As someone who is about to enter into the world of slide, this answered so many important questions I was wondering about in terms of technique, string action, etc. Thank you!
I asked him two questions at a clinic in Winnipeg about a year ago now, and between the fairly simple questions I asked, I think he spent 20 to 30 minutes answering. Hard not to cheer for a guy like that. Even harder once you've heard him play live. Wow.
Big ups to the engineer who did this! All spot on but most especially to the master db lufs, so nice to not be assaulted by the hype, most appreciated!! And those listeners who are having trouble hearing, give yourself the best gift a musician can receive and pickup some really nice headphones, I promise it will change your life in the most positive and fulfilling way ❤️👨🏻🚀🔥
26:25 "Everyone knows Im a pedal junkie" *cameraman focuses on background displaying Joeys wall of pedals* Thankyou cameraman, you did your thing. Thankyou for showing your skills, that was your time. Round of applause
that is some great real time camera work to focus in on the pedal display on the wall in the background when he says that he is a pedal junkie temporarily blurring him out, ...i would say that that display on the wall qualifies him as a pedal junkie all by itself.
It's wild these guys talk about bottoming out with the slide. My approach was learning on a guitar that was set up for standard playing, medium action and nines. Now you hand me any guitar with elevens in standard tuning and it feels hard to bottom out
Damn, I just found/heard you play and it sounded great but then you started to talk and I was like “FU.K, ITS IN STEREO”. I’m 61 next month, totally deaf in one ear and Nat a great deal of hearing in the other and I’ve just started playing. I bought myself a Legacy resonator and an el cheapo acoustic. Both my brothers play as does my son. So plenty of brains to pick, as well as you tube teachers. Just wish I was able to hear what you say.
and next weeks upload of bizzarro world rev billy f gibbons.... Edit: This was concerning string preferences... THE MOST INTRIGUING STRINGER VID IV EVER SAW. Awesome 👏🏼 interview
@Guitar thank you for making this recording.Going through all the effort of recording the video and audio professionally, then failing to mix the latter professionally, is a bit of a shame!
Hey dude really enjoyed ur vid that last piece u played man it made me go look my slide out oooooohhhhhh it was good plus Thanx for the incouragement and tips. I play low on my guitar and it doesn't work well with slide as u said and it really is discouraging when it don't sound good, al keep plugging away but when people like you are around lol goes round in circles l!
Matt Flickinger find a slide that is comfortable, not too heavy but not too light, will help to keep string noise down and help you get used to the right feel for it. Just like with standard picking, learning to mute the strings you aren't playing helps to keep the licks clean as well
slide guitarist for 5 years now and I honestly cannot play anything on my lowest string. My action is raised and my string gauges are 11's but I constantly bottom out on the lower strings without notes ringing out. whats the deal? Action is raised on both ends of the guitar as well.
That’s funny, I quit playing slide also because of Sonny. I just figured there’s too many slide guys around here already (New Orleans)John Mooney,Sonny Landreth,Anders Osborne. But Duane Allman was my original guitar hero so I finally said f;@k it and went back to slide. Ironic cuz I’m touring with Sonny now.
I would like to ask joey what he thinks about fretboard radius. Which is better? A flatter or rouder, one? And, please, Joey, come to Brazil!! #gayforjoeylandreth
I waited 20+ years to get properly into pedals. Spent most of my playing life with either no pedals or one analog rack reverb/delay. Would sit on top of my old tube combo, the rack had a little spring inside! Delay, 300ms delay time, no subdivisions or tap. Amp gain, two channels, ride the volume & tone pot, split coils - done.
Alright so a fellow slide guitarist here and bouncing back n fourth in terms of string gauges.. right now I use D'idarrio balanced tension strings the heaviest they will start at is 11 and the heaviest string is a 50 but due to my finger strength I have reduced the 50 to a 42 for the low E from the same set. Both of my necks are properly adjusted and all of my guitars are in open E all day everyday so there is no going back n fourth to toy with tension on the neck. In short is this ideal for slide guitar in open E?
I use 11 gauge strings but no matter what I do my bottom strings bottom out because the action is still too low near the nut on my guitars... one is even shimmed up with a bit of card and still my low E string will not ring out properly. Should I just bite the bullet and have someone craft new guitar nuts for both my guitars?
I fret out heavily on the low strings despite having a brass slide they still wont ring out and sound god awful. My action is about as high as it can go without the expensive option of getting new guitar nuts made or bought. Very frustrating
Have you tried just adding a bit more neck relief using the truss rod? It would have the effect of raising all strings. If I were you I would take my guitars to a decent tech and ask them to take a look. Most won't charge for having a look at the guitar to say what can/should be done, some might even turn the truss a little for you for free, but at least you'll know what you're looking at. From what you say - treble strings good but bass fretting out - it could well be a twisted neck, the forces on any guitar neck tend to twist them that way, especially old style single truss rod ones. If you look down the neck and see slightly (or any) more bow on the treble side than the bass that's what it is. That is a pain to fix (it can only be compensated for, really). But bottom line, get it looked at and get more info. An issue with the shape of the fretboard could mean you're wasting money on a new nut.
Fair enough, just a thought. What did the techs say about the nut? From what you say, with the problem being up near the nut, it sounds like that could be it.
for me going up another gauge of string would be grueling for my right hand. I should mention I use a brass slide so the natural weight of the brass adds the pressure I dont have in my hand to consistently keep pressure on the strings without me having to dig into the guitar too much.
I cannot hear this at all. It sounds like whispers. I'd really like to hear this, like, really badly. Any chance you can normalize the audio and reupload? Please?
pretty sure I need a new nut because despite the heavier strings and brass slide I keep bottoming out on the low strings and my action cannot go any higher. damn.
It looks like a shubb capo. You shouldn't need a new nut if you use really heavy strings, in theory. But I have a reverend guitar with a floating bridge that will not downtune without buzz. Even when raising bridge saddles and using fat strings.
So no one has mentioned Shaun Verreault from Wide Mouth Mason as one of the best BEHIND THE SLIDE players!? But Ill have to say this guy is fucking amazing and on same level as Trucks. Top 2 slide players in the world
I’ve heard Joey explain his slide method in every video on TH-cam he’s in, but I keep clicking just to hear him play
Dude, same.
As someone who is about to enter into the world of slide, this answered so many important questions I was wondering about in terms of technique, string action, etc. Thank you!
Joey and Allen Stone should do a song together. That’d be dope.
I like where your heads at.
I second that!!!
Every musician should be humble like you! You play what you are!
Great man!!
Just want to add that Joey's such a nice, humble guy you want him to do well. Generous with his info too.

This guy is one helluva slide guitar player. Just discovered him and looking forward to many years to come!
THIS is the phrasing I always wanted to play. Amazing timbre..
@27:33 dude adjust tuning mid-flight without missing a beat. That entire section starting at @27:04 is soooooo coooool.
Great player/singer/writer and a great fella too. I'm really happy to see Joey on the path towards towards the level of recognition he deserves.
Sound is a bit on the low side actually
What the heaven of guitar is that?!

That Sorokin Gold Top Though.... Damn fine guitar!
Refreshing approach to slide. Funny though, he thinks his hybrid finger/slide technique as a flaw. I think it's a brilliant innovation.

It’s not his room. Those all belong to the “That Pedal Show” guys, since it was filmed in their studio. But it was definitely a timely focus pull.
@@lightaces oh........ right.
I like how that off brand GoldTop has Gold on the back and neck. The very first GoldTops were like that.
Hell yeah for this and for CHAMPAGNE JAMES!

That's what has happened to me. I just recently decided I'm fully dedicated to open F and D5 and theres no going back lol.

I always teach amazing grace as a 1st guitar lesson.
I'm a dobro player though :-)

"Cop their feel"! Hahaha! I love this guy!
Chords open up so much more when you switch to open tuning
Great vibe and great playing. 👌
How do we transform regular guitar into dlide guitar, should we change the nuts?
I'm glad he cleared up the Sonny thing straight out of the gate. He definitely didn't sound like him. Very good though
That pedal show room!
Does anyone have a tab for this lesson? He tunes to Open C and is fretting behind the slide so I am totally lost trying to figure it out
Thanks man
Joey is so incredible. I want to hang out with him!
I'd love to have heard about his slide also. The flat spot on the slide and the thick wall brass.
It's a Rock Slide -Joey Landreth model.
Thanks!
Man, I suck at slide. It sounds so cool. I need to work more on it.

anyone knows the exact tunnig is using in this video and it if it can be done with regular guitar or if it has to be Baritone inevitably?
Amazing! Great song
Nice rack focus to the pedals as Landreth sez "...I am a pedal junkie".
That Pedal Shed!
@thatpedalshow
Not a slide comment but when John Prine was asked how he wrote so many songs and why, he said he couldn’t remember other people’s words.
Waltzing Matilda - love it
what is your tuning?
I wish he would a standard lesson..
This is fascinating as well as inspiring. I want to hear more of his music, because of this video, and will be going on the hunt for it today.
What tuning is he using ?
How high are the string set?
Crazy legend !!!!
Another great video! What camera are you using?
He used a Nikon D810 and 750 :)
Are there any tips for someone who just wants to pick a slide up and throw a few licks in or on one song in a set?? So no changing your setup?

try heavier strings for more tension- it should help with the bottoming out
