- What is it like commuting by bike to work in Japan? I cycle to work every single day (200km a week) and today on the cycling Japan series, I'll be sharing my full bike commute home after work, which is a 20km route.
I tried to film this video last week, but ended up getting 2 flat tires and experienced one of the negative points of commuting by bike.. Since then I invested in a new patch kit and some handy accessories for commuting. Thankfully, today's ride home went smoothly with some beautiful weather and a nice sunset :)

These long commuting videos relax me for some reason....its like going with the flow and enjoying whatever comes

Yes, me too. I can't believe I just watched for an hour. Its like strolling though the neighborhoods with someone else doing the pedaling. You don't need to have a topic to make these type of vids - just ride along and talk about whatever comes up on the route - watch Victor gimmeabreakman's walking laundry vids. You get a real feel for the city and the country when you go cruising past on the bike and see people acting naturally and doing their daily routines.
How sad am I? I've literally just got back from a 25 mile ride and I sit watching someone else ride a bike for an hour.
3 minutes in and we see the gorgeous back streets and old town.
That's it, I've seen enough. I'm moving to Japan!

@@TwoWheelCruise Are they really that bad? Do drivers go too fast and them being narrow, or is it just a matter of your perspective, with you being American and being used to wide roads?
I ask because action cameras as good as they are can really distort the perspective.
There are too many interactions, the roads are super narrow and walkers/bikes/cars pop out of nowhere
@@TwoWheelCruise I thought this would be the case, there's a LOT of junctions, and cars parked in garages that could just roll forward and block the road before they see you.

I am from Hong Kong. As we are at the Southern Hemisphere. We have short days at winter and long days at Summer. People actually love nighttime more than daytime as it's cooler for running, commuting... whatever outdoor activities. It's actually more comfortable, and that people can be free from being black after exposing under the sun
Seems to be a big cultural difference.. western people prefer to be tan. Agreed it's nice to exercise in cooler weather, but it's much more humid in Asia
It's really nice commuting to/from work only if the scenery is beautiful and there are no smokes coming from nearby cars, and also no traffic jam. I envy you, Cruise.
Half of the reason I chose my current job was for this commute ;)

I love cycling in Japan. It's super convenient! I got two flats while cycling too, but I was rescued by super nice Japanese cyclists.

Thanks for the video. I've been watching in instalments over several breakfasts and decided to finish this one before I go to bed.
I shared your thinking with the bell, but we have to have one here, and I realised that when I ring about 20- 50m away from pedestrians (and horses, we have those occasionally) they generally are happy enough. Some even thanked me specifically because it gave them time to get their kids/dog to safety before I passed.
It also means I can gauge their response and if they're obviously confused or stressed I can slow down and wait at a distance while they sort themselves out. I always slow down and thank them as well, and usually get a happy response.
You've got me all enthusiastic about videoing my own commute now. I just have to find someone ready to lend me an action camera...
I agree they are useful, but they are actually illegal to use to alert pedestrians in Japan..

Those are some really pleasant routes with nice views. I live in Germany and commute on my bike as well, but the scenery isn't as pleasant as yours (well, cuz of big city I guess). I want to go cycling in Japan someday so commuting videos like yours is really great to watch to get a feel of the atmosphere!

Love the different stuff you get to see on a simple ride back home. I've mentioned before how much I love Japan, yeah, the short daylight each day would not be a problem for me at least. Especially here I run from the sun, hitting 39° in couple days it sucks!! Lol Oh And the food/eating in your videos is always great to see! Wow I noticed that line of cars, traffic time, rush hour there too. Riding around Japan on my road bike and eating yep on my Bucket list! :-) :-)
Always something new each day 🙂 it's getting pretty hot here lately.. I guess it's nice for riding home for the sun to set early, but it can be demotivating for it to be dark when you get home

That's sad to hear you've got 2flat tires previously. I've Installed anti-punture tape in between tube and tire for all my wheels and haven't got any problems since, you might to try that out. Nice video.

A couple points of interest...
1- bathrooms are abundant along the river and bike trails, as well as with bicycle rest stops (I saw one that actually had nice showers and a small cafe, near Isesaki), however, public urination is also very common and it’s not unusual to see guys just going along the side of the road. I once saw a father and his young son, standing side-by-side, relieving themselves at the side of a parking lot. If those options don’t work for you, the conbinis have very nice restrooms with “washlets”.
2- As you mentioned the high school kids are probably the biggest danger to a cyclist. Most of them totally disregard the rules. Senior citizens on mamacharis are dangerous too, mostly because they love to ride down the wrong side of the road.
3- I love dogs and the people walking them usually do a good job keeping them close by, but I missed a KOM by 1 second, two weeks ago, because a man standing on one side of the trail allowed his leashed-dog to cross to the other side to do his business. The leash was blocking the entire width of the trail, only a couple meters before the endpoint. I shouted out “sumimasen” a number of times, but he was oblivious. That 10km KOM was 4 years old. I was not happy to have put in all that work, just to be thwarted by a man and his dog.
4-Do you ever encounter any animals on the trails? I regularly see foxes, martens, tanukis, lots of cats (wild and domesticated), and occasionally, wild boars! One ran across the trail two days ago and he was large and fast. I also see civets, snakes and lots of frogs. In the mountains, I’ve encountered large groups of monkeys, deer, a bear and some wild boars.
Wow, a shower??? And wild boars?? Sounds like you got more action going on at your river path.
I've had a couple koms interrupted by people walking in the center of the path / dogs as well.. well now you know you have the fitness to get it.. just need some luck now lol

I recently started off bike commuting, but always got a sweaty back for my backpack and it feels horrible!! Maybe introducing how you managed to carry your things and your outfits for bike commuting would be a nice topic and quite useful for those people like me.

I did watch the whole video!☺️ And I loved it. I'm a bike commuter myself. I do about 22 miles round trip in El Paso, TX. Before moving here 8 years ago, I commuted in Atlanta, GA from 1996 to 2011. It's funny to me what you said about buying more bikes because I own 15 bikes and they're all for me, no wife here😂

I commuted to work at 12 AM for around 10 years winter and summer. It was only just over 3 miles unfortunately, but the main thing was dealing with the drunks on the weekends(collage town). I used my cycling jacket, toe covers, gortex helmet cover, lobster gloves, Breath face cover(to help with breathing the below freezing air), and sometimes a pair of snowboarding pants that had zippers on the outside of the legs. I have a special mount(hand made) for a strong (over 900 lm) flash light that attached to the arrow bars, a set of rear brake light flashers, and a lot of 3M reflective tape for passive visibility. Riding at night is very exhilarating(feels like you are going twice as fast), and I always felt better going into work on the bike. People kept asking if I owned a car though...........
Yikes, that sounds really dangerous. Fortunately drunk driving is very rare in Japan..
Yea I witnessed a pick up tuck come around a corner and plow into 4 parked cars. This was while going into work. Instead of stopping the "guy" just floored it and kept ripping through the cars. It happened in front of another bar, I turned into a parking lot to put some cars between me and the truck. I called the police when I got to work but could not see the license plate number. Only 10% of people(U.S.) on the road will give you trouble in my experience. I don't know if adding more biking trails will make things better or worse. Most of my riding was on the road though.

I was just riding for fun the other day and saw a guy commuting on a drop bar Alfine bike so I asked him about it.
It wasn’t belt driven and it had a bar end shifter so that was different. Cool to see these different types of things. And being able to have nice conversations with random people when cycling. Never happens when driving :)
Weird, that defeats the whole purpose of it, but a drop version would be nice..
I think it works that way if you drive a tesla though 😅
Two Wheel Cruise Yeah I think a hub gear system with a chain is better but not better enough, unless you have a full chain case on an upright bike.
And it’s true that EV drivers tend to chat while charging. But never talked to the car next to me at a red light :) And when I had a petrol scooter, no one ever talked to me. Maybe that was because of the helmet though, or the noisy engine (and many people deliberately make them much noisier even).
I'd want the belt drive for no maintenance..

Singlespeed ftw for commuting less maintenance, you can use your track bike(or convert any bike to singlespeed) and wear fencing mask to fight against those flies. I watch the whole video XD
I sometimes use my single speed fixed gear to commute. The low maintenance is great 😁

Nice route you have, loved the country side and especially the river route, I have the same privilege here as well. I do commuting with bicycle normally although now been working remote due to the circumstances. That truck was scary as the driver probably can't see you if you appeared in his dead angle. I share similar experiences and opinions e.g. using the bell, I think a vocal information that you are passing behind from the left or right side etc is better and usually met by a reply "thank you" .
Having 266 likes and no dislike shows how well you integrated into the ultra-polite Japanese community.

I live on the coast near wetlands so my bike commute looks very similar. It's only 5.8 miles mostly trail and I only have to go on one main road that is very wide so I'm very fortunate!
Thanks for the fix, I am really missing my commute. It will be another six months before the road to work is not all torn up for construction.

Still envious of the lock situation in Japan. Considering i have to take a two relativily heavy locks everywhere here in Berlin, Germany. Actually the main reason i do not commuter every day with my cyclocrossbike. Japan is anyway kind of a reminder of my Childhood. No real crimerate, everythink works and people are polite and friendly.
Would definitely be a lot more work to have to bring big locks everyday.. Japan is slowly getting more dangerous.. curious to see how it will be in 10 years

It's all on strava.. usually about 25km/hr, faster if I go hard
Really enjoyed that and it's a way for me to get a little bit of second hand Japanese culture . I love the way that the Japanese respect nature and their environment; I did not see one bit of litter anywhere which is so different from where I live in Australia . Thanks again.

It’s good to have a back up bike so you can switch out. If the other is mess up. So you can fix it or do minor repairs.

At 6:59 you pointed out the flood barrier control embankment engineering, yes that is exactly what they are for. Fun fact: the Japanese have been using this form of flood control since the mid 1500’s, Takeda Shingen is said to have started these sorts of river control embankments in order to stabilize the Kai and Shinano provinces (especially around the Kawanakajima Plain) during the warring periods of the Sengoku Jidai.
I believe it, there's a ton of rivers all over Japan. I'm sure they've learned a bunch of lessons over their long history
Very nice video. :) I was very "anti-sport man" but I started to commute to work and I enjoy that very much. My goal is to commute every single day in the week and videos like this motivates me even more to reach my goal. It's weird. I'm 25yo, over 100 kgs guy and I was my whole life against any sport (because I am an IT nerd man) and now i don't even want to sit in front of my computer and I want to make a ride outside. :D But I'm in central europe, so I have to prepare on winter. :D Thanks for videos like this, I started to love the nice views and exploring my city. :) But I think that the most people have problem with choice of clothing to varios of environments. I think that this can help to others. Because a lot of people is complaining about weather and not about their clothing. :D

Just go ahead and get a bell. I moved to northern Germany from the US and felt like ringing a bell was pretty rude...especially with a grandma or grandpa in front of me. But I found out first hand that they'll give you an ear full if you try to pass with just saying "Entschuldigung." You'll get "Fährst du ohne Klingel oder was?! MAN!". Since then, I ring the bell and they will automatically move to the right.
I'll probably cave and get one eventually..

Fyi, you are not allowed to use a bell on pedestrians. You can even get fined for that, but you could use a bear bell, which always rings as that one is actually somewhat legal. Slowing down and shouting excuse me at them actually works better and is more polite...
