I got saved by the people of Vietnam! 🇻🇳

  • 🇻🇳 After finishing a delicious vermicelli beef noodle breakfast, my tire was flat, yet again, so I headed back on over to the place I pumped it in the morning to get it plugged so I could make the 100km ride back to Hanoi. When I arrived, however, they were closed for lunch! I continued onto the road that the old man from a few videos back helped pump the tire for me, but he was also off for the day. Things weren't looking good and I thought I may be stuck in Hai Phong for the day! Luckily, the locals stepped in to help me out. This is why it's so easy to live in and love Vietnam. No matter what happens, you can always count on the people around you to help you out.
If you're ever in need of someone to fix your bike, the man Hau was really nice. You can find his bike-repair station just across the street from the Mixue Ice Cream shop at 101 Hai Ba Trung. The ladies selling juice are also right there. Here's the approximate Google Map location:
    goo.gl/maps/3jwCUaLYjaanS4eN8
    Video Chapters:
    0:00 Checking out of hotel
2:10 Arriving at bike shop to fix tire
3:45 Going to by a Hai Phong specialty
8:30 Looking for a repair shop
9:30 Hai Phong uncle gives me directions
    11:43 Looking for Mr. Hau
13:20 Mr. Hau comes to fix my bike
    14:10 Drinking juice while waiting
23:10 Hai Phong uncle gives me snacks for the ride home

Chris, I notice that you speak the North Vietnamese dialect, I spent 6 1/2 years in South Viet Nam, 1 1/2 years in the Army and 5 years as a civilian; I married a Vietnamese woman and we were married for 43 years until she died of a stroke 10 years ago; My wife was born near Haiphong, Our children were born in Vietnam, She taught them to speak Vietnamese. Thank you, I'm a new subscriber, I enjoy your videos.

Pulling up to a stranger on the road and asking for tire help, driving down narrow alleys and asking the first person you see for directions, following strangers from their house and handing your bike over to them.
In America, doing any one of these can likely get you killed.

I've seen some people mistaken Vietnamese speaking loudly as a sign of aggression or unfriendliness but that's an unfair representation of the Vietnamese's enthusiasm to help and curiosity. I visited Hai Phong 3 times, albeit for very short stay, when I was living and working in VN 10 years ago and have always loved Hai Phong. A very under rated city in terms of food, city's architectural style and people's enthusiasm.

Life is a bit sterile in the West. We in the West lose or miss a bit of something in life. That is the random relationship with others around us.

FYI about the bikes - if you're buying - you don't need a bigger bike, you probably just need a higher seat. You can get one custom made for pretty cheap. (less than 500k, sometimes only 200k)

Always wanted to be fluent in another language, and then surprise people with it. The good people of Vietnam really seem to appreciate it. I've no talent for languages, though.
