It's a pity some people don't see the future potential, they just want everything in the present, the amount of work that went into producing this beautiful piece of complexed art, people forget this is just the start, a platform to build something greater.
Great game, Great trailer. But the two are only slightly related. The game this trailer makes elite out to be is not the game Elite is. A little artistic licence is fine in a trailer, it doesn't have to be gameplay, but it feels like this trailer completely missed the point of what Elite : Dangerous is.
deathm00n2 Yeah, I'm finding the flight assist toggle to be a massive help in the combat demo (I couldn't afford test access T_T), but it still feels massively slower than the trailer shows. Maybe I just need to get moar practice in, though.
I haven't tried turning off the flight assist yet in the demo, but I've seen some videos of crazy maneuvers people do. Turning the ship backwards like in the trailer is one of them, it's a lot more slower though
So when is this game coming out? It looks similar to a game I'm playing called Horizons....but way more interesting and apparently we can walk into our ships. Can't wait to get it.
I despise the people saying none of this is possible or doesn't happen in-game. The number of ships is slightly exaggerated, but there are resource extraction sites where pirates constantly pray upon the local miners, like in the first shot, you can chase them back to stations in supercruise with a wake scanner, engage them outside - but you might catch the imperial fighters surrounding imperially-controlled stations, pictured in this trailer. I doubt you'll have the misfortune of 3 Anacondas siding with the station and gunning you down, but it is possible. The only thing this video lies about is the pace at which it all happens, which is fair, because it's a trailer and needs to condense the gameplay into a shorter, more consumable version to be played in short bursts. Because that's what trailers are.

This trailer looks exactly how it's supposed to look like. Eye-catching, dynamic and showing what the game is generally all about. Those who were following the ED scene already know what to expect.
Everybody is saying these maneuvers are not possible, but I feel like if you turned off flight assist, you could pull some of them off. Now obviously you wouldn't be able to choreograph anything this well unless you practiced a routine with some friends, but I don't see any reason why a move like 1:05 would be impossible. I mean with flight assist off, you could turn around and shoot the guy behind you.
I only came back to this to remind me of how this made me feel. I never want to feel like I just did again, watching the (Arrival) trailer for the biggest event ever in E:D history.
Think I watched this trailer like 500 times already during the last 2 years or so. Every time before next time I'm diving deeply into the huuuge and mysterious sandbox of distant stars out there. Billions of stars our home is made of, the Milky Way galaxy..., to be discovered and watched closely only from my Gutamaya's finest cockpit' seat experience. I'm so freaking loving it!!!

The game is nothing like that, those manouvers, supercruise speed, dont be fooled, there r no combat like that, and no reason to battle at all, the game lacks content and basic grouping functions.

I think it's more a case of expressing an ideal of elite, this is probably how some people see their game play out in their imaginations much like those back in the day with wireframe graphics. Plus a video with a ship docking at lots of stations buying and selling goods would probably put people off ;)

1:09 I like that (if the trailer is accurate) that the old StarFury Reverse is back as a maneuver. Used to be a mainstay tactic of mine back when I played Wing Commander 3, 4, and Prophecy.
Not sure why you guys would waste money on a CG trailer when actual gameplay looks so good, but at least it was a neat trailer. Decently representative of how the game actually plays too, so kudos for that. Hope you have a proper gameplay launch trailer though.
Bcus its very hard to capture in game live footage and co-ordinate external cameras at the same time. I've tried to do it on trailers before. Its a lot easier to just animate it by hand and set up the cameras that way.
Neo Racer He was talking about using the game engine, not filming live action. You could script AI to do what they did in this and render that as the trailer.
Great trailer and great game. I know some people are struggling to find action, but that's how a sandbox works - content is not constantly shoveled into your mouth, you have to get out there and create it for yourself/others. Regarding the trailer, I'd like to give two examples. The first one is Warlords of Draenor, a trailer from Blizzard. Like every other Blizzard trailer, it looks amazing and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual gameplay. To my knowledge, Blizzard never even bothered to put a "NOT ACTUAL GAME FOOTAGE" notification there, yet nobody seems to be upset. Why? Because cinematic trailers aren't supposed to show gameplay footage. This one is probably as close as you would get, since it features shooting spaceships. On the other hand, we have the latest Eve Online trailer. That one has actual teamspeak recordings from real players; every event that is shown in the trailer actually took place, and though the video is "reconstructed" it is still a valid representation made using the game engine. That trailer is also rather great. And you know what? You can spend ~years~ playing Eve Online and never encounter anything even remotely similar to those events. Surely, at that point you would also think "the trailer is a lie!"... except it's a documented reality. And what I'm saying is, just because your Zorgon Peterson Hauler never gets to be the hero of a fun shootout doesn't mean they don't exist - it just means you have to undock a combat ship and shoot others. Get good.
Dreez76 Don't think so. You probably have to go for mid settings and maybe have only 30 fps. But i think it would be possible. I get almost everywhere stable 60 FPS on a R9 280. PS4 should be like under an R9 270 i guess. Also FD seems to hold this option in the back hand. They developed a lot with XBox controlers, and the Engine is working on Consoles as well, as they already had games with it for the xBox 360.

So many inaccuracies in this video according to actual game play. Way to Hollywood this up. Elite Dangerous is amazing and has huge potential, but this is not in game footage or actual ship physics. Those 180 degree turns in a Mark III are impossible. That ship is like a brick on ice, its not even possible in an Eagle. You cant jump next to ships within 3km of you because of the mass locking mechanic. Those four ships that jump away at the end, like bosses, would have sat there and overheated while their frame shift drive tried to charge before any of them jumped out. Please, please, please do not lead people into thinking this is some super fast paced arcade shooter. Also, please don't get me wrong, Elite Dangerous is a great game and well worth the $150 I spent getting into the beta, not for any of the fallacies you see here though. This marketing department is aiming for the wrong demographic and overselling a game that doesn't need to be oversold.
The demographic they are aiming for is whatever brings in the MONEY. They cant do this for free. Blizzard does exactly the same thing and its the most succesful MMO ever. #PWND
Thumbs up for all you wrote. This trailer is misleading and will wake false expectations that the game can't compete with. It is a great game, even dogfighting is fun, but if someone is expecting it like this he ends up frustrated and most likely call it a bad game and spread his verdict. This will not help the game. So i wonder why Frontier had done this trailer.
You missed the fact where the trailer is totally badass, though. You think the average punter cares about how in the average game the distance should be 3km? I really do not understand the criticisms to be honest. Would you prefer they had 2 mins of supercruise with relaxing music? Everything that is in the trailer is in the game.
Ox King To show all the aspects of the game in less than 2 minutes is a very hard thing to do. But they did show a lot, plus showed off a promised featue that has yet to make it ingame, slaving frame shift drives together. Yes, you can't yank your cobra around like it does in the video, even if you turn flight assist off and take full advantage of Newtonian physics. Let's call it an artistic compromise.
I don't like this, because it makes the game look as if it's a wargame or some kind, where the main point is to fly around shooting at stuff, even though that's only about 1/5th (?) of the game, so to say. The older videos were better, where they showed pircary, exploring and so on. But sure, this *looks* good. And it'll probably sell the game to the shooter kiddies, but is this really what Frontier wants people to think this game is like? On a side-note, 0:48 I *wish* supercruise was that nice, but it's not. Definitely not. Not even nearly.
the game has to make money. If they sell it to the 'shooter kiddies' then great. Remember if this game doesn't make money there will be no planetary landing expansion, surface mining, big game hunting etc which would be a tragedy.

It's such a shame that every trailer has to be about the action and explosions. I feel like that's really not the soul of Elite. A trailer about space exploration could have made this more interesting. There is a 1:1 Milky Way galaxy. Market that more.

@@PowerofRock24 I literally have 500 hours in the game, the galaxy is empty, sure you can do piracy but its glorified mining with some hatchbreaker limpets. FPS Missions, Engineering material frenzy. Thats all it is. Guardians, shoot some towers to get a module, cool, Thargoids have been stagnant for years and are pretty much the only intersting things to find.

Synthmilk The first few seconds of the trailer display a message stating "not actual game footage", if people ignore that it isn't the trailer's fault. A commercial is a piece of advertising designed to inform the consumer of the existence of a product and encourage them to purchase it. I fail to see how a trailer is any different.
-Is there/will there be any incentive for large scale fleet battles? -Is there any resource gathering? If so, do resources deplete giving incentive to fight over them? -Are there any player owned corporations, guilds, groups (whatever you want to call them) that take on new members? -Are there any player owned docking structures where your ships and items can be stored? -Is there any sort of P2P contract system? Is the market player driven or automated? -When your ship is destroyed, do have to buy a new one? If so, are there any that are going to be insanely expensive? Keep in mind that I'm referring to the way things currently are AS WELL as any planned additions. Even rumors. I've been surfing all over to find clear answers. Any and all answers are greatly appreciated.

What a great trailer, not too long, plenty of action, shows off the graphics nicely. I can't believe people are arguing about how realistically it portrays the spirit of Elite or that you can't do things in game that are shown in the trailer (they put not actual game footage at the start for a reason). Awesome trailer! It gives a good impression of the soul behind what Elite is about. The visuals, while not 'actual gameplay' arent that far off. ED looks amazing on my mid/high end PC. Silky smooth space adventuring at it's best.

Hellyos90 I dont see any hate in Victor Gott comments, he is just pointing out an obvious flaws with ED. And shoud we really settles for the way the games are release these days, I don't think so. I think they should at least fix the core systems, like social tools before releasing. This is an MMO that feels like a single player.
LOL. Sorry but that was cheesy as hell. And nowhere near what the real game is like. The simple fact that you can't meet more than 31 other players at a time because instances are limited to 32 players is just one of the things that render this trailer bs. There's no walking on the stations in game either. Frontier has made loads of terrible choices and not only recently. I was one of the first to back this game on kickstarter but I regret doing so now. Devs even admitted that the game won't have all needed features at launch and that the rest of the features in game are "bare bones" of what they intended to have. Basically people were tricked into paying full priced product money for what is in fact an Early Access game. Game with terrible design choices like Solo mode (always online!) that transfers to Open mode, no basic anticheat protections, full of exploits, etc. You know that can close the game if you're loosing a fight with someone to save your ship as it will instantly disappear once you close the game. Cool ha? Did I mention that there is Gamma version now and that there won't be a wipe before the launch on the 16th? Yea. Every player who earned millions through exploits will keep everything when you join the game when its released. Enjoy.
- 32 players per instance = *GAMMA* - Walking in station = Future expansion - Missings features for the launch = That's better than leave him in development stage - Online only = I can understand you but the game lose all him fun without any other people and with the solo you can easily cheat and give you credit and all that stuff... - No hacks protections = They are some and more where added in Gamma - Instant depop when disconnect = Now in combat you need to wait *15 sec without receive any damage* to disconnect! And force to quit leave you inside the game! - *No wipe for launch* = I see that you had never feel the sentiment when you have buy a -fucking- **Lakyon Type 9 Heavy** and really a lot of credits in *LEGGIT* means and when you come back after work, you launch your game and you see you in a Sidewinder with 1000 credits :'(
You do realize Frontier said they weren't wiping because they could handle exploiters on an individual basis? And I find peoples definitions of early access strange. Suddenly any game that wants to do any post release content is actually just early access. You are deriding a practice that is actually a massive benefit to players. If we went with older style development, that would just be cut features. The difference here is that the kickstarter backers were the funding here, so they were the ones told all the design plans, and more or less treated like Frontier would have treated a publisher. As in, made a pitch of what they wanted to do, with some reach goals of stuff they wanted to accomplish, and it was assumed both parties understood some of these features would be cut from release because of time constraints. The second difference is that digital sales are a thing now, and release doesn't have to be the end of development, meaning they have a chance to make it the game they actually wanted, rather than the game they were able to get by release. Out of curiosity, would you prefer the devs kept this game in eternal beta for the five to ten years they plan to support it with content, only releasing the game when they can't support it anymore and have to cease content development and server hosting? Thus meaning anyone who preordered gets nothing? Now, what I may have described may sound similar to early access under a different name, but early access isn't about features. It is about stability and a minimum level of quality. The early stages were all about developing content, sure, but the actual gearing up for a game they could release wasn't about getting all the features in, it was about fixing the bugs that sat in the game for months, optimizing the code they had, adding in anti-cheat measures, and all the other stability features you need for a game released to the public. That is what separates released and early access games. Not whether they have further features planned, but whether the stability has reached a minimum level of quality. In this regard, calling Elite release an early access scam, or whatnot, is utter bullshit and hearsay from those who don't understand game development. Don't get me wrong, its not like I don't have my own qualms about their development choices, but I am sick of people railing on it with baseless claims like this. I mean, if anything, their communication systems are a much more pressing issue than this, and I would the wings system should have been high enough priority to make it in for release, as I saw that as integral to the vision they showed us for the game. Their vision for the game always seemed to be a strongly cooperative focused one, and while it certainly is multiplayer, it is lacking any sort of cooperative experience, and that is a shame. But, complaining about a cinematic trailer not being representative of actual gameplay, when it clearly says that, and every other cinematic trailer is no more accurate than this, isn't helping anything. At best, it simply draws conversation away from more important issues.

actually the combat is just as fun as in the trailer, just that the CGI trailer, as every CGI trailer ever, is flashier than the game. keep complaining people while i enjoy this fantastic game >.>

The SLFs were always in the game afaik. They didn't launch from ships but from the capital ships and stations.
Monody they only launched from capital ships and space stations in the earlier versions, so it’s not entirely inaccurate.

A game that is the size of an ocean, but you only get water to your ankles. A real definition of wasted potential. And I fint it very sad...

Think I watched this trailer like 500 times already during the last 2 years or so. Every time before next time I'm diving deeply into the huuuge and mysterious sandbox of distant stars out there. Billions of stars our home is made of, the Milky Way galaxy..., to be discovered and watched closely only from my Gutamaya's finest cockpit' seat experience. I'm so freaking loving it!!!

The game is nothing like that, those manouvers, supercruise speed, dont be fooled, there r no combat like that, and no reason to battle at all, the game lacks content and basic grouping functions.

У этого ролика проблема не в том что в нем показано то чего нет в игре. У него проблема противоположная - тут по сути показана только драка, хотя в игре хватает занятий и без драк. И они не отражены в ролике. Тут же игра богаче чем ролик

I think it's more a case of expressing an ideal of elite, this is probably how some people see their game play out in their imaginations much like those back in the day with wireframe graphics.
Plus a video with a ship docking at lots of stations buying and selling goods would probably put people off ;)

1:09 I like that (if the trailer is accurate) that the old StarFury Reverse is back as a maneuver. Used to be a mainstay tactic of mine back when I played Wing Commander 3, 4, and Prophecy.
Not sure why you guys would waste money on a CG trailer when actual gameplay looks so good, but at least it was a neat trailer. Decently representative of how the game actually plays too, so kudos for that. Hope you have a proper gameplay launch trailer though.
Bcus its very hard to capture in game live footage and co-ordinate external cameras at the same time. I've tried to do it on trailers before. Its a lot easier to just animate it by hand and set up the cameras that way.
Neo Racer He was talking about using the game engine, not filming live action. You could script AI to do what they did in this and render that as the trailer.

Great trailer and great game. I know some people are struggling to find action, but that's how a sandbox works - content is not constantly shoveled into your mouth, you have to get out there and create it for yourself/others. Regarding the trailer, I'd like to give two examples. The first one is Warlords of Draenor, a trailer from Blizzard. Like every other Blizzard trailer, it looks amazing and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual gameplay. To my knowledge, Blizzard never even bothered to put a "NOT ACTUAL GAME FOOTAGE" notification there, yet nobody seems to be upset. Why? Because cinematic trailers aren't supposed to show gameplay footage. This one is probably as close as you would get, since it features shooting spaceships. On the other hand, we have the latest Eve Online trailer. That one has actual teamspeak recordings from real players; every event that is shown in the trailer actually took place, and though the video is "reconstructed" it is still a valid representation made using the game engine. That trailer is also rather great. And you know what? You can spend ~years~ playing Eve Online and never encounter anything even remotely similar to those events. Surely, at that point you would also think "the trailer is a lie!"... except it's a documented reality. And what I'm saying is, just because your Zorgon Peterson Hauler never gets to be the hero of a fun shootout doesn't mean they don't exist - it just means you have to undock a combat ship and shoot others. Get good.

Dreez76 Don't think so. You probably have to go for mid settings and maybe have only 30 fps. But i think it would be possible. I get almost everywhere stable 60 FPS on a R9 280. PS4 should be like under an R9 270 i guess.
Also FD seems to hold this option in the back hand. They developed a lot with XBox controlers, and the Engine is working on Consoles as well, as they already had games with it for the xBox 360.

So many inaccuracies in this video according to actual game play. Way to Hollywood this up. Elite Dangerous is amazing and has huge potential, but this is not in game footage or actual ship physics. Those 180 degree turns in a Mark III are impossible. That ship is like a brick on ice, its not even possible in an Eagle. You cant jump next to ships within 3km of you because of the mass locking mechanic. Those four ships that jump away at the end, like bosses, would have sat there and overheated while their frame shift drive tried to charge before any of them jumped out. Please, please, please do not lead people into thinking this is some super fast paced arcade shooter. Also, please don't get me wrong, Elite Dangerous is a great game and well worth the $150 I spent getting into the beta, not for any of the fallacies you see here though. This marketing department is aiming for the wrong demographic and overselling a game that doesn't need to be oversold.
The demographic they are aiming for is whatever brings in the MONEY. They cant do this for free. Blizzard does exactly the same thing and its the most succesful MMO ever.

It is a great game, even dogfighting is fun, but if someone is expecting it like this he ends up frustrated and most likely call it a bad game and spread his verdict. This will not help the game. So i wonder why Frontier had done this trailer.

To show all the aspects of the game in less than 2 minutes is a very hard thing to do. But they did show a lot, plus showed off a promised featue that has yet to make it ingame, slaving frame shift drives together. Yes, you can't yank your cobra around like it does in the video, even if you turn flight assist off and take full advantage of Newtonian physics. Let's call it an artistic compromise.
How they do the sound thing when they're in the space place?
I don't like this, because it makes the game look as if it's a wargame or some kind, where the main point is to fly around shooting at stuff, even though that's only about 1/5th (?) of the game, so to say.
The older videos were better, where they showed pircary, exploring and so on.
But sure, this *looks* good. And it'll probably sell the game to the shooter kiddies, but is this really what Frontier wants people to think this game is like?
On a side-note, 0:48 I *wish* supercruise was that nice, but it's not. Definitely not. Not even nearly.

I see elite as a game where you need to be jack of all trades. Would get boring to just focus on one aspect.

@@PowerofRock24 I literally have 500 hours in the game, the galaxy is empty, sure you can do piracy but its glorified mining with some hatchbreaker limpets. FPS Missions, Engineering material frenzy. Thats all it is. Guardians, shoot some towers to get a module, cool, Thargoids have been stagnant for years and are pretty much the only intersting things to find.
I hope to see more of these every time they release an expansion.

The major issue regardless is it shows non-gameplay footage that entirely misrepresents combat in the game.

A commercial is a piece of advertising designed to inform the consumer of the existence of a product and encourage them to purchase it. I fail to see how a trailer is any different.
-Is there/will there be any incentive for large scale fleet battles?
-Is there any resource gathering? If so, do resources deplete giving incentive to fight over them?
-Are there any player owned corporations, guilds, groups (whatever you want to call them) that take on new members?
-Are there any player owned docking structures where your ships and items can be stored?
-Is there any sort of P2P contract system? Is the market player driven or automated?
-When your ship is destroyed, do have to buy a new one? If so, are there any that are going to be insanely expensive?
Keep in mind that I'm referring to the way things currently are AS WELL as any planned additions. Even rumors. I've been surfing all over to find clear answers. Any and all answers are greatly appreciated.

What a great trailer, not too long, plenty of action, shows off the graphics nicely. I can't believe people are arguing about how realistically it portrays the spirit of Elite or that you can't do things in game that are shown in the trailer (they put not actual game footage at the start for a reason). Awesome trailer! It gives a good impression of the soul behind what Elite is about. The visuals, while not 'actual gameplay' arent that far off. ED looks amazing on my mid/high end PC. Silky smooth space adventuring at it's best.

Hellyos90 I dont see any hate in Victor Gott comments, he is just pointing out an obvious flaws with ED. And shoud we really settles for the way the games are release these days, I don't think so. I think they should at least fix the core systems, like social tools before releasing. This is an MMO that feels like a single player.
LOL. Sorry but that was cheesy as hell. And nowhere near what the real game is like. The simple fact that you can't meet more than 31 other players at a time because instances are limited to 32 players is just one of the things that render this trailer bs. There's no walking on the stations in game either.
Frontier has made loads of terrible choices and not only recently. I was one of the first to back this game on kickstarter but I regret doing so now.
Devs even admitted that the game won't have all needed features at launch and that the rest of the features in game are "bare bones" of what they intended to have.
Basically people were tricked into paying full priced product money for what is in fact an Early Access game.
Game with terrible design choices like Solo mode (always online!) that transfers to Open mode, no basic anticheat protections, full of exploits, etc.
You know that can close the game if you're loosing a fight with someone to save your ship as it will instantly disappear once you close the game. Cool ha?
Did I mention that there is Gamma version now and that there won't be a wipe before the launch on the 16th? Yea. Every player who earned millions through exploits will keep everything when you join the game when its released.

- Missings features for the launch = That's better than leave him in development stage
- Online only = I can understand you but the game lose all him fun without any other people and with the solo you can easily cheat and give you credit and all that stuff...
- No hacks protections = They are some and more where added in Gamma
- Instant depop when disconnect = Now in combat you need to wait *15 sec without receive any damage* to disconnect! And force to quit leave you inside the game!
- *No wipe for launch* = I see that you had never feel the sentiment when you have buy a -fucking- **Lakyon Type 9 Heavy** and really a lot of credits in *LEGGIT* means and when you come back after work, you launch your game and you see you in a Sidewinder with 1000 credits :'(
You do realize Frontier said they weren't wiping because they could handle exploiters on an individual basis?
And I find peoples definitions of early access strange. Suddenly any game that wants to do any post release content is actually just early access. You are deriding a practice that is actually a massive benefit to players. If we went with older style development, that would just be cut features. The difference here is that the kickstarter backers were the funding here, so they were the ones told all the design plans, and more or less treated like Frontier would have treated a publisher. As in, made a pitch of what they wanted to do, with some reach goals of stuff they wanted to accomplish, and it was assumed both parties understood some of these features would be cut from release because of time constraints. The second difference is that digital sales are a thing now, and release doesn't have to be the end of development, meaning they have a chance to make it the game they actually wanted, rather than the game they were able to get by release. Out of curiosity, would you prefer the devs kept this game in eternal beta for the five to ten years they plan to support it with content, only releasing the game when they can't support it anymore and have to cease content development and server hosting? Thus meaning anyone who preordered gets nothing?
Now, what I may have described may sound similar to early access under a different name, but early access isn't about features. It is about stability and a minimum level of quality. The early stages were all about developing content, sure, but the actual gearing up for a game they could release wasn't about getting all the features in, it was about fixing the bugs that sat in the game for months, optimizing the code they had, adding in anti-cheat measures, and all the other stability features you need for a game released to the public. That is what separates released and early access games. Not whether they have further features planned, but whether the stability has reached a minimum level of quality. In this regard, calling Elite release an early access scam, or whatnot, is utter bullshit and hearsay from those who don't understand game development.
Don't get me wrong, its not like I don't have my own qualms about their development choices, but I am sick of people railing on it with baseless claims like this. I mean, if anything, their communication systems are a much more pressing issue than this, and I would the wings system should have been high enough priority to make it in for release, as I saw that as integral to the vision they showed us for the game. Their vision for the game always seemed to be a strongly cooperative focused one, and while it certainly is multiplayer, it is lacking any sort of cooperative experience, and that is a shame. But, complaining about a cinematic trailer not being representative of actual gameplay, when it clearly says that, and every other cinematic trailer is no more accurate than this, isn't helping anything. At best, it simply draws conversation away from more important issues.
