I did a long bike commute, 24 miles for 5 years before I lost my job at the Airport one way. It was overnight when the buses weren't running. Did it in all sorts of weather. The total commute was one way was 2:35hr.
Make sure that you have your Gatorade bottles full, spare lights, and go up and down multiple ways to find the rights routes and alternatives when you're preferred route is blocks, or in my chase, flooded for it was a bike path built in the flood zone.

When I changed jobs last year, my commute to work became a lot longer. I managed to lessen the distance by changing my route slightly, but I was still faced with a bicycle commute of over an hour. I was also climbing steeper grades of hills. So, I bought a new Trek e-bike to commute back and forth to work with - my problem was solved. Then the pandemic struck, and suddenly all those foul smelling internal combustion machines vanished from the roadways. I was cycling in paradise, but good things never last forever. Those cancer causing jalopies are increasing in numbers now as more people venture out onto public fareways.

54 mile round trip commute. I either use an e-bike or I take the bus part-way. It's long but the plus side is that it is a total dream commute, like 50 of those miles are on rail-trails. That's the one nice thing about Minneapolis metro.

Central Park NYC- (for those interested)
Traffic flows both East and west through the park. The west side of the park (Central Park West) traffic flows both North and South on the outer edge. The East side of the park (5th Ave) runs south only.

I have a long commute. It is twenty miles for the round trip and takes about an hour each way. The goal is to commute by bike two days each week. I watch your videos for tips and inspiration. Ride on BB.

    • @derekpoosbug

10 miles is about 17km. You could get that down to about 35-45 minutes with proper training.
A hour would be my upper limit one way, which would be about 24-28km distance one way 5x a week would be doable and fairly easy enough once you adapt to it.
Sounds dumb but ride your bike more and it'll get easier. I live in a fairly busy area with traffic and not that friendly of roads with about 100m elevation per 10km.
Much like BB said if you can leave your stuff at work it'll save you SO MUCH effort and time. The difference between my roadie and my touring bike is about 8km/hour and about 25% effort difference.

My bike commute is 26km one way and takes me about 1hr10mins. Decent amount of climbing so its a pretty intense exercise first thing in the morning. I still can't commit to riding in the rain though haha.

Mine is 62 miles round trip so I only will do it 2-3 times a week, and only during the summer months. Back roads before the sun comes up can be pretty nerve-wracking. The ride home on the other hand is so great for unwinding.

Seems like a lot of fun. Must be young and strong, though, to ride like that five days a week or so. Great exercise. Some nice looking bike lanes here-and there. Seems like you'd be expending a lot of energy before getting to work, maybe too much, depending on the kind of work you do. Thirty minutes each way would work for me.

BB Greatest hits "On our way to work today" and "Bumpy the bumpy"👍😂 Used to commute, back when we went to work rather than worked from home, and ended up using a backpack, not ideal! Thought about it but glad I didn't buy a specific setup in the end. Would definitely consider a commuting setup if needed in the future though👍 Haha! When in the US people have said to us "You're not from around here are you?" Just because we're walking on the sidewalk 😂 The weirdest one was in Albuquerque when a teacher at a school gate stopped us for a chat, turned out he new the area we live in as he'd been in the UK for university. Spooky!

I'm only going in to the office once a week, so as long as the weather is not colder than 30 deg F or too windy, I bike 20 miles round trip. About 50 minutes to an hour 1 way.

Man, your streets are hella nice! Here in Manila, most streets are narrow and cars don't give you much space which sucks. New subscriber btw! Love your vids! One question though. I use cleat pedals while riding my bike but I'm thinking of using flat pedals to make it easier to commute. I'm torn on what to do at the moment. Badly need your input! Thanks!!

1 hour definitely is long imo. I've never had a commute that took longer than 15 minutes by car, under 10 has been most common. 20 minutes by bike at a not-sweaty pace is pretty comfy.

    • @bphillips7345

@@austinzigzagtati I use a gravel bike (hybrid) for my commutes. It is one of those hybrid road bike/ mtn bike mixes. Road bars, gears and mtn bike geometry. I find it more comfortable for me. Choose what is most comfortable and efficient for you. I can reach my destination in less than an hour, sometimes 45 min. if I push it.

I have two questions. One how do you deal with flat tires? And second how do you deal with riding on higher speed roads where there is no bike lane and sharing thr road with vehicles. That makes me really nervous, especially where I live. Drivers are often hostal towards bikers.

A note for people who might keep their car overnight at their work:
Ask if it's okay with your work, some parking lots don't allow overnight parking. If they don't find your closet Walmart or similar places.

I don't know about that not-polluting thing. I had German Bean Soup for lunch, and I feel a bout emissions in my future...
For the mixed-mode commute, a folding bike like the classic Brompton, or one of the cheaper alternatives, would be convenient. Especially, the Brompton with one of those front storage bags, can fold up into a piece of ersatz rolling luggage.

  • @EsotericOccultist

I ride a bike instead of driving a car and women really respect it because I'm not polluting, I'm saving money and staying healthy... just kidding they hate it. They want me to have a car so I can drive them around and cater to their needs.

I live in the same city as bb and will tell you that no, it is not bike friendly as far as cars are concerned. It's a large, sprawled out city/metro area where people are mostly used to only seeing other cars. It does have a nice, growing number of bike lanes and bike paths.

that's a lot for a normal bike but a pedal assist bike or a throttle enabled ebike would handle it well if 35 kph ebikes are allowable where you are. . About a one hour and fifteen minute commute at that speed, so some time, but a lot less exertion than on a regular bike. Thats a commute where you might want to use the "bike one way drive the other way" technique too.

you could also use public transportation part way if your buses have bike racks up front.
