    I swear, cooking classes of this style should be mandatory in high school. It's such an important basic life skill, like math and reading.

      @Pitch Dark It's great that you learned from your mum, but not all parents know how to cook well or have a good knowledge of nutrition. I'm really grateful for the FT classes I had.

      Agree. Our cooking teacher was a professional chef so we learned the proper way for everything. A lot of cooking teachers are just cooks and don't know a lot about professional cookery

    I knew that Jamie is a great cook but now I see that he is probably even better teacher! I mean kids are just talking all the time and he has nothing but words of encouragement for them and how great they are. Really brilliant teacher who really really try to teach them.
    From what I understood in this video those are kids that went through many struggles in there lives where everyone gave up on them. I guess that might be the reason why he is so nice and encouraging. I think Jamie comes from the same background or was I wrong?
    Any way I salute this great man!

      J.O's parents had a pub when he was growing, thats where he got his enthusiasm to learn to cook plus i think i saw him on a programme and he said he had to help in the kitchen on Saturdays . Although he didn't have a disadvantaged childhood he wants to help disadvantaged kids and tries to give them an interest and hopefully a step up on the ladder of life , i wish someone would have done that for me when i was growing up , i would have grabbed on with both hands and worked like hell. Big Respect to Jamie Oliver for all of his hard work in schools trying to change things for the better and all the other things he does too 👍👍

      800lb Gorilla this is how school should work for any kid. It is alot more important to use positive motivation than negative motivation and the worst is indiference/indiferent motivation. Psychology says that the best way to motivate and boost someones performance is by positive attitude, the second is negative attitude and the third and the worst is indiference.

    I can't stop watching these. I've known who Jamie was for quite a while and just assumed he was some young celebrity chef but he is genuinely a very good teacher. Not just his cooking knowledge (which any professional chef has) but more importantly, his ability to instruct and communicate to his students.

    I WISH I'd had a proper cookery teacher like this at school. Instead we had 'food technology', learning about what temperature a fridge is supposed to be at and how to market processed ready meals. Corporate bullshit, not cooking.

      I did professional cookery at college, there is a LOT of theory behind it. But thats because its the qualification requirement. Its great stuff to know and learn, and helps understand why fresh food is better.

    I noticed in a lot of comments, people ragging on the rowdy behavior of the "kids". I felt the same, since they were annoying, but I'm now guessing that this is in some kind of reform school, and these kids have had messed-up lives. It looks like Jamie is one of the few people in their lives who actually gives a shit about them ---- enough so that it looks like his investment in them isn't wasted.

      They are all kids who have been excluded from normal schools for behavioural problems. They seem to be enjoying Jamie's Dream school (which is not a school but just an experiment with lessons from celebrities in various professions). However they have difficulty in listening quietly. With some of them, the second a thought comes into their heads it comes out of their mouths. The Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) session with actor Simon Callow is a revelation - the reading class - at the end they are all getting it and absorbed by it. (Apparently Callow said he had to have a lie down after one of his classes though)

  • @mouija1450
    @mouija1450 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jamie Oliver is like the best teacher any of us would ever have. World class skills, charisma and a creation of a mutually respectful and adventurous environment. He treats his students with respect, and when they go off the rails he brings them back with an idea of respect for him and the team. That means he's established himself as a healthy community leader that people want to be a part of, and are rewarded for community participation. At the end, win or lose, he gives them constructive criticism. No one learns much from success. Failure is the best teacher because it gives you a baseline point to work off from. All the kids seem to do well in this clip, but when they fail he tells them what went wrong and gives them a direction to work towards while using positive encouragement with the small bits they managed to get right. Some people thrive and rise up with negative reinforcement, but I'd say 90% of people like to be built up in small stages of mildly positive reinforcement. You can't just give them glowing reviews for mediocre work, or they're doomed to a life of mediocrity. That's why I don't like the modern practice of every child getting a participation trophy. There's no impetus to work harder when you're rewarded for simply showing up.
    I liked this guy well enough as a TV personality, but he has real integrity of character to put himself into a teaching role for underprivileged kids and go through the hassle of teaching them important life skills. He could easily post up in a luxury flat and enjoy his wealth, instead of plunging himself into a sea of ignorance with the lofty goal of changing lives. He was clearly frustrated at several times in this clip, but never once thought of letting these brats fend for themselves. He could simply go home to enjoy an afternoon with a cup of rare tea while lounging in a bespoke leather chair in a suit of silk pyjamas.

    the combination of teaching, showing, learning, doing, and assessing (with feedback) is brilliant. You can tell the kids are new to someone caring for them. Some of them want to shut down and go elsewhere (mentally), but the change of pace and constant scanning and interfacing is great. I love this. Teachers, see, learn, and reflect.

    As an American middle school FACS teacher, I know that at 15:03 Oliver is spent. The best part about great teachers is that they always come back and make the students understand that they are the most important outcome. This outcome has been especially pressing in the past couple of years during the pandemic. This dude knows what it is to teach, and to teach effectively. I use his videos in my classroom and know that he understands the struggle to engage and grow these young people. Great job man. You picked me up today.

    Jamie is a really great guy. He doesn't give a toss about making money (he couldn't help but earn a lot and is probably content with what he's got). He's truly concerned about the health of society and promotes healthy cooking for people who have no clue about cooking and succumb to eating McDonalds all the time, or at best those packet mix foods at home. As an almost beginner cook, I love his recipes cos they are simple yet nutritious and delicious.

    When people ask me what class I feel was most important in high school, I tell them my shop classes. Shop is useful outside of school for obvious reasons-- who wants to call a carpenter every time a door falls off the hinge? Who wants to get ripped off at the mechanics? Actually, my wood-shop class taught me math-- drafting plans for projects requires a good amount of geometry. But it was all applied math-- real world word problems that I would turn into a concrete object. It was something that made me interested in learning math on my own-- because if I could do the calculations I could come up with an awesome project. For example I made a perfectly symmetrical 8 sided box. I had to calculate angles, I had to calculate how large to make the lid, I had to learn to calculate in how much I was going to sand down when making measurements. This in addition to learning how to use the plainer, the router, the sander, the saw, the jointer ect ect. I guess what I'm getting at is that Life Skills classes-- home economics, auto/wood shop, cooking, personal finance, first aid, drivers ed ect ect-- they seem to be cut first along with Art an Music, but really those life skills classes, at least for me, were the glue that bound all the other classes together and made them seem, well, useful. Geometry class in and of itself was boring. It was drudgery we had to learn because it would be on the SAT and big state exam-- but bringing that math to life? Giving me a practical reason to know it in the here and now. A lot more interesting.

    What Jamie means is that Sea salt contains Other minerals becide Sodium Chloride (salt).
    The salt that you buy from the shelf is (generally) chemical Sodium Chloride, or even other types of Chloride... Fast Food salt packets are often Aluminium or Potassium Chloride.

    The only thing i am worried about is cross contamination between raw fish and the fresh salad. Keep up the encouragement at the end of the class. I was amazed of all the happy smiling faces. It should make them all proud to produce something so fantastic with something the have never used before or even done before this day. Good luck to all in the class and keep on cooking. Practice makes perfect and as Bob Ross would always say.. " We do not make mistakes yet happy accidents." These accidents can turn out to be your one masterpiece. He also says if you are every happy with your painting then would will never get better because the next one could be your masterpiece so never stop trying and practicing You can always improve and make things better.

    • @paulwilliams6351
      @paulwilliams6351 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few typos, ... You will never get better if you think that what you have is the very best that you can do... There is always room to make it better than before. I have painted the same painting over a dozen times and each time I am never satisfied, I keep on painting. Some one else might think that it is a masterpiece but I know deep down that I can always improve it and make it better. Same goes with food...

    • @matthewdavis2475
      @matthewdavis2475 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      that cross contamination is something to keep in mind. seeing that im a beginning cook, i hate to have so much hands on touching. they did cook the fish before they ever touched the salad it appears tho. if you mean when they flip the fish after chopping the salad, then cross contam could be possible

    • @martinbrownson834
      @martinbrownson834 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With good fresh fish it shouldn't be a problem - I mean what is Sushi and sashimi? He did give clear instructions on x-contamination when he was teaching them chicken.

    • @matthewdavis2475
      @matthewdavis2475 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, i just got confused on what contaminates what. it isn't like the salad can contaminate the fish so as long as you realize what you touched first and last, you should be good

    • @paulwilliams6351
      @paulwilliams6351 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthew Davis : At around 2:00 the raw meat was touched and at 5:41, he is touching what appears to be tomatoes even though they were cooked, it was cut on the same board as the fish and hands were not washed.
