about 10k miles ago, couldn't produce it by wiggling wheel (turning) back and forth (now I can).
This is a great lead (!), and offers possible explanation for my problem - as in your case, rattle/play might be in power assist motor engagement with steering mechanism.
When I first listened and you went for grease, my first question was "did it last?" (grease will degrade...) -- saw the answer later. I like RTV idea, but like replacing part even better - silicon won't be too happy with grease around (need super clean surface to adhere well), and silicon will tear apart easily.
I'm gunna check out Prius configuration and see if this could be it for me also.
    Very nicely done!

Hi, first of all, thanks for this awesome video.
Second, I wanna ask if the silicon is good there?
Because it seems that the two pieces of plastic between the green gasket parts dose not need to be as one piece and that what the silicon makes it as one. What am I missing?
