As an Irish-American who has lived most of his life in places where Irish-Americans are no more than a quiet echo on Main Street, I've actually met people who, while knowledgeable in other areas, didn't even know there _were_ two Irelands, much less that one was independent. And then there are those in my own community who, back during the Troubles, thought they were an ordinary conflict between standing armies.

Sure a high percentage of folk in Ireland call it soccer too. I call it soccer. For me and a high percentage of the country football is Gaelic football. Then there are plenty of folk who call both football and use the terms Gaelic or GAA and soccer to make it clear which one they are talking about if it is unclear which one they might be talking about.

Your flag is not so familiar to lots of people. It's not one of those with a pattern or image that sticks in the mind unless you need to know. Something like the Union Flag/Jack, the Stars and Stripes, the Maple Leaf, Japan's Rising Sun, Brazil's flag, Israeli flag, South Africa, Argentina, etc., are more easily memorable than the many combinations of tricolour flags, both horizontal and vertical.

@@chrisjmirvine4980 no if we're getting factually correct now your wrong. Ireland is currently two countries on 1 island Éire and Northern Ireland. N.I. is its own country but under Tan rule. But like Scotland and Wales they govern themselves. They actually aren't English as it was Scots brought over from the Highlands during the Plantations. There was many Wars of Independence. All failed but one. Which eventually led to a treaty being signed which left the North under the crown. But they are still every bit as Irish as we are.. Hard border went up in the mid 1900s and there was The Troubles. Fights between Catholics and Protestants and The IRA fighting the UK army took a few innocent lives who should still be alive today. We're over that now and we would love to see N.I break away from the UK.
