I grew up right by where that old H&NW line came up the Hamilton escarpment. By then the tracks were all gone and converted into a recreational trail, which I went for walks on all the time with my parents and childhood friends. I ALWAYS wondered what it would've been like when it was an active rail line with trains coming through. Needless to say I just ordered this DVD.
LOVE those old "A" cab F's! As a retired engineer, I spent many hours in the "A" cabs on the B&M here in the north country of NH and VT. Need to order your cd's I guess!
Mr. Knows: When I run for Prime Minister I promise to bring the caboose back to every train in the country. I will also get rid of MASH on every Canadian TV too! Hope to get your vote!!
A master mechanic in Hamilton was a fan of these units and had sets brought in Then one day an engineers from TO failed to put the K-2A in passenger lap position on the trailing unit which resulted in flat spots on the unit
Three of these former CN units found there way working on the Carolina Southern Railroad in Conway SC. One eventually was used for parts and the other two just got sold and are going to be refurbished. I got the pleasure of actually riding in 9163.
lawbench191 my uncle remembers working around them in the 80s because if they didn't get there speeder off the track in time the crews would toliet paper them oh those seemed like such fun times -hello from Saskatchewan
I never really appreciated the FUnits . Uts fun to see a CN with more than two units on each train. Train watching was so much more exciting. Back then even the cars were painted with an insignia. Now its a train with 2 engines that are the same , 100 black tanker cars or 100 grey grain cars ---- and no caboose. Boring
great f units.we do not have such classics in England only model ones made by triang-hornby. but its better than nothing.love the old caboose.keep up the good work
The unit seen at 3:56? CN 9166 ~F7Au, class GFA-17a ~rebuilt from 9110 June 1973 ~modified for snowplow service in southern Ontario by providing removable steel grill for the windshield and covers for the roof-mounted radiator fans ~retired 4 December 1989 ~disposition unknown
In another video about oil trains, there is a "spacer car" that separates the engines from the tank cars in case something catastrophic happens. Since these are steel trains, the caboose probably serves as a "spacer" from the steel bars in the case of a wreck and they don't quite impale the engines a/or crews. Less costly to replace a caboose than an engine.
This original footage was shot on Beta-1 and Beta-2 tape formats, Beta which became other formats as well--(betamax, ED Beta, then ultimately Professional Betacam) was actually a superior format compared to VHS for a number of reasons. We transfer the footage via analog thru high end equipment with time base correction and digital noise reduction. The transfers are real time, then once in Digital format you can do almost anything with the footage quite easily!
Thanks very much for the heads up Joe, we will keep an eye on this guy, no he did not have permission, if he does more of our videos we will have to report him to TH-cam!
I don't think he has any more of your videos, but he has uploaded lots of content without permission from many other railfans. He did this with my friend's video when he got lucky enough to film a train accident, and that's why I'm telling the rightful owners. I'd recommend reporting him.
@@joesniffin8829 Thanks again Joe, We will revisit this and probably report him since he seems to do this quite often as you mention, not a trustworthy person for sure!

I did see some action on this line in the early 70s growing up in Hamilton.
Also TH&B still in operation before CP take over.
What did H&NW stand for?
CN has the best paint scheme of any railroad in the world I think so anyways 🔥
F units Canadian safety cabs, mlw’s, and cabooses pure heaven.
The F Unit is one of my Favorite Especially the CN Zebra Striped!!

Love those old trains, I also miss the caboose...
moses knows me too and I miss steam trains 🚂
I never saw the caboose including the freight train in real life before, but I see them at Riverhead where the train museum is whenever I drive by
Mr. Knows: When I run for Prime Minister I promise to bring the caboose back to every train in the country. I will also get rid of MASH on every Canadian TV too! Hope to get your vote!!
Had to watch again! Great video
That is quite a lash-up of units at 3:42.
Bill rouleau rare to see CN with more than two Units at anytime
A master mechanic in Hamilton was a fan of these units and had sets brought in Then one day an engineers from TO failed to put the K-2A in passenger lap position on the trailing unit which resulted in flat spots on the unit
The one"s I remember as a kid in NJ-I lived in a rail road town, had rolling head lights.
I give this video an F for F-Units !!! Awesome video!
I'm surprised that they where still using these into the late 80's
yooooo wassup smt
@@ajstevenson4181 Aye!

Great video of the old F units a classic ! Excellent in cab view !
Great video. Get's one nostalgic.
I have the F unit video, great stuff.
Found this video on my twitter account so glad I found it! Great video of the F units!
Very nostalgic! Great video!
love the Ferguson avenue running footage
great f units.we do not have such classics in England only model ones made by triang-hornby. but its better than nothing.love the old caboose.keep up the good work
Sad a lot of these units got scrapped
would n t it have been nice to go for a cab ride like this on the Union Pacific streamlined passenger trains
These could do some serious freight hauling on any railroad had they survived today!
Actually they do! Believe it or not on the OSR
1:27 love those horns
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing!
That's my favorite train, I love the F7s locomotives.
Nice DVD to buy for soon,I hope to see the 9171 F-unit
Mr Flightfan
At 3:56 you see I beleive is #9156. It was outfitted with snow shields for use when in snow plow service out in the western provinces.
I agree Alex! Would have loved to see the Carolina Southern units!
I love those f units !
Sad to see these ribbons of steel were torn out a very long while ago now. Can't even tell any of it was there besides the trail on raymal.
I need to buy this set!
These FL9 diesel locomotives look like the movie Silver Streak 1987
Good music, really fits the theme of 1986.
NIce Video!
rare beast to find active still
RIP CASO all a memory
At 3:45, they had wide cab locomotives back in the 1980's?
Widecabs were first developed in Canada by GMD in 1972.
Wow, Rymal road today sucks compared to this! Best video ever!
Matt L. isn't that road in Hamilton?
What was the middle engine used for (sandwiched between the two F units)?
Wonder why f units aren’t in service that much anymore.
Their age and difficult crew accessibility is the main reason why you don't see them in revenue freight anymore.
Beauty!!
Did the f7s still have the 567 prime movers?
Awesome
The Caboose That Got Loose
3:56: F7 with a dome? Why was designed?
This was cn best in show
LIKE YOUR VIDEOS
3:56 What the heck has happened to that engine?
It was equipped with a steam generator
Those zebras have bloody noses. I hope they get better.
What is that mod on the second locomotive at 3:38?
doanster its a snow cover so when they did plowing work the exhaust fans would be clear
I have a model of one these trains
Alright 1st to comment! Looks like a cool DVD
What was the roof modification on the one F unit in the consist?
*****
steam for sure

traingp7 Winterization hatches
+speedypete99 CN 9166 Is now at NRE With 5 CN HR 616's
Is that an m3h
Why the caboose on both ends?
easier to run the power around and not needing to change the caboose from end to end

+cesariojpn or so the crew doesn't have to move the caboose to the opposite end of the train
how much work was it to convert the video from vhs to digital

Would sooner hear the train instead of , what is that noise, music?
