+TheReIntegration ...I love those f-units too...I used to railfan the crack Santa Fe passenger trains as they passed through Trinidad Colorado on the way up Raton Pass...Super Chief...Chief...El Capitan...Grand Canyon...my brother and I were admiring a set of F7s one day...the engineer leaned out and asked if we would like to come up and look around...we didn't hesitate...climbed up the ladder into a beautiful pale green cab...very clean...the engineer explained the controls and gauges...learned about manual transition that day...what a great experience...still one of my fondest memories 50 some years later...
Paradise Road sad that kind of stuff rarely happens anymore, too many rules and regulations for it to be allowed. Train crews risk losing their jobs if they allow that today.
I am thankful that Bill McClellan and his son Rob took the opportunities to photograph and film the vintage diesels when they were in prime condition. Their photos and films are very valuable today! The diesels in these films are much more pleasing than today's mass-produced junk!
Not all of them. There are several ALCO RS-11s still in service. The ones I know of off-hand being: Shenandoah Valley (Ex-N&W/Ex-Maine Coast) No. 367, Ontario Midland No. 36, Falls Road 1802, and Napa Valley 62. There are also several surviving ALCO S1s in New Hampshire, and multiple GP9s spread across several railways and leasing companies that I'm aware of.
This is a great video. Just unfortunate that they didn’t get up to the real northeast and film lines like the Boston & Maine, Main Central, Bangor & Aroostock and the Green Mountain Railroad. So much history up here in the northeast.
Would have loved to have been around for the classic passenger trains, steam power, and more of the transition. Dad was born and raised in Ashtabula. Grandma was a nurse and grandpa a prosecutor and judge. They knew everyone in town. A neighbor was with NYC. We were taken to the yards, tower, and even taken aboard and permitted to ride on, and operate locos and run with a local freight. We were permitted to (try to) pull the old Armstrongs where the harbor line crossed the NYC. SO COOL
i was born 20 years too late(1969)... just luck enough to catch gp9's in action when i was a kid..the f7's were already gone from the PC western division to peoria,il.
About 2 miles east (in the direction this train is heading) at 2:58 is where the 1953 NYC Conneaut railroad disaster occurred. It still holds the record for the most trains involved in one accident (4). Awful disaster.
The New York Central railroads lightening stripe paint scheme was a lot better looking than that damned ugly cheap cigar band look and their original oval was a lot better looking than the newer ugly oval. When the New York Central went that way, it was the beginning of the end for them prior to becoming the Penn Central in early 1968.
I work for a railroad, those alcos are junk, they slip a lot, and they die a lot of times, ground relay problems, they made good stem locos at 1 time, but thier disels were junk.
Only the best..thank you
Lackawanna, Reading, Lehigh Valley....oh those were the days!!
F series locomotives are the reason why I got into trains. Their design is just timeless.

I wish they would of kept making the f units.
I like F Units but my favorite 1st generation diseasel is the GP7low hood

They might be more aesthetically pleasing, but there were far more of those early diesels mass produced than there are today.
Beautiful just Beautiful
The F units and FA1s are my favorite model of the trains to watch and to draw a picture of
I grew up around Alco T-6's and
Gp 7 and Gp 9's GREAT MEMORIES
Great video thank you
The 1960s-70s was a great colorful time for Railfans of 1st and 2nd Gen. units of the big three EMD, Alco, GE and some FM, Baldwin and Lima.

Great memories of the past!
These colors were great. I loved seeing them in person, but I had a black and white camera, so I could only see the colors in person
Nice collection!
I’m a disbelief you basically telling me that Cleveland was like Chicago with all this commuter rails
like to slide back a few years, and latch on to those Berks.
Priceless.
Not many people like diesels but the ones most of us did like are gone ALCOs, E8s, GP9s, and many others
Not all of them. There are several ALCO RS-11s still in service. Miss those old black and white gates with the pieiting lanterns.

ButThatsShacksTrain love your name to reference emperor of the north
I think this is a lot newer than originally thought. I can see a Penn Central car rack and Penn Central caboose in some of the clips
awesome promo!!!

I was born 25 years to late, dammit.
Would have loved to have been around for the classic passenger trains, steam power, and more of the transition.

I don't see this one available on your website.
Here is the link on our website...www.greenfrog.com/vintage_dies_dvd.shtml
Thank you, not sure why the search on your page could not find it.

I was always sorry I could not get there
Conneaut City still got those steam engines in my blood they're great.
Conneaut is now served by the Norfolk Southern,Known as "The Thoroughbred of Transportation" for years.
Kurt Kauffman and CN who bought bessemer
Imagine all the card games and booze in those cabooses haha
Now we know why the Alcos were called "Honorary Steam Engines" look at the smoke and then compare with the GM F units...
awsome
At 4:03 why didnt he honk at the grade crossing
erie & Lackawanna 3609 looks a lot like ns heritage unit erie and Lackawanna sd45-2 1700
Because 3609 is either an SD or SDP 45.
There's at least 1 NKP steam locomotive still running. The NKP 765
animal16365 No There's two one of them is getting restored
There's a few Berkshires out there 765 763 755 and 757 just to name a few
NKP #759 needs.to be re-returned to fantrip duty!
4:33 what horn is that?
Leslie a200
Track 2 for Capital City
Wasn't Jim McClellan Bill's son? Most of these went on to Conrail!
Thought the Nickel Plate went to Penn Central
Nope. N.w absorbed the nickel plate.
The world then look so colorful and peaceful day another constant reminder why I hate the modern age.
Car at 4.37?
65 Pontiac Catlina.
Where those GP9'S?
1:57 rip polar express
I meant "too late". Sorry, I was crying over what I've missed!
Why Are The NYC FA1s SOO LOUD?
Because they're ALCOs, that kinda goes without saying. Now as for horns, I think the EMD Fs beat the ALCO Fs in that category.
+Russell Streak SO MUCH SMOKE!!!!!!
Classic ALCO power. What else do you expect.
+Russell Streak AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
Embrace the awesomeness that is ALCO's cab units!
upgrading new diesel locomotive engines
Why Wasn't This Filmed By Emery Gulash?
Good catch, thanks for your insight on this, we have corrected this and added Emery Gulash to the descriptions.
Green Frog Prod.
I think that might need to be changed in the actual video. In this preview, the narrator still says Bill McClelin.
All the fallen names. If you don't know another name fell, Providence and Worcester got bought out
They, despite being owned by Genesee and Wyoming, still have an independent identity.

I agree the lighting stripe looked a lot better WPRR mile post 92

derail14 I heard that about their PA locos. Also rushed them so they had a lot of problems. Too bad. Wish Alco were around but that's their own doing

What horn is that?
Sounds like a Nathan P3, same as what SP used on almost everything back then.
